Mold and fungus force closure of Marigot Hospital

The discovery of mold and fungus inside, the Marigot Hospital has forced its temporary closure, health authorities say.

“It is with regret that the Ministry of Health and Environment informs the general public about the temporary closure of the Marigot Hospital,” a government press release said on Thursday. “The Ministry took such a decision after the discovery of mold and fungus within the structure of the building.”

The release said the closure was taken in the best interest of the staff, clients and the public after careful consideration and consultation with relevant authorities.

“In the meantime, the services provided by the Marigot Hospital have been moved to the Wesley Health Center,” it stated. “Since the closure last week of the Marigot Hospital, officials of the Ministry have been working overtime to find a building in the area properly suited to house a medical facility.”

A press conference will be held on Friday to give an update on that matter.

The Marigot Hospital was first shut down in 2014 because of a severe termite infestation.

At a press conference on May 6, 2015, Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux said a new hospital for Marigot is on the cards because it is a policy decision of the government.

A meeting of the residents of Marigot is expected to take place on Thursday evening to discuss the matter.

MP for Marigot Lennox Linton said that the government is using the Marigot Hospital to play politics with him and the United Workers Party.

“So the Marigot Hospital now has become an avenue where they are hoping to embarrass Lennox Linton by talking about whether or not he is representing the interest of his constituency,” he said on Q95 on Wednesday.

It’s sad that functioning adults have been conditioned to accept mediocrity as the norm. Marigot hospital is out of commission and PMHS isn’t any better, so what gives? Is it political to demand a state of the art hospital capable to rendering medical care to our citizens? Is it political to expect a proper functioning hospital near the island’s major airport? We talk and talk about tourism all day long. Why would tourist want to visit our island for lengthy periods of time, knowing full well that unexpected illness is equivalent to Russian Roulette?

As part of aviation standards, there must be a hospital and and fire and ambulance station in close proximity of any airport. So if the most se sible thing was to shut down the hospital with no temporary location, then the aviation authorities have the right to shut down the airport and the ministers know that.

That labour administration is too wicked. In the last budget debate 4 million dollars was allocated for a health Centre in Vieille Case. Right now there are only 25 students in Vieille Case Primary School. If this not wickedness and victimization, tell me what it is.

The main hospital Princess Margaret Hospital is no better off than the Marigot hospital. In fact it may be worst. The PMH is not being sanitized against anything. There are leaking roofs, contaminated ceilings, damp areas all over the hospital that is conducive to mold and fungus. But added to that there is an invasion of pigeons at the PMH coming from the rubbish dump and yes they nest and defecate all over the hospital. The grounds of PMH is largely overgrown making it conducive to the harbouring of rodents; the garbage disposal and biowaste system is a mess. So the environmental health department should shut down PMH.

      Pigeons? Not birds?
Pigeons lay eggs and produce little ones under roofs and wherever they nest. They destroy roofs of houses. The authorities should ensure their immediate removal.
Ontario is infested with them; probably Canada for that matter. They are a nuisance and unclean. They are supposed to fly south in winter but some of them do not. Some of them, as soon as it is Spring (they know very well when) return to commence laying eggs.
In any case where did these pigeons come from? I was never aware that Dominica had pigeons and not living/breeding under the roof of the PMH.
It is said that some pigeons when flying lose their way and simply lodge where they land. This may be the problem at PMH.
The authorities may have to consult experts on this to remove them. The PMH roof may have to be repaired for they and their poo are destructive. It is also unhealthy for patients, workers and neighbors. They should do their utmost to get rid of them.

The head of goverment should be ashamed of themselves. The main thing on the agenda should be a proper hospital. All the money that was wasted on unnessary things should have put in place to see that this hospital is up and running. There will always be sick people that needs medical attention. Every time i hear or read about Dominica health facilities condition it hurt’s my heart. To the leaders please use common sense. Don’t put the cart before the donkey. Do what is best for your people. Heads of the island. You all bellow bow you love Dominica and its people. Please show me action speaks louder than words. My prayer is that the hospital will be taken care of. Take care of your health facilities. I know that u leaders have big money so if you and your family get sick you can go to a country that has the best doctors. The poor people in Domica. They will be left to die. Please please the outside world is looking.many people do not want to come to Dominica because of healthcare.

