(DNO) The cost of treatment for cancer survivors are among issues to be tackled by the Dominica Cancer Society.
President of the Dominica Cancer Society Father Franklyn Cuffy says the cost of treatment is expensive and most persons are unable to afford it.
He said some mechanisms should be put in place to assist these individuals and this will be addressed when the Society meets.
“I am hoping that one day people who are already suffering will be given some assistance,” he said.
Father Cuffy said he is also concerned about cancer survivors in the public service whose salaries are being reduced while they are on treatment.
“I hope we will get the support from the public and we will negotiate with those in authority. You cannot treat people like that. If someone is sick you shouldn’t interfere with their salaries. This is injustice,” he added.
Father Cuffy has also raised concerns with the lifestyle of the Dominican public.
“We have to take responsibility. The food we eat and drink also has a lot to do with cancer,” he said.
The Dominica Cancer Society is observing 20 years on Sunday.
It's great to know that more and more people are supporting cancer patients. It's a known fact that the medications are too high for common people to pay. Kudos to you guys and hope you can help more people.
I believe that all Dominicans should enroll in some type of health insurance program. They should enroll in something that meets their budget. Too many times Dominicans just live life and when they get sick and need medical assistance they call on the public to assist or the government to help.
It is high time people accept responsibility and get an insurance policy for rainy days.
The same thing goes for assistance to go to study abroad. Parents don’t save or do anything for their children and then when the children want to go off to study they have to run to the government again for assistance.
