In the next few weeks or so, the government will disburse payments to some of the landowners who have concluded negotiations for the construction of the much-talked-about International Airport.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made that announcement this week, saying the government is making progress on the airport which is expected to be constructed from Eden back to the Woodfordhill area.
“We have started negotiations for the lands, all of the lands were surveyed, all of the lands were checked. We have started negotiations with land owners, property owners, and in the next few weeks we will start payments to some of the land owners,” he said.
He said the land acquisition process could be completed in the next couple of months.
Additionally, the prime minister said the government was also able to finalize the revised feasibility study which is a prerequisite for accessing funding from the Government of China.
“The Chinese government has a team of people who ought to be arriving in Dominica in February 2020. Their mission will be here for a certain period of time to finalize technical requirements,” he added.
Meantime, Skerrit said another action that has to be taken is a more in-depth geotechnical survey.
“So the first area we will be acquiring would be an area where we would have to do the geotechnical studies because that will require drilling of some very large vaults, very large holes to allow for preposterous testing to understand the geotechnical nature of the lands in the airport sight,” he explained.
An International Airport Development Committee is expected to be put in place next week, according g to the prime minister,
Skerrit said the airport is a national priority for Dominica and believes that its presence will complement the country’s thrust in tourism and agriculture.

Technically we already have an international airport with so few passengers the airlines struggle to fill flights resulting in very high costs.
Does anybody actually think building a longer runway with pretty buildings will suddenly and magically make thousands upon thousands of people come to stay in a few nice hotels? Guadeloupe and Martinique have airports with direct flights from the US and Europe. Does the region need another one just a few miles away?
Another factor. The runway as planned will have crosswinds. As we all know they can be substantial on that side of the island. The Portsmouth layout would be better but it would displace a number of people.
Personally I think Skerrit is playing to many people that haven’t thought this through. All they see is the promise of an international airport and the floods of riches this will entail. I think this is rather unrealistic to say the least.

NY/Dca. People travel from UK to Dominica, Africa to Dominica, Australia to Dominica, from far away places to Dominica. They will not fly direct to Dominica, they will hub going through to the closest route and airport that passengers will be in Transit. This is the nature of the flight that I have experienced from the age of 18, heading to UWI in Jamaica, or off to Grenada, Miami or Brasil. This is traveling in 2020. To fly to other countries we have overnight many times in Antigua, Barbados and we end up arriving home safely. This is not a Domininca thing. While I agree on Skerrit playing games with the people, an international airport has many benefits to the country. It’s what you do with the infrastructure at the end of the day. We’re building all of these hotels that are empty because of low traffic into Dominica and cost advantages of going to competing islands. Going to other countries before hitting Dominica is a big obstacle for many stay over tourists – we can’t capture that demand right now. Mr RP while I condone your thoughts on this matter, it`s going 20yrs now this failed incompetent Skerrit is talking of airport. Lately, Skerrit and his government has ignored the people of Dominica and flies all over the world, as far as possible selling our passports to nefarious people we know not of. There is and has been lack of transparency and to date it`s pretty obvious that these people who bought our passports are travelling all over in peace away from their own states passport, are now glued to ours and we have seen no benefits from the sale of our passports except our pm, those agents from far away may have benefitted handsomely and it appears that the same maybe for Skerrit? Well thought off. We in government service understand the bigger picture and the process it takes to implement any project, be it airport, school or roads. The issue is we have this failed incompetent Skerrit. He appears spontaneous, lacks the level of socio-economic development and is this flamboyant child seeking fame and loyalty from we Dominicans. Many and I abandoned this man years now. I totally agree. I have always said that what Dominica needs is timely and reliable connections from the neighbouring islands. Not all communities in the developed countries have international airports. Some are served by regional airport, which means you have to fly to a larger airport depending on your destination. Some of those distances are much farther than those between Dominica and Guadeloupe, Martinique, or Antigua. It is not uncommon to see planes that look exactly like LIAT at Heathrow airport in London heading to smaller airports in England.
The PM should use our limited resources on social programs instead, such as health and education.

What is the country doing to recover money paid to land owners by government back in 98? What do we owe China and how do we plan on paying back. Here is where i am puzzled. If it is a national priority why in Gods name we are making same errors of past? Why is the source of funding and repayment terms not put before the parliament so the people of Dominica knows what national debt this will incur? Nothing is free in this world. How are we paying for operations and maintenance cost? Are we having Chinese take care of that alo g with the roads stadium hospital etc? A geotechnical survey is done to help determine what soil conditions exist eg compaction, faults and other geologic hazards soil plasticity etc. This is all important for building large structures and putting needed engineering controls which are used to determine overall cost. The sale acquisition of land is also cost to build. How are you already spending money and don’t have all info yet you ready to ask for funding. Dominica is really a place where fools seems to have originated. This is the same reason why geothermal in limbo. One JA who does not get it.

I more believe the Al Jazeera report than this story. The Al Jazeera report states that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit handed a Diplomatic Passport to Diezani Madueke, the former Oil Minister of Nigeria and shortly after that, a shell company was formed in Delaware, which followed by the purchase of a building in Manhattan NY, linked to Diezani Madueke. In fact Al Jazeera made it clear that Diezani Madueke PURCHASED that building for PM Skerrit and his wife, Melissa Skerrit moved into that building shortly after it was purchased and later she was joined by her husband as seen in photos. I know for a fact the the US is closing down on investigation and it’s just a matter of time before arrests warrants will be issued

When will Dominicans smarten up!?!?!? Skerrit is in the process of paying for lands that he is not sure is suitable for airport construction. By his own admission he is first acquiring land to do geotechnical studies to determine its suitability for airport development. What if the land is not conducive or suited for airport development? Will he go back to the people and say here is your land we want our money back? It is hard to believe that Skerrit has advisors. Who in earth is advising him to put cart before horse? Most likely a …. is giving that advice. Doesn’t he know that intelligent people read the news from Dominica? Every time Skerritt speaks he appears in my eyes to be dillisional. I am calling on the courts to act quickly and get this deranged man out of the office of prime minister. Failed Skerrit and his failed Labour government has ruined our agricultural base, our farmers and their families are suffering because the focus has been moved from an agricultural based island to one of Passport sales that definitely does not benefit our people. Our farmers have been subjected to abandon their agricultural and failed Skerrit has had to this day no replacement where our hard working farmers could not get on with life. It is the big people out there who benefit from our passports because of Skerrit. Shame.