It is not unusual that old buildings could eventually have mold, fungus and termites. Moisture could probably cause this.
There is a certain church in Toronto which is presently undergoing repairs due to mold. My personal explanation of this is, the building was not properly built; cheap material and workmanship. However, it is an old church which was built almost 50 years ago.
Some time ago, it was decided that the church hall would be expanded. Prior to this an inspection was conducted. Water was found underneath the church hall which is in the basement of the church.
At this moment, this church is practically closed during renovations which will take some months to complete.

SKERRIT and his supporters may think they punishing ppl from marigot and wesley for not voting but in essense they don’t know they are doing more harm than good given it is the main medical facility that service the islands main airport(douglas Charles) they don’t seem to realise that since seaborne ,humming bird, air sunshine and liat operates direct flights into us ports the FAA can consider dominica as unsafe and downgrade it in effect barring dirrect flights from dominica to us ports.. i wonder who this lazy government will blame should that happens..

      June 10, 2016

You are ridiculous and you know it. It is sixteen years since mr. James was in charge of the country and an M.P. is not responsible for the maintenance and up keep of a national facility like a hospital in the first place. That is the responsibility of the Min. of Health, which itself is is part of the ruling government at the time. Government also has a dept. of Environmental Health. What did they do to inspect and make sure appropriate measures were taken to prevent this situation to develop in the first place?

Throughout the years buildings have weathered seasonal rain and storms. How much rain water and wet soil can those buildings withstand throughout the years, as the Marigot Hospital?
My suggestion to you critics is why not Google the cause of molding, fungus and termites to ascertain what may have caused this problem at the Marigot Hospital?

    • Dominican
      June 10, 2016

Facts, I guess this government and its departments are oblivious of the concept of “preventative maintenance”. Like in your old church in Toronto (…I would not call a 50 year old church old by the way!) bad construction can be blamed and inadequate ventilation could be the result of that because it is well known that molds/fungi thrive in poorly ventilated environments. Lack of- or inadequate maintenance would be another contributory factor, which in turn would indicate poor management. We should stop looking for excuses and lay the blame at the feet of those we appoint, and pay to take care of such matters in the interest of all our citizens, and visitors alike, who are unfortunate enough to need the medical services of a facility like this.

      • Face the Facts
        June 11, 2016

Moisture accumulates, is lodged in the crevices and under some buildings. Most churches are soundproof; to keep sounds of worship and singing in.
The windows are constructed in such a manner that they cannot be opened. At the end of worship, once the congregation leaves, the doors are shut for safety reasons since churches have a security system.
Note the Marigot Hospital building. It was constructed on the ground.. Consider the amount of rain which fall in Dominica. This situation could have been attributed to water leakage and moisture underneath the building which caused the mold and fungus; also improper drainage.
I am not an expert. These are my personal views. There may be an underlying worst situation which I am obviously not aware of.
Construction builders and experts should identify the real cause of this problem.
As far as I am concerned, it should not be a political issue. This situation has to be rectified ASAP without much ado and fanfare.

      • Face the Facts
        June 11, 2016

I would further state, expect this of buildings which are constructed flat on the ground. The same applies to old wooden houses and those with wooden stilts.
This also occurs in houses with basements. During rain/snow storms, water seeps in and floods those areas. Basements must be treated and sealed to avoid water seeping in and molding.
By the way, the entire church flooring which was carpeted had to be removed and repaired. It is called diagnostic repairs. Therefore, there was a serious problem of molding underneath the church. Churchgoers were not aware of it. They did not notice it but the experts did.
I know the church secretary. I have not discussed it with her. During the week the church and the office are closed until they are completely repaired. Sometime I will telephone her.
As the priest said, after the repairs, the church (inside) will be as good as new. Parishioners are patiently looking forward to the end of this inconvenience.

