The activity which was held outside the business place located on 23 Great Malborough Street, in Roseau showcased some of the services offered by the company.

“Well basically what we are doing is having a display outside here showcasing stuff from the office because today is World Sight Day,” Accounts Manager at Optipharm Eye Centre, Odette Theodore told Dominica News Online on Thursday. “What we wanted to do is get at least some members of the public, as they pass by, to show them what we have to offer for eyes and what they can do about it, how they can take care of their eyes, what frame that we can recommend for them, what other services that we offer besides you coming in, getting an eye exam.”

According to Theodore the company also offer eye surgery.

“There are some common diseases like nearsightedness, farsightedness , glaucoma … we also have cataract and we do surgeries for these things,” she stated.

She continued, “For the nearsightedness and farsightedness most times people do the lens or do glasses itself, so once you get a prescription you get that…we can order the lens for you , we can put it into the frame for you so basically you come and get an all care package here.”

Theodore stated further that the Eye Centre has its own Eye Special/Surgeon and Consultant, Dr. Benet C. Henry.

“He does cataract surgery, he does Pterygium surgery and have been operating here for the last five to six years…it tries to do surgeries almost every month, more or less so we could have probably four or more people per month, but it depends on what they need and how quickly they need it,” she explained.

She advised persons to check their eyes at least once a year, “because you never know what will happen.”

“Sometimes you don’t see or feel, for example glaucoma you can actually have vision loss and not recognize with glaucoma that you actually have vision loss…,” she said. “Most people suffer from vision loss and they don’t know, because it’s not just frontal vision it’s on the side as well and people don’t recognize that.”

World Sight Day, is a day dedicated to global awareness for blindness and visual impairment.

World Sight Day was observed under the theme: “Eye Care for All”.
