Health Minister calls on Dominican youth to reject the use of tobacco

Health Minister, Dr. Irving McIntyre

Health Minister, Dr. Irving McIntyre, is encouraging youth in Dominica to reject the use of tobacco.

His statement came on World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) observed on May 31st.

“As a global state, Dominica will adopt the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Campaign to demonstrate how young people can be empowered to take control of their health and reject tobacco addiction,” Dr. McIntyre said.

He continued, “For years the tobacco industry has developed aggressive strategies and tactics, targeting the youth as an emerging and vulnerable market for its addictive tobacco and products.”

The health minister pointed out that more importantly, right now, studies have shown that smokers have a higher risk of developing severe complications when affected with Covid-19.

According to Dr. McIntyre, tobacco is one of the major risk factors for developing non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, hypertension and respiratory disease which accounts for the top 5 causes of morbidity and mortality in the population.

He said the ministry of health acknowledges that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to protect the health of the youth – both smokers and non-smokers – from tobacco smoke and tobacco products.

On behalf of the ministry, McIntyre urged the youth to take control of their health and work towards a better and brighter future, “building resilience among the next generation of young people against tobacco and moving steadily to a tobacco-free future.”

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May. This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight against the use of tobacco, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living.

“smokers have a higher risk of developing severe complications when affected with Covid-19.”  (Irvin McIntyre).

Let it be known that Irvin McIntyre is a damn liar; ask that guy Irvin where the hell he got that information from; or what sort of research has he done to come to that conclusion.

I would like Irvin to disclose to me; Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque, what sort of scientific methods he used based on his hypothesis, which lead to his theory, before coming to that conclusion.

If Irving cannot produce his written scientific paper on the subject of COVID-19; I want him to reference some medical journal which supports his lie!

Inform that guy that until recently we spoke of coronavirus; then they identify it as COVID-19; and that’s because it was discovered in 2019; medical scientist don’t even fully understand the virus as of yet: They know it is an NRA virus; difficult to find a vaccine, never mind a cure, so what complication is he talking about?

” As a Global State Dominica will.”(Irvin McIntyre).
How do we define “Dominica’ as a global state; what is a global state? What is the definition of global?
The definition of global is relating to the whole world, entirely or comprehensive. An example of global is the condition of air on earth.
So, what is this clown Irvin conveying; nothing more than nonsensical garbage: if you want to advise Dominicans not to smoke cigarette, that can understand and perhaps appreciated; nevertheless, I remember that Roosevelt and the labor party, that includes you proposed legalizing marijuana in the country!
Which is more dangerous, and hazardous to human life?
Marijuana is a mind altering drugs; though some people claim is has medicinal benefits, which of course has yet to be proven scientifically.
Cigarette  by the same token causes cancer; so what’s the difference?
And be informed Irvin, there is no such thing as you said Dominica is a global state.
There is no such damn thing as…

Well said Mr Minister. Something else must be part of the equation, and that “som ting” is ALCOHOL and all its by-products. Rum, Sugar and Tobacco were the Major products for forced African EnSlavement in the Americas. Diseases derived from those commodities, have been the Demise of the Africans and the native kalinago for Ages. Diabetes, Hypertension and certain Cancers, have taken hold of our people from the dawn of Rum and Tobacco Commercialization. A wide range of Medical discomfort emernate from the use of Tobacco, when Rum is added, a knockout one two punch puts you down for the count, some don’t make it back up, while at the same time, putting Family in Peril.

First of all, One of the last great manufacturers THAT ALSO STILL EXPORTS value added agro products is the JAS Garraway & CO. Ltd. (Tobacco Factory), a still very viable manufacturer in Dominica. Secondly, you state that “studies have shown that smokers have a higher risk of developing severe complications when affected with Covid-19.” Your government needs to ensure that that “when” you stated, always remains an “if”. Because you imply that it is inevitable that we get it. Thirdly, what your ministry needs to looking into is the use of herbs to fight COVID-19, cannabis included. In times of tension and stress, people naturally turn to their vices. Also, Hillsborough Special is the best cigarette in the world. All natural, no added wood chips and paper. A Spesh and a Dunhill is chalk and cheese.

Doctor McIntyre, I agree with you about smoking tobacco. All smoking is dangerous to our lungs and health. Can also publicly say that smoking marijuana is also bad for our lungs and health? Can you?

I agree with you, any smoking is bad. Just think you putting smoke inside your lungs and that can cause disease like cancer. If you want to smoke your weed I say don’t, not because Im against you having your pleasure but if you want something good from ganja take a properly tested and approved medication that is made from it.

You know what Mark- in – Tire ,you guys only speak on issues when it’s convenient and fitting to you all.
You commented on the avoidance of young people smoking, that’s fine.
But what about the ” pile of money ” that West Indies Cricket gave to improve young people in sports, more so cricket. Look at the state of sports in Dominica, hardly any good play grounds in the country except whenever election time nears your house slaves do some kind of “Vy- key – Vy ” to fool young people.
There’s this T20 or the CPL that takes place every year and there’s NOT ONE DOMINICAN who can gain a contract with a team.
    Why ?
There’s no incentive to inspire young people.
    No playing field,no mentor,no coach,no leaders.
It’s really heart breaking what you guys are doing to young people in this country.
The only time young people are valued in your eyes ,is during election time.
    Very sad!

I know Mr. McIntyre is health minister and he had to give a speech or say something. But Mr . McIntyre needs to be real and ask himself, what has his government done to stay out of smoke. In other words if not smoke weed or drink rum how will young people cope with what Skerrit and Mr. McIntyre done to Dominica? No cricket, no football, no sports, no work no nothing man! In as much as I don’t smoke or drink but these days I can’t even blame our young people for smoking and drinking as a form of remedy to help them come with the struggles Skerrit, the DLP and McIntyre put our country in. Honestly speaking I think if it was not for smoking and drinking a lot of our young people would be coocoo and plenty more crime would be taking place. These days even people that were Christians are now on smoke and get drunk to help them cope. Say what all you want Dominica does not offer any hope to anyone at this time.

According to Roosevelt Skerrit, I say to McIntire to “go to hell”. To hell with McIntyre, to hell with Skerrit, to hell with Reggie, to hell with Savarin, to hell with Daniel Carbon, to hell with h Valarie and a big to hell with every single member of the gang that has destroyed Dominica!!!
