The Primary health care system in Dominica will in the not too distant future receive a boost from six specialized doctors who are now pursuing post graduate studies abroad.
“The ministry is working towards increasing specialist services in the primary health care system and as we speak six doctors are pursuing post graduate studies to augment the health care service delivery on their return,” according to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Helene Royer.
She made the remarks while addressing a national stakeholder’s consultation on primary health care at the Princess Margaret Hospital on Wednesday.
She said the ministry is pleased to remain dedicated to improving the island’s existing primary health care but noted it is a daunting task and the specialist services will go a long way.
“The government thought its technical corporation strategies will continue to benefit from a wide range of specialty training and it is our hope that new modalities of care in primary health care such as rehabilitation, podiatry, home-based care will be introduced in the not too distant future,” Royer stated.
Director of the Primary Health Care in Dominica, Dr. Martin Christmas, stated that the process of primary health care renewal, which was initiated by the Pan American Health Organization(PAHO), is aimed at “strengthening the country’s capacity and to implement coordinated, effective and sustainable strategy to tackle existing health problems.”
Wednesday’s consultation was divided into four groups.
Group 1 will identify specific gaps in current PHC (Primary health care) System, and make the necessary recommendations to address them.
Group 2 will explore the potential for intersectorial /interdisciplinary collaboration and make necessary recommendations.
Group 3 will identify existing inequities in light of the renewal of PHC concept, and make recommendations to address same.
And group 4 will identify specific areas requiring strengthening within the PHC system to embrace the renewal of the PHC concept.
The one day consultation is being facilitated by Jean Jacob.
