New PMH matron promises ‘next level’ nursing

The newly appointed matron at the Princess Margaret Hospital who is promising to take PMH nursing to the “next level”, says she’ll be concentrating on improving the nursing sector in Dominica.

Leticia Lestrade Wyke told a press conference on Tuesday that under her watch, customer care will take precedence.

“Our customers are our clients. For me if we improve in that aspect, we will improve in delivery of nursing care. I hate when people come to us with negatives. If I could continue and not have those negatives, life would be good,” she told reporters.

Wyke admitted that the operations of the PMH face serious challenges.

However she sounded confident in giving assurances that measures would be put in place to tackle them.

“I am willing to work with the public. They can come with their concerns.  I don’t say the nurses are wrong and I don’t say they are right either. I investigate and we deal with the situation. We have measures in place and we deal with it,” the new matron affirmed.

Her appointment took effect March 01, 2012.

This new matron needs to concentrate on the so call nurses, some of whom are just there for a pay check. They need to be more professional. I know a guy who fell sick and his family did not even know. He got a stroke and could not feed himself. They would put the meal on the table and turn their backs not even offering to help feed him. then they would pass around and pick up the tray. This happened for two days in a row until his family found out that he was in the hospital. When the mother of the guy found out what was going on,The Nurse on duty said to her, that she didn’t know it was her son. My concern is, because you don’t know the family of someone doesn’t give you the right to treat anyone like an animal. Alot of nurses treat people by who they are. If their family is MR this and MR That so call Burgoise, then they go the extra mile. That is PATHETIC. Sickness does not choose. We have some very good professional nurse in D.A an I commend them for their goods service and job well done, but some of them are horrible. So Matron try to work on that. We are all equal inspite of our circumstances. some of us lack EMPATHY. Lets work on that.

We really do need next level nursing for the better .. Most of the nurses have I don’t give a attittude !!They are there just because of the salary , and not because they really do take nursing seriously as their profession . Most of these nurses treat patients like crap .. They have no love , care and no compassion at all .

what salary! Come work a day in a Nurse shoes and you would shut your mouth! A lot of Nurses are there because they love their profession. If you was talking 4000 to 5000 a month but for a salary at the end of the month after paying bills you brokes like the rest of the majority of Dominicans

I commend you on such a positive approach, I must, however make two suggestions, we are no longer under this colonal rule therefore it is high time that this hospitals name be changed to reflect our own nationalism, and the word Matron is also derived from the imperilist days it should be changed to “Director Of Nursing”.

Surely matron did not say:” Our customers are our clients” because they are one and the same thing. And if she did say that, she must have meant:” Our patiens are our clients”. Anyway,I wish her every bit of success because shall all benefit.

Perhaps it’s the piece of her statement that DNO published, but from what I have read here, not impressed. This does not sound like a commitment to improving customer service or community engagement. I was expecting from the “next level” nursing article.

      May 2, 2012

UHUM and where are those “private and better qualified Drs?””

The Drs. are pompous, ill-mannered and self-righteous. Nurses do a damn sight far better job than they ever would. Take that from one who has worked at the top class hospitals of Central London. Those Drs here are worse. They never seek second opinions and just prescribe paracetemol and ibuprofen for everything. GO PRIVATE off course.

one thing you must remember matron, is to provide professional development for all nursing saff and equal opportunity must be the driving force for this venture.

Training is very essential to ensure that high standard quality care is delivered to all patients at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Remember to be objective in your approach and above all remain IMPARTIAL!!

Listen to the facts and do not be judgemental.

Your attitude and level of professionalism can make a significance difference to motivating your workforce, to enhance job satisfaction and to elevate the standards of care at PMH.

A motivated, respected and valued workforce brings credence to an institution!!!!

    Remain focused!!!