Mr. Brisbane was heavily criticized by Savarin and other DLP operatives for bringing Dominican’s attention to the fact that he was suffering from a personality disorder called Hubris. Maybe they are right. I cannot understand how the man can publicly boast to Dominicans and the rest of the world his intentions to win all twenty one seats when the next general elections come around and at the same time treating the people from Marigot like they are not human beings. It was reported, millions of dollars were spent during the just concluded by-elections in the Soufierre Constituency. Eighteen million dollars will be spent to build a bridge that is not urgently needed. Presently, a few dollars are needed to destroy molds in the hospital, their is no money, that is wicked. By the way, as a young boy, I saw that bridge being built, a young lady died on bridge while is was being built, I say no more.

It is very interesting that today you dont hear the labor party talk about uplifting the poor like Mike and Rosie and Pierro. Back then it was the labor party agsinst the gwo bourge Roseau .

I remember engaging the Prime Minister in a discussion on Kairi FM after I heard him brandishing the purchase of a CT scan as serious development of the health care system in Dominica. I acknowledged the benifit of the scanner but then said to him that it is counter productive to talk about a CT scan whereas two hospitals are infested by pests and rodents. His excuse to me was “how could they have prevented the infestation when it started from the roof. He also told me Kairi that even in America hospitals have infestation problems. During the conversation I realize I was talking to a child that was being protected by the program hist Mervin Paul. Once I began asking the PM to take responsibility and stop these silly excuses Mervyn Paul cut me off.

I am not prepared to give my money to any so called cause in Dominica to help any Dominica government ministers buy SUV’s and hundreds of thousand dollar cars, and million dollar house. For all I care you personally can starve to death: That is called hate; I have defined the word to you!

As soon as anyone speak the truth, all of you the crabs looking for free handouts does is cry hate. Well count me a hater if that pleases you.

        But!

I will not contribute one dime to give you a free lunch: I am retired; nevertheless, I work everyday for my money; I am not prepared to donate anything to feed any of you who are content with Skerrit and the bull, that keeps you all in poverty, always looking for freeness, and then you run out and vote for him!

Everyone who donates money to you all have to earn their money by working, and even when governments from any country donate money which the thieves in Dominica, thief; the money is extracted from the citizen of their country taxes…

The money is extracted from the citizens of their country parole taxes they pay to their government. Sit on your behind and wait on me for a handout, your behind will rot in hell before I contribute a penny to help you!

You all want Labor Party, and Skerrit, let him contribute to your poverty, you are better off that way, and will remain secure in your state of hunger poverty, and wants!

You are an idiot, what can Lennox do, when Skerrit has Dominica heading backward for almost twenty years?

That hospital is over a hundred years old, built out of wood, termites eat wood, they evolved in the earth, and there is nothing anybody can do to prevent them eating buildings to the ground!

So it could be anticipated that termite damage was inevitable: There are only two options available: Repair the the damage caused by termites, or build a new hospital!

And this time build it using lumber treated with termite chemicals which kills them when they come in contact with the wood.

As for the mold they are talking about that is caused by humidity in all cases; when a building is unoccupied, closed up without occasional ventilation mold is compelled to take over. Dominica is in the tropics where the humidity takes over normal temperatures. The mold formed when Skerrit closed the doors of the hospital!

@Black jack – Dotish, is Linton the one employed the government to inspect and maintain government buildings and institutions?

So Linton is the one who should be walking up and down the hospital looking for mold and fungus? Linton is the one who ought to be doing the work that paid government employees should be doing?

I maintain that one will struggle to find a more dotish set of people than Labourites. Phew!!!!

If you want to hold mr. Linton responsible vote him as Prime Minister. He is not in charge but the man, who controls the purse strings.I’m sure the late beloved Pierre Cjarles was referring to people like you when he bemoaned the fact that some Do0minicans wear their ignorance as a badge of honour.

They were reporting, and absolutely nothing was been done.

