The Ministry of Health is said to be taking major steps to reduce the incidents of diabetes in Dominica
Health Minister Julius Timothy said government is currently trying to source a vascular surgeon to assist with symptoms of diabetic foot.
“Recently we got in a podiatrist, we are trying to source a vascular surgeon and there are a lot of other things we are doing. We are also partnering with the Rotary Club of Dominica and the World Diabetes Association to put a step by step approach to managing diabetes,” he said.
Timothy said government will be giving a national approach to the issue.
Data from the Health information Unit reveals that diabetes is the third leading cause of both morbidity and mortality in the country.
According to reports, the number of amputations due to diabetes increased from 14 in 2005 to 38 in 2008 and 41 in 2009.
if you want me to bring in a leading hyperbaric would care specialist i shall, he was here before when the chamber was installed and tried to get the hospital to use the million dollar machine for diabetic would care, but it never has been. “that’s for divers”, was the mantra. 99% of all hyperbaric chamber cases are would care. Diving may get one case a year, if unlucky, it is a safety blanket which lets divers know that if the unfortunate should ever happen, they can be cared of on island.
When are you going to wake up and use the chamber properly.
