Nurses have been urged to remain hungry for information and to read in order to stay abreast with best practices in the profession.
The advice was given by Dominica Nurses Association (DNA) president Rosie Felix as she addressed an opening conference for midwives at the Public Service Union this morning. The conference is being held to observe the second Annual International Day of the Midwife. The theme of this year’s conference is “Reducing Maternal and Perinatal Mortality through Knowledge and Best Practice”.
Felix maintained that in maternal and prenatal care the margin of error is zero.
She reminded the midwives that they should never be weary of advocacy on behalf of patients particularly those of low socio-economic backgrounds who should be guarded against disadvantages in care. She stressed respect of women’s rights to control decisions concerning their pregnancy and birth. “If we cannot do anything to help them feel better, if we cannot build up their self-esteem, let us not do anything to destroy the little they may have,” she stated.
Among those presenting at today’s conference are Dr. Cherusetta Joseph who will be addressing HIV management in Pregnancy and Infancy and Consultant Gynecologist Dr. Bianca Roberts who is to make the keynote presentation.
The nurses need to love their jobs a little bit more. Thats what they need to do…especially those in the casualty who have no patience and think they can talk to you how they want. They need to realise that they are there for a reason which is to care and try to save our lives rather than just being there for the money alone. I think that is their primary focus and it should not be. They need to love their job or get outttttttttt!!!!!!!!!! And thats for the nurses in the Casualty area….They have no feelings, no love, and they need to do better than that…get some training in caring for patience and trying to keep them calm informing them that everythinh will be ok…….
I believe the best way to keep nurses abreast is to provide mandatory workshops, seminars, reviews etc. Assign a number of credits/hours per seminar and a total number per year that nurses need in order to keep working. The same should be done for doctors as well. I believe the entire healthcare system in Dominica needs to be revamped. It’s shocking and unacceptable the number of lives that are lost based on incompetent healthcare professionals and lack of or inadequate equipment. Just a thought: maybe PM Skerrit should focus more on that and less on roads and buildings and whatever personal gain that is to his benefit.
They ought to give that PNO and her supervisors some Human resource training. they deal with pple like is their children they deal with. give Jack his jacket and give Jacquline her lipstick.
but, what about workshops / educational meetings every 6 months or year depending on the topics needing review?
No professional in a progressing field should have to be urged to stay abreast.
None sense! In the health care field the strength and type of medications changes. Pharmacuetical have to keep testing bacterias and viruses because they become immune to the types of antibiotics made today. Also new types of equipments are implemented, there are also diseases we see today we never even heard off before. It would be dumb not to stay abreast with the new and changing equipment and procedures.
