Newtown Health Center to shut down; to be relocated

The Newtown Health Center is said to be rodent infested
The Newtown Health Center

Just after announcing the temporary closure of the Marigot Hospital due to the discovery of fungus and mold last week, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Helen Royer also revealed that authorities will be closing down the Newtown Health Centre and will be moving to a new location.

“Newtown has been reported and we are aware and actually we have gotten a house … it’s been about three weeks to a month,” she revealed. “We have gotten a new location; we have gotten a lot of problems in getting a house and accommodation for the relocation of Newtown.”

She noted now that a new location has been found, it is to be retrofitted.

“The scope of works is being done by Public Works now and we are waiting, we have the money on budget to do the retrofitting,” Royer noted.

According to her, a meeting was planned with residents of Newtown to further address the situation.

Authorities have announced that the Marigot Hospital is to be relocated and a new location has been found.

We should be in talks about fixing the various health centers in Dominica and relocating some of them so that persons are able to better access these clinics… thats what we should be talking about… Hurricane season go and come and not one river has been dredged… We have the entire E.O LeBlanc Highway to fix that whole stretch from Layou to Posse ready to fall and you mean to tell me Skerrit just talking about building Hotels in the country. We don’t have access to proper health care in our own country and you want to bring hotels to accommodate guests from all over… what going to happen when one of the guests needs serious medical attention? Just give them PARACETAMOL? We really need to ask ourselves a question in this country. Yes labour has certainly done a few things over their years power one cannot deny… But 16 years is too long for a party to be in power… Labour has been complacent for a considerable amount of years. The same people getting the same jobs…

I will continue to say that despite all the failures of those in charge of tourism, health, education etc they are still entrenched in their cushy jobs with all kinds of benefits…traveling here and there on D/can’s pocket. They alone know how they got their jobs and why failure after failure cannot unseat them.
When UWP followed by DLP started the culture of sacred cows no one knew the effect it would have on D/ca in twenty years time. Well folks…time is telling. We know longer have to wait and see.

The ministry of Health among all ministry seem to be the most unhealthy stressful health care system in the OECS and CARICOM. OMG what is really going on in this country. 18 minister each of them have at least 3 advisors and technical officers . They all drive expensive cars and wear top quality suits and clothes. They get 1200 a month medical insurance plus entertainment allowances. When they fall sick helicopter fly them out. With all this happening in broad day light the ordinary people shout Labourh ka triavez. Monies are being spent on all kinds of arbitrary things while matters most are being neglected. All the people look forward to is a sewo there and a sewo here and that satisfies the people of Dominica. The people can not find time to attend to any meaningful and productive discussion or forum however they will dress in a red shirt spend hours in an unproductive, time wasting political campaign bashing people while the society rot away.I mean I give up bro!

Minister Darroux, once again you have lost your way with the Dominican people. You have failed them once again.Where is it going to end.Labour ka mal twavie.Waste of resources in a poor country.I’m sure you don’t care about the poor of Dominica, which is evident in the dilapidated state of health care facilities around the island. All we keep hearing is Skerritt is seeking to bring this hotel and that hotel, which has not materialized, yet he neglects to provide adequate money for maintenance and up-keep of health facilities. No wonder his children were born in the USA.But what about those who can’t afford to or have the connections to have medical attention overseas. It pains my heart.Ahh Labour Party, what do you have against Dominica. All sectors in decline, poverty on the rise, people kept in ignorance on the real state of affairs in the country.Things are really bad and getting worse

I weep for Dominica, but again, Dominicans do not respect themselves. After all, this is their choosing. Meanwhile, the health sector is the worst it has ever been in history. I may never return to this country, and that too saddens me. I long to return, but I respect myself too much to do so.

This is just a WICKED scheme to dampen the righteous outrage of the Marigot, Wesly, Kalinago people, because they know the people of Newtown and catchment areas will not be affect outraged as the people of Marigot. What they will not do is tell the little people that the people of Newtown have to reason to be as outraged because they are less threatened by the absense.
They are less threatened because they have close alternatives within a 2.5 mile area:
PMH, Health Center in Gardens, Hillsborough Medical, numerous doctors within the city.

