The National HIV and AIDS Response Programme in the Ministry of Health has launched a newsletter in an effort to improve information dissemination to its stakeholders.
Coordinator of the Programme Julie Frampton said that the newsletter titled “A Touch of Red” will highlight the activities that are taking place with HIV in Dominica quarterly, as well serve to further educate the public on the disease, presented in a very concise way.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Rhoda Celaire congratulated the initiative by the Framton and her team.
Celaire said, “I would like to comment the HIV/AIDS Unit on the publication of its first issue of its newsletter. I want to commend the staff, because it’s a hard working staff. It’s one of the units that I don’t have to supervise. I love departments that can use their initiative.”
Frampton stated that the work that the media has been doing in partnership with them has not been enough and the department has taken it upon itself to produce and edit its own document that will be circulated to health centers, ministries, hospitals and to the general public.
She remarked, “The media has a role to play in HIV information because you go to the schools and community groups and people still cannot define HIV, which is not good. So we need assistance all around and the media needs to do a little more. The newsletter is supposed to improve dissemination. “
Because the Programme produced the document themselves, costs associated with the newsletter were only about $600 but Frampton believes that it will certainly make a difference.
“I believe it will make a great difference because we always have people coming to the office asking information about HIV. I mean, people still don’t know that you can be tested for free. We hope it will be sustainable,” she said.

just yesterday i saw a youtube.. a link i will not post n admin wouldn’t allow it anyway… the vid showed a man and allegedly a popular female street vagrant in roseau having sex…. what troubled me is not that they were having sex… but the fact that this young man looks like a healthy dominican man any young woman could fall for once he come with the right approach…. it wasn’t a male parro etc…. he didn’t even seem to had put on rubbers… jus gave her money… he pull down his pants and she bend… then he stroking away… disgusting when u think that this young man and many like him is lurking around…. now i’m not saying that ‘she’ has a disease… but i’m guessing since she’s not mentally fit.. and is being abused then lots of guys must have been going behind her… i mean cmon… that person *refuse to print name*.. i rather pay a clean chick $1000 with my rubbers on b4 i go there… this is the risk alot of young people in d/ca is at… and yet still the level of promiscuity among them is appalling… it has even become cool for ladies to have sex with at least 1 different man every weekend… wow!!! it’s like a competition out here… sad thing is most of the people who need to see these information… u’d not find them reading on a d.n.o news article….

I know what you mean….I know exactly what you mean. I know this notorious community in Dominica where HIV spreading like wild fire. dats a great idea.. I hope people will read the newsleters and take it seriously cuz AIDS is real.. Many people are scared to get tested but people should go ahead get tested..It’s best u know ur status than u don’t.
Now we should publish the names of those who have the diseases. Irrespective of how they got it . Having AIDS is like walking around town with a loaded gun in hand, and shooting people at random. Soon laws will be amended where people who intentionally spread the diseases can be held accountable.
this would indeed have the opposite effect…people would not get tested….they would be much more secretive about their aids status there are lots of people with high moral standards who contract the disease from their spouse of pardner whom they trusted…what if that were too happen to you …would you want your name to be published?

Conventional wisdom suggests that the best way to reverse an epidemic is through education.
‘Black’ people are generally under-educated.
Thus, it stands to reason that they’d be the most likely to be affected.
Also,if you cannot define it, it speaks to how well you are able to avoid it.

Great job Ms. Framptom and the HIV unit. We have a disaster waiting to happen on our hands with this AIDS pandemic and people are taking this thing lightly.
Thanks to new meds, we will have alot of infected people still around, but behaviors must change in order to see a reduction in infection.
I know it was a gwaya to get that $600 but God is good, hopefully both government and the private sector takes this thing more seriously and inject some serious cash into it.
