Over 2,000 reported cases of Chikungunya in Dominica

The Ades Egypti mosquito is the main carrier of the Chikungunya virus
The Ades Egypti mosquito is the main carrier of the Chikungunya virus

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr David Johnson has reported a significant increase in the cases of Chikungunya on the island.

According to the CMO, Dominica now has 2,139 reported cases of the mosquito-borne disease but there is more because not everyone reports to a health facility.

“We know that everybody who has the disease don’t report to the health care facilities. Two weeks ago we had recorded in Dominica 1,959 cases of Chikungunya and that is from the time of the outbreak to then,” he told state-owned DBS radio. “Now that number has increased by another 200, so we talking about 2,139 cases we have reported.”

He added that cases are reported on a daily basis and the numbers keep changing.

Johnson also noted that the biggest issue in combating the disease is a myth among the public that the virus is not being spread by mosquitos.

“Unless we understand that it is caused by the mosquito and try to get rid of these mosquitoes then we will not be able to control the problem,” he said. “Dominica is not the only country that has Chikungunya … several other countries have Chikungunya.”

In the meantime, individuals who have been affected by the disease are being advised that they can also seek assistance from their respective health centers.

  3. cure for Chickunguni
    June 8, 2014

Possible cure for chickungunia: it worked for me and i know of 2 others who instead of laughing tried it too and they are already much better in just 2 days: Find the biggest papaya leaf, cut the big veins out of it, take what’s left, put it in a blender or chop it fine, add half cup of water and make a tea. Let it cool, strain all the leaf out of it and drink a tablespoon in morning and by night drink another. Keep the rest in the fridge. Usually two tablespoons will cut fever and significantly reduce joint pains and other symptoms. Warning; Papaya leaf tea is awesome for high Blood pressure, if you are taking any meds for high bp do not take both. If you suffer from low bp tea will make you dizzy for a while. Note: let the leaf boil down and only drink when cool.

Did the Ministry of Health ask everyone having symptoms of Chik to report to their health center to be counted? Because if not it makes no sense for Dr J to be reporting numbers at this stage. My guess is as good as his right now. And I know whole families who had this disease and never reported so I would say multiply the figure reporting by at least 5 to get a true picture.

Sir, u only know about the reported cases of those who need leave from work there are thousands other cases that do not form part of your statistics. If this comes from a mosquito please declare war on mosquitoes, bring in the ministry of health, environmental health, solid waste department, local government and the police yes i say the police cause dominicans will not do what is expected of them unless it is forced upon them. All of these should come together to get rid of all the old vehicles, bottles, tins, drums and all other garbage that litter our island, also we need to clean up our rivers and unblock all drains. Any child can write a composition for you on how to get rid of mosquitoes, why is it so difficult for those with degrees within the health department to use their knowledge to lessen this dreaded disease that remain in your immune system for up to a year causing pain and loss of income . Please help us we are suffering we need the input of our government.

Medication to cure Dengue/ Chickungonya is the Papaya leaves

take 2 fresh Leaves per person.
    Wash well under tap
    Cut them into tiny pieces
crush it up then squeze the juice out of it

drink 3 spoons of the juice it is rather bitter so for kids and adults who are afraid of medication you can put honey to sweaten

Those who doubt me can check it out on the internet. It is working trust me cause alot of people in Pointe Michel who has it got relieve within hours with it. You can even boil the leave and drink the water but the juice works quicker. Spread the word around.

Let us know of your pharmaceutical process and mode of action conduct ur studies get volunteers say 1000 and treat and compare with those left untreated with your investigative medication. Then release your results. okay Mr/Mrs Bush docter. Also anoni must become part of the reporting team if the affected do not report it themselves and must be able to prove to us how he she/ it became aware of those who are infected and did not report it to the DOH. Anoni is a jack of all trades it looks like. Medicine politics philosophy just name it anoni in toute baguy.

  14. Simply the Truth
    June 3, 2014

Precaution is better than cure. In view of this Chikungunya disease, the government should take precautions that everyone who lands in Dominica should be inoculated and even prior to coming to Dominica from their point of origin.
Ever gave this a thought? Probably those marijuana bushes, the trees which are illegally transported may contain this Chikungunya hidden in them. Those trees are obviously not sprayed for disease-carrying insects or other.
Beware of animals and the likes which may be brought to Dominica and other countries. They may contain the disease.

