The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is giving support to the Ministry of Health in response to Tropical Storm Erika.

PAHO Country Representative, Shirley Augustine, says PAHO has been supporting the Ministry by managing information and coordinating the Health Emergency Operation Centre.

”At the time of the storm, PAHO had already had two engineers stationed in Dominica working on the assessment for the smart hospital project as well as a consultant who was completing a vulnerability assessment for climate change. On Saturday evening the first PAHO team arrived with the St Lucia Coast Guard followed by the Chief Medical Officer with supplies. A Health Disaster Specialist as well as an Environmental Health Specialist also arrived on the vessel.”

She noted, “They have been doing a lot of work since they got here. A donor proposal was developed for response and recovery operations as well as a list of supplies and logistical needs were developed.

On Monday August 31st, we were joined by a PAHO Supply Management Consultant who arrived and hit the ground running training 12 persons to use specific software for logistics on Monday and 28 on Tuesday. The consultant also evaluated the temporary medical storage options.”

She says PAHO remains committed to helping with the disaster relief efforts in Dominica.

“The Disaster Specialist met and coordinated with agencies such as The Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), the World Bank and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

“We have also assessed the public health issues as the Dominica Grammar School, the Bath Estate Primary School and the Roseau Health Center. On September 2nd, a PAHO Water Engineer arrived to support DOWASCO with supplies from PAHO Barbados including 20 radios which we were expecting. PAHO is also helping support a team of nurses coming in from some of the islands.”