    • June 9, 2016

The situation at the Hospital was brought to the Labor Department attention long before the DLP recruited Dr. Christmas who was the doctor on call there, how much did he push to see that the hospital was taken care of not , and for him to believe that people would vote for him he was in la la land they rejected him. So Marigot people have a right to show PM that he will never get to rail road them and will never get there votes

Some maintenance workers close their eyes. No exception where I reside. They appear to be as blind as a bat.

  40. It is rather unfortunate but we all know that this very crucial matter will result in nothing more than a bunch of talk by Politicians and some crazy statements made by callers to programs on Q95. In Dominica, everything is sensationalized for a few hours or days then placed in the folder of past grievances and forgotten. You can start with the 2014 elections irregularities then move on to the MyDominicaTradeHouse scandal then tie that in with the famous “suce cel” insult, then carry that into the Public Works debacle and on to the Lindo Park situation. Then you can start again with the news laws that were rushed through by the majority in Parliament having to do with banking and the IPO, tie that in with the unlawful giving away of 15 acres of land in the Cabrits, a part of our national heritage and culture, take that and move to the shell companies in the U.K. owned by the mother of one of the P.M.’s children, then roll right into the panama papers and Marigot Hospital.

    • I hope Dominicans, especially those affected by the closure of this Hospital is getting my drift! Stop being loud mouths calling the radio and saying things that may very well get you investigated and/or arrested. Mr. Peltier on Q95 gives you an avenue to vent ONLY to make HIS programs popular so that he can sell radio advertisements to Fine Foods, Muslim Store, Auto Trade and other business entities. This is why I am extremely confident that no action whatsoever will be taken to bring attention to these issues. Serious people DON’T CALL RADIO STATIONS AND ANNOUNCE TO THE NATION what they plan to do!!! This is the action of coward, fools and loud mouths who believes that by people hearing their voices on the radio they will somehow become famous! The facts is that EVERY SINGLE DOMINICAN IS AFRAID OF THE POLICE and will only talk but never act. The CDPF made sure to set an example in Salisbury that has the rest of Dominica trembling in their boots. I’m watching!

      • June 9, 2016

I agree with you stop calling and saying what you intend to do or what you a going to do .. Look for example a meeting is called for tonight at the Credit Union Hall in Marigot, now the Government representatives called for a meeting tomorrow and I guess they hopped that the organizers for tonight meeting would bow down and I’m very happy to know they will not. Q95 is good for some things but their are times when one have to say forget calling the station with plans because all you would be doing is giving away yourself, just do what you have to let it flow
Now get the people from Sineku, Salybia, Atkinson, Marigot, Wesley, Woodford-Hill, Calibishie to come on board and stand together to fight for your HOSPITAL. Peaceful assemble and no weapon just your cell phones so the pictures can be send out for all Dominicans to see. The AIRPORT and HOSPITAL must be emergencies on the Island of Dominica PM.

Dominicans, please explain to me Range developments, a foreign Co. was given 15 acres of our Cabrits National Park and passports to sell. Skerritt told Dominicans that Range Developments is an “INVESTOR” under the Citizen By Investment Programme, (CBI). coming to invest in Dominica, to build up Dominica, to create jobs, to build hotel, to make money for Dominica. EMPTY-HANDED that so called “investor” came.

Skerritt went to Parliament, amended the Act dealing with the Cabrits National Park and, just like that, carved out 15 ACRES for Range Developments, the foreign Co. and gave 15 ACRES of our PROPERTY, OUR LAND, to a foreigner who came with NOTHING. Whose FOOLS are YOU?

Meanwhile, the citizens of the NORTH-EAST, who were served by the Marigot Hospital are now deprived of such a useful service. Dominicans in those 4 constituencies have worked hard to build that country, and see the ridicule, the wickedness meted out to them. Pure WICKEDNESS.

Typical Dominican authorities… always reactive and not proactive. Shouldn’t this notice have come out at least a few weeks before the facility actually closed? Instead, they issue it after the fact. Still no mention of what the planned work on it will be and how long it will take before it’s reopened. Geez, does nothing change?