    June 3, 2014

If something don’t seem right its probably not true.

It may come from mosquitos but the question people should ask is how it got into them.

FYI people don’t report because of the lack of compassionate clinical and hospital staff. Whoever put the emergency staff behind that glass window did a big injustice to the public. The nurses are completely ignoring patients and waiting hours are ridiculous, PMH isn’t busy( The gimmick is to have a flock of people crowd the outside, most of which are waiting for family or friends, and pretend like the staff have so called emergencies, while they giggle and laugh and enjoy there air condition unit) . Plus, the open ceiling isn’t a design for a hospital, its unsanitary, especially the pigeons over head defecating on the floors and internal building structure etc.

    June 3, 2014

Yet, in the midst of that epidemic, the second hospital on the island is completely shut down. You talk about an incompetent team! On top of that Marigot which is one of the largest villages on island does not have a health center just months before an election. can you understand how Dominicans will be treated say a year after a third term? If we love ourselves, our children and our nation, we MUST vote these guys out!

    • dafriend
      June 3, 2014

My estimate, based on the people so far effected in the north of the island, would be closer to 8,000 cases. This is just shear incompetence by this useless government. They have got better things to do right now, i.e. cook up more lies to tell people in order to avoid definite defeat in the election.

How is it the government’s fault that people are affected by this virus? Havn’t the health officials informed people what to do- keep the environment clean-? So the Prime Minister himself must come to the villages and get rid of the mosquitoes-who is he GOD? We need to stop blaming politics for EVERYTHING. Its a bloody EPIDEMIC! THE ENTIRE CARIBBEAN IS BEING AFFECTED! SO DOES IT MEAN THAT EVERY GOVERNMENT IN THE ENTIRE CARIBBEAN IS INCOMPETENT? GET REAL!.

    • yea

I know i did not report when my son and myself had it

    • Observant
      June 4, 2014

I think the ratio is higher than 2:1 since many people use home remedies and the public is being told not to report to to the health centre’s. Most of the reported cases are those requiring medical leave.

    June 3, 2014

Doc you sounding like you are impotent to this crisis.
More than 2000 reported cases, almost 4% of the population is affected by this epidemic and the government is yet to declare it a major epidemic!
I have not seen any fumigation in over a month, now and then you guys put out some dumb news release. What are you all waiting for? When 50% of the population goes down and some deaths?
If mosquitoes are the source what is so difficult to declare war on the pests?
Declare OPERATION CHIGUN GO THERE and get every man, woman and child to clean up, throw the garbage, get Skerrit to contribute $1.0 million from the campaign funds to pay trucks to dump the garbage that is all over.
I give up, you guys are a bunch of JOKERS and you do not expect people to be skeptical about the source being a mosquito.
The incompetence of the politicians is understood but Professional please step up!

      June 3, 2014

This is among the most sensible comment I’ve read here about this disease in a long time. You said it right; 4% of the population yet the government and health authorities do not see the need to declare a major crisis. Are we afraid of loosing out tourist dollars if we declare this an issue?

  22. possie
    June 3, 2014

but it will always have diseases becaue when you report to the ones they say in charge of health in portsmouth about conditions around or close to your homes, they never pay atention.all no if you see a heap of garbage a neighbour has infront of the road in areas where people live you won’t believe it.

    June 3, 2014

Well, Dr Johnson, why don’t you go tete-a-tete with the myth? Convince us that it is truly a mosquito-borne virus. While some of the evidence in favour of the virus being spread by a source(s) other than mosquito only are not scientific, there is much evidence feeding the myth. Tell us, Doctor, why is the virus spreading much faster than dengue which is spread by the same mosquito! Why some homes are mosquito haven, but only one occupant gets the sickness! Tell us, CMO!

educate yourself; up to this morning I heard a doctor dealing with your exact question. when Dominicans make up their minds only they can convince themselves other wise. the internet that we all love so much is filled with information on this virus. USE IT

    • watchdog
      June 3, 2014

@Frank Talker…..is people like you that put doubts in people’s minds that it is not spread by a mosquito! Are you a medical doctor, a health practitioner??? The officials are saying that its a mosquito, this is a fact known around the world, yet in Dominica we try and say otherwise. What is wrong with you people. Stop the breeding of the mosquitos then we will stop the spread of this virus. Instead people listen to foolishness like “its not spread by a mosquito”, and it continues to devastate our people. SMH @ us Dominicans.
