UWP advises caution in Ebola crisis

Linton said Dominica must be proactive in Ebola crisis
Linton said Dominica must be proactive in the Ebola crisis

Political Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, says in light of the growing national concern of the deadly Ebola virus and the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF), now a mere three weeks away, health officials should begin the process of ascertaining whether or not a major Nigerian act scheduled to perform poses any risk.

At least one Nigerian group and four acts from Congo are on the cards for the 18th edition of the WCMF.

“If this band is going to come here having been in an African country to which they were exposed to the virus, it must be possible at this stage to begin the process of ascertaining whether any of these band members are being exposed to risk factors that would make their arrival on our shores or present some difficulties when they arrive on our shores,” Linton said at a UWP press conference on Monday. “If the government’s ministry of health is unable to do that, the preferable thing to do would be to deny entry for that one band.”

However, he said, the UWP is not in favor a travel ban at this time, but would recommend proactive screening.

Back in early September officials from the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) informed that they were awaiting a policy statement from the government on the matter.

Linton stated that there is an absence of information and specific education on the disease and how the ministry plans on dealing with it.

“We cannot hide from it but we can prepare ourselves as effectively as we can, given the resources available to us and the best practices that have emerged in other countries for screenings, and overall coping,” he stated.

Linton stated Dominica must be proactive in its approach to the disease and learn from experiences such as recent surge of Chikungunya on the island.

“Ebola is not here yet but Chikungunya has been here,” he stated. “And when we look back on how we dealt with it, the record will show that we were not sufficiently proactive, nor were we effective in aligning necessary resources and to a proper strategy for coping, which is what we need to do with this Ebola virus.”

He said part of UWP’s health plan is to make Dominica the healthiest place to be. This forms part of the party’s vision to make Dominica the “best place to live, the best place to work, the best place to enjoy life,” he said.

“We see an efficient health system has to be comprehensive, it has to be inclusive, it has to encompass the entire population of over 65,000 people, it needs to accommodate both types of medical care and services that is preventive with a higher degree of diligence towards the preventive aspect,” he noted.

Speaking on the Ebola threat, health authorities here say they are putting more measures in place to screen the disease although the risk of entry remains low.

Public health nurses were expected to be placed at the island’s ports of entry and other measures which are being put in place include the identification of isolation sites, among others.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever, is a severe, often fatal illness. Up to nine out of every 10 people with the infection, die. There are no licensed specific treatments or vaccine available for use in people or animals. The time between acquiring an infection and showing symptoms and signs varies from two to 21 days.

The virus is highly infectious and is spread by person-to-person transmission through direct contact with bodily fluids or secretions of infected persons including blood, sweat, urine or faeces.

Symptoms include fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, external bleeding and rash.

Thank God it is not the UWP who is the Government of Dominica. Those scare tactics is unbecoming of a leader. Let the people who we have entrusted with looking after our country do their job.

The Ministry of Health have the contacts and the information and will give us the information as they see necessary. Don’t go around trying to scare people.

Ebola seems to be more like the AIDS virus in the way it is said to spread from person to person. You must be in contact with an infected person who has the disease and via bodily fluids etc. It is different than Chikungunya, that is spread by mosquitoes.

It is a very serious disease but we should not get our people in a panic that is not as yet necessary and hopefully never will.

Trying to see if by coming forward with a press conference on Ebola will make us forget the most recent interview, think again, We will listen to the Minister of Health, the Ministry of Health. the doctors and nurses and other health practitioners speaking on behalf of the Ministry and the Government for the information we need.

Coming forward with that press conference is like coming forward with scare tactics, like young people asking for guns, our women are prostitutes, our elderly are greedy, Ministers are rapists all the same thing in my opinion. and very irresponsible.

Times like these the Opposition should take it cue from the government and be responsible enough even seem to with one voice; for the People.

I can sense fear, ignorance, concern and misinformation. Although we have to be cautious and prepared for any emergency, there is no need to panic. Ebola cannot be compared to chikungunya. This is pure ignorance and fear mongering. It is easier to contract Chikungunya because it is transmitted by mosquitoes. Ebola is transmitted by direct contact with the body fluids of an individual exhibiting the symptoms.

Nigeria has more than 175 000 000 (one hundred seventy five million) people. There were less than 2 dozen Ebola cases. The spread was quickly contained. Nigeria, being one of the most developed in Africa, knows how to do this. They screen incoming and outgoing passengers. It is fear-mongering to ask the authorities to deny entry to the Nigerian band. What reason does Mr. Linton have to accuse the musicians of being “exposed to the virus”? It’s like accusing every Dominican in Texas of being “exposed to the virus”. This is irrational and I sense a bit of prejudice towards our African brothers from some of the ignorant comments I’ve read.

