Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, has said that there is no Swine Flu in Dominica at this time.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday he said there are no confirmed laboratory results of such cases in Dominica.
He stated that over the years Dominica has experienced a number of flu outbreaks with a number of viruses presently circulating in Dominica.
Darroux noted that the main virus circulating on the island right now is the H3N2.
He said to this date, the Ministry of Health can confirm that there are three (3) different types of virus circulating in Dominica. They are the Parainfluenza type 2 virus, the Rhino virus and the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
In a recent release from the Ministry of Health, it was reported that some persons are presenting with the mild flu and others with severe flu-like form of the flu.
“On the onset, I want to state category that, as we speak that there is no documented, no official, no laboratory confirm case of Swine Flu here in Dominica,” Dr. Darroux revealed. “From the reports I have been given…we have three different viruses here in circulation.”
According to him, the seasonal flu is something that is experienced every year.
“It has become almost like a cultural norm now where these flues are now named after whatever is trending at the time…,” he said.
He denied that that Ministry of Health has been withholding information from the public.
“Listening to different sources from different media you get the impression that the Ministry of Health has been withholding information from the public,” Dr. Darroux remarked. “Misquoting something that was said in the information that the Ministry of Health put out I don’t see how this can now be blamed on the Ministry of Health.”
Dr. Darroux noted that, “the idea that you think that Swine Flu is out there killing people and the Ministry of Health killing people, people dropping like flies and the Ministry of Health is not saying nothing about it, we holding information, Dr. (David) Johnson (Chief Medical Officer) has it in his back pocket and all of this is preposterous.”

Why doesn’t the Health Department have mandatory flu vaccine especially for the vulnerable citizens, the young and elderly? It really helps. We go through the same flu season in the United States. I have my flu-shots every year and have never gotten the flu. I think the citizens should be more aware of the importance and benefits of the flu vaccine. The awareness of the flu vaccine should be done through the media (radio and television) and also pamphlets should be given out at clinics. I understood the vaccines are available but it is not properly executed to the citizens awareness. I hope next year that prevention methods will be made readily available. As a health provider, I have empathy for my people of Dominica and it is time to take action.
The government’s responsibility is to make the vaccine available and to educate on who will benefit most from it. It is not the government’s responsibility to make receiving the vaccine mandatory.

Thank you Dr. Darroux. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) in Atlanta says that H3N2 variant viruses (also known as H3N2v) can also infect birds and mammals (incl. pigs)and kills and estimated 32,000 people in the U.S.A. each year. CDC especially recommends humans to avoid contact with pigs or take precautions when doing so. Dr. Darroux can say what he wants but I would like our pig population to be tested to see whether or not they carry this virus, including the abattoir, just to put our minds at ease. In the mean time I will stay away from areas where pigs are farmed. That is not too much to ask is it?
