UPDATE: No Swine Flu in Dominica – Dr. Darroux

Darroux spoke at a press conference on Wednesday
Darroux spoke at a press conference on Wednesday

Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, has said that there is no Swine Flu in Dominica at this time.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday he said there are no confirmed laboratory results of such cases in Dominica.

He stated that over the years Dominica has experienced a number of flu outbreaks with a number of viruses presently circulating in Dominica.

Darroux noted that the main virus circulating on the island right now is the H3N2.

He said to this date, the Ministry of Health can confirm that there are three (3) different types of virus circulating in Dominica. They are the Parainfluenza type 2 virus, the Rhino virus and the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

In a recent release from the Ministry of Health, it was reported that some persons are presenting with the mild flu and others with severe flu-like form of the flu.

“On the onset, I want to state category that, as we speak that there is no documented, no official, no laboratory confirm case of Swine Flu here in Dominica,” Dr. Darroux revealed. “From the reports I have been given…we have three different viruses here in circulation.”

According to him, the seasonal flu is something that is experienced every year.

“It has become almost like a cultural norm now where these flues are now named after whatever is trending at the time…,” he said.

He denied that that Ministry of Health has been withholding information from the public.

“Listening to different sources from different media you get the impression that the Ministry of Health has been withholding information from the public,” Dr. Darroux remarked. “Misquoting something that was said in the information that the Ministry of Health put out I don’t see how this can now be blamed on the Ministry of Health.”

Dr. Darroux noted that, “the idea that you think that Swine Flu is out there killing people and the Ministry of Health killing people, people dropping like flies and the Ministry of Health is not saying nothing about it, we holding information, Dr. (David) Johnson (Chief Medical Officer) has it in his back pocket and all of this is preposterous.”

To The Public in Panic from a Docto

    H3N2 VS H3N2V

    From WHO website – http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs211/en/

Seasonal influenza is an acute viral infection caused by an influenza virus.

There are 3 types of seasonal influenza viruses – A, B and C. Type A influenza viruses are further classified into subtypes according to the combinations of various virus surface proteins. Among many subtypes of influenza A viruses, influenza A(H1N1) and A(H3N2) subtypes are currently circulating among humans.

Influenza viruses circulate in all parts of the world. Type C influenza cases occur much less frequently than A and B. That is why only influenza A and B viruses are included in seasonal influenza vaccines.

    From the CDC – http://www.cdc.gov/flu/swineflu/h3n2v-cases.htm

H3N2v is a non-human influenza virus that normally circulates in pigs and that has infected humans. Viruses that normally circulate in pigs are “swine influenza viruses.” When these viruses infect humans, they are termed “variant” viruses.

Those are two different viruses get your facts straight keep yourself informed

Doc, isn’t it a fact that his virus can crossover to human beings and in fact has been known to do so? We should be told all the facts instead of being accused by the P.M. of talking negatively about our country just in case it scares the tourists away. Yes, precisely because I have my home here we need to know. P.M. can go and live comfortably overseas tomorrow if he wants. He should care more about his people, whom he pretends to love so much.

Is H3N2v the same as the H3N2 flu virus that makes people sick each flu season?

No, H3N2v is different. H3N2v is a variant virus that is in pigs and has infected some humans.

Why doesn’t the Health Department have mandatory flu vaccine especially for the vulnerable citizens, the young and elderly? It really helps. We go through the same flu season in the United States. I have my flu-shots every year and have never gotten the flu. I think the citizens should be more aware of the importance and benefits of the flu vaccine. The awareness of the flu vaccine should be done through the media (radio and television) and also pamphlets should be given out at clinics. I understood the vaccines are available but it is not properly executed to the citizens awareness. I hope next year that prevention methods will be made readily available. As a health provider, I have empathy for my people of Dominica and it is time to take action.

The government’s responsibility is to make the vaccine available and to educate on who will benefit most from it. It is not the government’s responsibility to make receiving the vaccine mandatory.

