Improper prison medical attention concerns magistrate

Magistrate Candia George has expressed her concern that prisoners at the State Prison are not receiving proper medical attention.

This after an inmate appeared in a Roseau court with a swollen eye he alleged received when he accidentally ran into an elbow.

The injured prisoner requested that the magistrate makes a note on his behalf for him to receive pain killers for his injury. He said he had been begging for the pain killers to no avail.

The magistrate told Inspector Claude Weekes that there has been quite a number of prisoners complaining of improper medical attention and suggested that the nurses assigned to the prison should probably visit more often.

Inspector Weekes agreed with the magistrate’s statement and stated that this is an issue that should be looked into.

when u all dont know about something and the facts to back it up better say nothing. There is a nurse assigned to the prison . Prisoners just like their way most of the time. plain n simple. When you cannot pay for expensive operations n tests they getting it free. when they leave the prison they go back doing the same nonesense again .They leaving the prison looking well when they r released jus give dem a few days n look at them n c how they come miserable. some of them coming with all conditons n waiting for the system to take care of them n when they outside they just dont care.

life can take strange turns, they someone child, mother, father brother, sister, wife & husband everyone deserve proper healthcare isn’t that we want a healthy society these people are going to come back to the outside world and if they are not given proper medical attention in whatever area it’s needed then we are heading for healthcare disaster, and it will be everyone problem so am calling on the minister of health to look into the matter this not a police issue but directed to again the supeintendent & health dept. minister

The nurse should visit the prison at least twice a week, if not more, depending on the need for medical care. Beware if they have to go to the hospital that they do not use this as an excuse to bail out. They will say that they want to use the men’s washroom. It has happened in Canada and no doubt elsewhere. They climb through a window or some exit and take off. Of course, it is only a matter of time when they are caught with prison overalls. If it was arranged and got help, it may take a long while to catch them and I wonder, probably never in a big country. These people are always up to some trick. Therefore the prison authorities must always be on their guard. If they are caught, it will be another charge and their prison sentence will be increased.

As much as I understand that this is prison, which contains many of the society of Dominica’s ills, we have to remember that they are indeed human beings like you and I, and there is no excuse for poor health management.

“ran into an elbow” could be many things that can be misconstrued. He could have been beaten by an officer, he could be the one giving blows when retaliation caused injury to his eye. No one knows but those involved and I doubt they will talk. Nonetheless, let us show mercy to those less fortunate that ourselves.

what good job are u talking about. u are talking like it is good boys that up there. The only thing that u need to say is that medical attention should be given to prisoners on a weekly basis so as to keep them healthy and to prevent the spread of any contagious illnesses. but doh come an say shame on prison superintendant.

this has been taking place going way back its not right not to take care of them to give them any excuse to complain. I say treat them right but keep a close eye on them. Been there done that! can be an old trick in their head. Watch them do not allow them to escape on us.

      @ Shame

The same applies to Canada and of course the U.S. They receive better dental and medical attention, free of charge. They do not have to purchase a thing, not soap or toothpaste and they get three good, nutritious meals a day while incarcerated. Many taxpayers do not have that privilege. They have to pay for their own. Some people cannot afford dental care and other necessities; they are barely making it. If and when they leave prison they are financially better off than you and I, taxpayers who pay for their stay in prison. It costs thousands of dollars a year to keep them in prison. All the same if they are injured or are not well they should promptly receive proper medical attention. They must be treated humanely. They should never be denied this care.
