New medical center to use nuclear technology to treat diseases in Caribbean

The medical center was opened in Guadeloupe on June 18

The €8.9-million Guadeloupe Center of Molecular Imaging (CIMGUA) officially opened on the 18th of June and will be the first medical center enabling the screening and treatment of diseases such as cancer, or neurological and cardiac diseases in the Caribbean through advanced nuclear technology.

CIMGUA will facilitate access to advanced health care within the region, providing an alternative and often less expensive option to patients.

The Center was officially opened last week in presence of the President of the Regional Council of Guadeloupe, H.E. Ary Chalus; the Chairman of the CIMGUA and the Sem Patrimoniale, Mr. Guy Losbar; representatives of the University Hospital Center; the Regional Health Agency, the Minister of Health from Anguilla Hon Evans Rogers and the Head of the OECS Commission Health Unit Dr. Carlene Radix.

Nuclear technology contributes to major advances in the area of cancer care and the CIMGUA is equipped with a cyclotron and a PETscan. The combination of both pieces of medical equipment facilitate the screening and treatment of cancers. The cyclotron enables the production of a radiotracer, namely Fluorodeoxyglucose, which is inoculated into the patient to label the cancerous cells. After this first phase, the PETscan measures the metabolic activity of the cancerous cells and facilitates their identification and treatment.

The new Medical Center has been given the all clear from the Nuclear Safety Authority – the organ that ensures the regulation of nuclear safety to protect the public and the environment from the risks of undertaking nuclear activities. Authorizations were granted in July 2017 and May 2018 certifying that CIMGUA was officially ready to begin its operational phase.

Head of the Health Unit at the OECS Commission Dr. Carlene Radix participated in the inauguration of the medical center last week and commended the joint efforts which were critical to achieving the project:

“The Center of Molecular Imaging of Guadeloupe was truly a reflection of cooperation between the civil society, health specialists and several government agencies in Guadeloupe. We look forward to close cooperation so that these services can be extended to citizens living in the OECS,” Dr. Radix said.

The highly innovative Guadeloupe Center of Molecular Imaging provides opportunities of closer collaboration in the area of health between the French territory and neighboring islands.

Patients from the Eastern Caribbean who are usually required to seek medical assistance in North America and other international countries will now be able to access health services in the French territory of Guadeloupe, which is currently in negotiations to become an Associate Member of the OECS.

“the Minister of Health from Anguilla Hon Evans Rogers and the Head of the OECS Commission Health Unit Dr. Carlene Radix. ”

So, let us assume god of the OECS attended the inauguration of this center how much of the proceeds collected from patients will be deposited in Dominica’s treasury? We are so far behind the rest of the world; at one time I understand the now defunct DAAS said they were going to give a CTS to the country I suggested an MRI Machine, which is a lot more efficient than any X-ray or Ct.

The usual cry was ” it is too expensive;” nevertheless in this modern day there are no MRI (magnetic resonance imaging machines in our major hospital.

An MRI is a noninvasive nuclear procedure for imaging tissues of high fat, and water content that cannot be seen with other radiologic techniques. The MRI image gives information about the chemical makeup of tissues, thus making it possible to distinguish normal, cancerous, atherosclerotic, and traumatized tissues masses…

To highlight the advances made in modern medicine by our French neighbors, Admin. It’s time to write an article reminiscing about how “Wood Ants” ate away the Portsmouth Hospital and how “Mold” ran wild within the confines of the Marigot Hospital. You should complete your article with how lucky and privileged the “Big Boys and Girls are” with the ability to fly away on helicopter for treatment in neighboring islands, while the poor suffers and die underneath the carnage and greed of the Labor Cabal.
    Thanks a million.

If this technology can be utilized by Dominicans at an affordable rate, perhaps it can help improve upon our recently reported “third in the world in rates of cancer deaths” statistic.

It definitely can be, however you need leadership for that to transpire. We spent EC$50 million dollars on geothermal energy with zero return. Human Resource is critical for small island nations like Dominica.

So, what does Nuclear medicine in Guadeloupe have to do with Dominica?

Guadeloupe is a department (colony) of France, the same as Martinique. France is one of more developed nations, obligated to look after the medical welfare of their citizens, I doubt when they introduce that form of medicine in Guadeloupe they had Dominica in mind!

Nuclear diagnosis is not new; it simply involves the use of small amounts of radioactive materials “tracers” to help diagnose and treat a variety of diseases, it help to determine the cause the medical problem based on function of the organ tissue, or bone!

If we are happy about such development in a foreign country, what are we going to do to bring such scientific technology into our country; or shall we simply relax and say “we doh want it Guadeloupe have one already;” as we said when the idea of building an International Airport; when the Labor Party said ” we doh want it because Antigua and Barbados have one already!”

I think we don’t want it because: Antigua has one, Barbados has one and Guadeloupe has one is the correct answer. With the number of cancer cases rising steadily, we should invest in such treatments for our people. Then again, we do not have a government with any vision whatsoever. If they can’t purchase proper garbage truck to collect and dispose of garbage, I highly doubt that such technology will make it to the shores of Dominica.

Anthony; “we doh want nuffing eh because every other country have one already!”

        Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Did you read where some fool suggested that ” make Gwada part of OECS and negotiate cheaper fees for us in Caribbean.”

This is when I like to use the patios word sot: I do not know where such dunce people come from, the way the fool is talking is as if Guadeloupe is not in the Caribbean. Guadeloupe cannot be part of the OECS as long as it is a colony of France!

In that case France would have to be a member!

They say our country is a fools paradise; if there was any doubt in my mind I an convinced now more than ever that theory is true! Doctors are doing organ transplant in Antigua, in Dominica hospitals are allowed to go into dilapidated states of decay due to rodents and termites infestation.

Thank God for Roosevelt Skerrit, Elizabeth Xavier said Roosevelt is appointed by God to rule over Dominica oui!

        Hhhahahahahahahahahahahaha: Poor…

I am sure we going to get that in our new “STATE OF THE ART HOSPITAL” that Skerrit and his followers have been talking about for the past million years.

Doh kill me today nuh.

Meanwhile, Roosevelt continues to fool those “Stupid Red Supporters” with cheap cane rum and a hospital that cannot finish, while they shouting in the streets “Labor is Working.” Continue fooling them like the sheep that they are.
