Calls are being made for the country’s elderly citizens to be treated with dignity and respect.

That issue was raised by Community Development and Social Services Minister Gloria Shillingford in her address at a graduation ceremony of over 100 caregivers, who participated in an age care programme of the Dominica Council on Aging.

She said the Government is extremely appreciative of such partnerships which are geared towards care for the elderly.

“We all know that the care of the elderly is one of government’s priorities. Last year you saw the launching of the Yes We Care programme which is government’s thrust to provide care for the elderly and ensure that they continue to enjoy a life of dignity,” she added.

Shillingford said government believes that families should take care of the elderly where it is possible.

They have always been treated with respect and dignity except for the vagabonds that don’t have a life and are bent on mistreating elderlys.

  2. Care of the elderly should have nothing to do with the politics of the day, the fact is that someone need to take care of the old; politically active or not, that’s not what it’s all about. Every country in this modern world develops programme’s specifically designed to cater for their ageing and disadvantage citizens.

Dominica should do no less, the care program to me is a very good thing, at least we know that someone of the graduates will be looking in on perhaps a blind and disabled, demented person who will appreciate the attention, the worst thing we want is to politicize the program.

If we politicize it, we’ll find that it becomes partisan, thus some people will benefit, while others yearn for some help.

Remember the old folks in the Village of Wesley Gloria, epically those in mid Wesley, on the hill.

This government should let us know what are their thoughts and feeling about the elderly. Are they only interesting in provinding some care but on the other hand asking them to stay out of politics because of their age.

Care is great but of equal importance is the knowledge we can get from the wealth of experience the elderly have to share.