Where is the Director of Primary Health Care in all of this?
How is that two centres under your direct supervision are closed down within days of each other?
Where are the Chief Health Nurses, who’s responsibilities are to oversea these things?
Where are the technical persons in the ministry of health to make sure that those things don’t happen.
animal infestation? what is going on?
what is going on in Dominica?

DNO i wish i could use some real choiced words to express my disgust. How do you build a $27 million palace and a health clinic within the capital city looks like copra house and to even allow pooopool and rats to take over the copra house clinic.
How on earth the piticians in government can build multimillion dollar mansions and villas yet government buildings for healthcare are being abandoned. How it is the government does not have money to provide basic healthcare but there is money for Airport renaming party, bridge ground breaking party, doctorate party,bi election vote buying party, Baroness sousay sell party.
You give people $100 bills to buy top up and rum and the peoe get a 5 minute high bht when these people need mefical attentikn the same benefactors allow the people to endure many years of humiliation and shame.
I would like to blow out some steam but rightly so DNO would not allow it

OMG, what is going on? Who is responsible for ensuring that stuff like that does not happen? And why hasn’t anyone been held accountable? Haven’t the people in charge heard that “a stitch in time saves nine”? Why not take preventive measures before the medical facilities become a toxic hazard? So many questions, so little accountability. Moving to a new location is but a temporary solution. A more permanent solution is to engage a more professional mindset on medical facility management. And maybe a few heads may need to roll to implement that new mindset.

What is going on here? I was in Dominica in march and went to the clinic in roseau for a tooth ache not only is the place looking like a horse stable I was told that i have to be there by 7 am, well i had my tooth taken care of in new york the same city where Skeritt ‘s children were borne and i am sorry for the people who vote for a sheet of plywood and a toilet but are left to die because of medical need .ITis past time for a shake up. things cannot get worst than this .

There is an explanation for rat invasion which could be a problem in any building. Rats chew their way into buildings and up pipes. There could also be holes especially underneath the sink and woodwork also where the pipe is connected. Rats chew through wood; not iron pipes, if they are sealed. If there were no holes, the Center would be devoid of rats.
There is also a reason for mold. As I have previously stated, poor workmanship and inappropriate material coupled with rainy weather, an accumulation of it and a build-up of moisture could contribute to mold.
Some contractors skimp on material to save money, resulting in poor material and workmanship.
If it is possible, examine the woodwork and the type of building material that was used to build this Health Center including the Marigot Hospital. Call in an expert, a professional to inspect these buildings.

Fire station, bridge, health centers, running down. New stadium need repairs and will cost tens of thousands in annual maintenance. Airport facing constant erosion from river in the west end and sea on east. The main hospital is a disaster waiting to happen. Yet millions spent irresponsibly on non essential services and electioneering. I will say againg you can build the biggest hotels, fancy rodas, fancy state house and all such things if it is not by the people, for the people, it means nothing. The country like the church is the people, and for true development to take place, true change has to be in peoples lives. Jobs, disposable income, self reliance, investment, retirement, ability to raise your family and pay for thier school, ability to own your home independent of welfare, ability to acquire property. A sucessful church is not how big and beautiful the building is but how many souls they can send to glory. You will know them by thier fruits.

Somebody has got to be joking. DNO, is that really a picture of the Newtown Health center of somebody dwelling house?

After 16 years of Labour – 16 YEARS OF LABAAAR, that is how the health center in Newton looks? Nah man. You mean to tell me people going to check on matters related to their health in a dismal dreary looking place like the one in the photo?

A set of wooden benches? Wait nuh, where dem wooden benches are located is the waiting area??

Can somebody tell me what the inside of that building looks like?

Things like this make me detest the Labour party even more.

that [photo is not the true image of the new town clinic, that is not the usual look, ask the care takers why they have those things hang up there like that, please pass and see it in the normal clinic hours and it will not be the same

Further negligence. Negligence to maintain the center to an acceptable standard and this time it are the residents of Roseau south that are the innocent victims. It is the government’s responsibility, through their Ministry of Health to maintain these facilities as a priority. It is public health we are talking about it and not a party to celebrate a party political event. The government, in my estimation, seriously has got its priorities wrong.