From Wikipedia on the internet “Swine influenza, also called pig influenza, swine flu, hog flu and pig flu, is an infection caused by any one of several types of swine influenza viruses. Swine influenza virus (SIV) or swine-origin influenza virus (S-OIV) is any strain of the influenza family of viruses that is endemic in pigs.[2] As of 2009, the known SIV strains include influenza C and the subtypes of influenza A known as H1N1, H1N2, H2N1, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3.”
Mr Minister please note H3N2 is included.

MR Daroux and the Mr Johnson have it all wrong and misleading us the H3N2 is strain or variant to swine flue when the swine flue is found in human it not called swine if it is called: Influenza A H3N2 variant viruses (also known as “H3N2v” viruses) with the matrix (M) gene from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic virus were first detected in people in July 2011.
Please see the american center for disease control please my people click the link below educated yourself we are being misled DR Johnson by the minster and because the populace do not know about medical term.

Did the Ministry of health and dept. of environmental health ever check that controversial pig farm near La Plaine? I don’t mean just the alleged unhygienic disposal of waste but the animals themselves? I don’t think so but the government awarded the owner a state honor during our Independence day. Go figure.

Thank you Dr. Darroux. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) in Atlanta says that H3N2 variant viruses (also known as H3N2v) can also infect birds and mammals (incl. pigs)and kills and estimated 32,000 people in the U.S.A. each year. CDC especially recommends humans to avoid contact with pigs or take precautions when doing so. Dr. Darroux can say what he wants but I would like our pig population to be tested to see whether or not they carry this virus, including the abattoir, just to put our minds at ease. In the mean time I will stay away from areas where pigs are farmed. That is not too much to ask is it?

    November 23, 2016

Doc come better than that. H3N2 is a a flu that normay circulates in pigs….meaning it is a strain of swine flu. H1n1 is also a strain of swine flu.

  19. No surprise here: any time someone like Darroux tells you to run out of your house because it’s on fire, just continue to lay in bed and sleep.

The fact that he has made the claim that there is no Swine Flue in the country; it is because it is already there, and he is lying about it.

What laboratory test has Darroux done, what specimen he used to conduct his test, who is the host blood he used to test and come to his conclusion?

DNO I must admit that I now have a very hard time believing anything that is published on this site because for you to have a story posted yesterday about 1 PM and four hrs later it was removed, without any explanation, clearly tells me that you are not as credible as I thought. Yes, I heard the explanation given on Q95 today, but if you published something you got from GIS (Government information Service) and to pull it out within hours because according to Roy, the doc that was quoted was incorrectly, is further proof that GIS and all the news media in Dominica are incredible and unprofessional and therefore their reporting cannot be trusted, unless it is the information Skerrit wants out. ALL of you starting with Matt, are very scared of Skerrit and that’s what makes Dominica a SAD story.

it is a swine flu variant….

    Main article: Swine influenza

Pigs can harbor influenza viruses adapted to humans and others that are adapted to birds, allowing the viruses to exchange genes and create a pandemic strain.
“In swine, three influenza A virus subtypes (H1N1, H3N2, and H1N2) are circulating throughout the world. In the United States, the classic H1N1 subtype was exclusively prevalent among swine populations before 1998; however, since late August 1998, H3N2 subtypes have been isolated from pigs. Most H3N2 virus isolates are triple reassortants, containing genes from human (HA, NA, and PB1), swine (NS, NP, and M), and avian (PB2 and PA) lineages. Present vaccination strategies for SIV control and prevention in swine farms typically include the use of one of several bivalent SIV vaccines commercially available in the United States. Of the 97 recent H3N2 isolates examined, only 41 had strong serologic cross-reactions with antiserum to three commercial SIV…

As of 2009, the known SIV(Swine influenza virus) strains include influenza C and the subtypes of influenza A known as H1N1, H1N2, H2N1, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3.
