Government to give allowances to residents and businesses of eastern district affected by trough system

The government of Dominica has announced that from this month, households, farmers, and businesses from the Eastern District will be receiving allowances to support themselves and their families.

This action came in response to the recent Trough which affected the East and Eastern areas on November 6, 2022.

During a Cabinet site visit to the East and South East of Dominica yesterday, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced that meetings will be conducted in San Sauveur and Castle Bruce on Sunday to update the residents on steps that will be taken to build back and support their communities.

Meetings will also be held in the other neighboring communities which have been affected.

“This month families will start receiving household allowances. Each family will get an allowance to support their family. We will also be supporting farmers and businesses who would have also been impacted by the storms.”

The PM went on to state that looking at the government’s quest to build greater resilience in the Eastern District they have spent “so much money” on roads, water crossings, and drainage all in an effort to mitigate against the impact of climate change.

He made mention of the $127 million dollars which is being spent on a major roadway from the Emerald Pool at Castle Bruce through the Kalinago territory, to Pagua.

“All of this is to mitigate against the impact of climate change and I think once the road is completed it will place the Eastern District in a much better circumstance to withstand and to bounce back from these climatic events.”

The other phase of that road intervention Skerrit stated, would have been from Castle Bruce to Petite Soufriere which he said the government has already “spoken to the World Bank” about it.

“We did not want to hold back the first phase so we decided to proceed with the Emerald Pool to Pagua but certainly the section from Castle Bruce to Petite Soufriere was on the cards.”

He added that more funds will go into the Southeastern communities in the form of a new bridge in Rosalie.

“We have built new bridges in La Ronde and that [have] survived the elements. There are several new bridges from Emerald Pool down to Atkinson, new water crossings, and water catchment mechanisms have been put in place.”

With respect to housing, the PM noted that there are several families that have been impacted.

“There is one hamlet in Petite Soufriere that has been cut off and we are seeking to create some level of access so people can benefit from the properties there.”

He further revealed that all residents have agreed that a long-term solution is necessary with regards to relocating them as “this is the only option for them to consider at this stage having experienced this recently rough.”

With this, a number of actions will be taken such as putting in place a committee of leaders from Eastern communities to assist in identifying possible locations to cite those new residences.

“The intention is to not try not to move too far away from Petite Soufriere and San Sauveur and that will be discussed with the residents at the meeting on Sunday,” the PM noted.

He said the government is fully committed to building these homes and safer communities.

$127 million was spent in the North East?!! Why was not 1 million spent on the Ma Molina bridge in Petite Savanne to connect the South East Communities? The situation with Delices being a dead end now for 7 years really needs to be addressed now. If not NOW then WHEN? With the recent rain we found ourselves shut off again from the rest of the island for 4 nights without road access to town, no electricity, phone and internet. Whenever it rains now we are not sure if our high school students , city workers, getting groceries and access to essential services will be possible. The good news is with all the current slides in the South East the Petite Savanne Hill (the connection between Delices and Petite Savanne) had NO SLIDES. In fact vehicles are driving that road now helping people to commute who desperately need to do get to airport, Roseau etc. A BRIDGE IS ALL WE NEED! Come see for yourself on Sunday 20th @ 2PM in Pointe Mulatre we walk. Walk in our shoes for a sec. One LoVE …

The main objective of the walk tomorrow is to unify the community around the need for the bridge regardless of differences. People can witness the condition of the road and see that the bridge is what is needed. Those who experience the walk can share the experience with fellow men, relatives and friends, who will be motivated to be further engaged. As Coretta Scott King highlighted “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members, a heart of grace, and a soul generated by love.” Thanking you all in advance for being there for us.

No opportunity passes the world’s greatest con-artist without him trying to deceive a poverty-stricken nation.. He practices his dirty, deceptive, disingenuous politics especially at a time of disaster to dupe the desperate and the credulous.

What honest, right thinking patriots want most from the habitual LIAR is for him to no longer impose his polluted politics and corrupt self on the beleaguered people of Dominica.

History has shown that most tyrants meet their Waterloo sooner than they expect for God doesn’t like to be mocked.

Allowances? How much? Some advice for all affected, all you know this man. The man is a serial liar. He couldn’t even tell you how much! Let me tell you, if it wasn’t for his crazy snap election, you wouldn’t get a cent. He would totally ignore you, the same way he did on the day it actually happened. Dominica has no future with this man at the helm. Don’t believe this man! NO ELECTION WITHOUT ELECTORAL REFORM. All you remember that promise of his during his 2019 election campaign? A promise is a comfort for a fool! He proofed this to be true many times! Tell him: enough is enough!

Allowance for a vote. When they receive theyhave to give in return. I Hope that allfamilues get and that the amount is based on how many peopke are in a household. Families with children require more and where the elderly live requires soecial attention.

Boy all that money is good. But people, do we take a time to think of what is really happening?
People what is happening in the East is not natural and it did not just happen by accident, though my heart goes out to the people in the East?
Could It be that God is speaking to us about this Evil man and we have not been listening? Could this be the wrath of God on us for tolerating this Evil man and we not paying attention? I am in my mid 60’s but beaver have I seen the sword of God on this little island as we have been seeing the last 10 yrs. From Erika while Skerrit was in his Bon tan with NG Lap seng, followed by Maria, then Covid and this East coast disaster.
People I got up Sunday morning of November 6 asking why. Then somehow this evil, wicked and heartless man instead of encouraging us to pray for our brothers and sisters the man forgot about the people and announced his 666 election. Now he is talking about money as if money, Diab money is all we need. I see that 666 of…