Some comments are of the perception that one case of Ebola in Dominica means a catastrophic wipe out of the population. Ebola is not airborne and there is no likelihood of a rapid spread even if one case is diagnosed in DA. Isolation/quarantine of any traveler displaying the symptom is the key to containment. The Ebola virus has been around for a long time. The poor African folks who lack medical care in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, are least likely to travel. The Duncan guy in Texas had already been in the US. The Texas authorities gave him antibiotics and sent him home. His family was kept in a contaminated house for several days. That’s how the disease is likely to affect his family; not by breathing the same air but by being in contact with the body fluids of the sick person.

Stop the fear-mongering and let’s live our life. Caution- yes!! Fear and prejudice- no!! The world will never forgive us if we are the first to deny entry/ban our African brothers and sisters. One day we will be repaid in kind. Remember that!! Those who reacted negatively towards our Haitian brothers are the same ones displaying their ignorance and prejudice towards our Nigerian brothers and sisters.

If push comes to shove. Cuba, PAHO, UN, US, EU, (especially France, re: Guadeloupe/Martinique) will come to our aid. One case or even two will not be the end of Dominica as long as we contain it. As was rightly said by a previous comment, malaria kills more than half a million Africans each year and it is spread by the anopheles mosquito. Malaria and chikungunya are more likely to spread than Ebola. The Nigerian musicians are likely to be in better health conditions than most Dominicans. Stop the sabotage of the WCMF disguised as concern!! Stop the hate and fear-mongering.

Asking the authorities to deny entry to the Nigerian band puts the UWP in the same bracket as the right wing Republicans who are using the misfortune of Africans to take down Obama. They are asking for cancellation of all flights from West Africa. It’s a shame and a sham by those who always wanted to restrict entry of Blacks into the US. Please don’t make that same mistake; we are better than that. Being on the wrong side of science and history is no way to show love and concern for the welfare of fellow Dominicans. It may be a good vote catching strategy to prey on the fear and ignorance of our people but history will be very unkind to us.

do you have own brains or FOX news thinks for you? Ebola has nothing to do with your skin color or language or sex…Ebola doesn’t care if you are black, white or green…all countries should impose ban on any movement to and out of infected areas/countries and send massive medical aid and health workers, what else you can do?

Recent Research has shown lab animals that were not in contact with each contracted the virus….it is believe that the virus found its way in suspended particles, that was inhaled by the animals http://healthmap.org/site/diseasedaily/article/pigs-monkeys-ebola-goes-airborne-112112

…….this means just being in the same room with someone showing signs of the virus puts a person as risk……you put it as something so simple but one thing you have failed to address is whether the health department and medical teams here in Dominica are equip to handle a case. Look at the number of health personals who have died because of treating the infected. Because you are Nigerian doesn’t mean you are to take offense to us Dominican, who like the rest of the world are panicking and fearful. This is not a simple matter that we can simply “live our lives” ………WHO and other Health organisations are expressing concerns, Doctors without boarders have described the spread of the virus as “out of control”…….yet you call on us to “live our lives”…….NO, FOR NOW LET’S panic to ensure that the necessary is done to prevent what occurred in the USA…. A Mr Duncan brought the virus to the USA, exposing hundreds……he was in contact with doctors, family members, friends of family members who in turn were in contact with others!!!!

I agree with Mr Linton. Dominica cannot afford to have Ebola, that would wipe t the whole country. They can’t even take care of a stroke patient, that would be suicide and murder all together. Let th Nigerian stay in their country. There should be a mass demonstration against that. My opinion.

The virous is now in america and in spain, the african man who lives in america was in africa but the nurse from spain never went to africa neither has she travelled ,but she treated the priests that were sent to spain,,,the doctors suggest that she must have been contaminated while de-gowning or removing he protection gown,,this shows how quickly this virous can be contagious,,,50 other people who were in contact with this nurse are in quarantine to find out whether the desease was trasmitted to them….the african man is hospitalized but there is no medicin like the medicin that was used to treat the two other american citizens because this medicin was made for testing…what is the gov’t or rather the prime minister waiting for to stop the festival…we have some sick wicked people leading dominica ..it is time to wake up ,here in europe the gov’ts are taking more serious measures ,,,

      interesting remark:
Peter Piot, 65, a virologist from Belgium, began his career as a Ph.D. candidate in a university laboratory in Antwerp. After traveling to Africa to help track down the Ebola virus he became a hospital doctor and, later, director of the United Nations AIDS program.

Today Mr Piot gave the interview for Die Spiegel (German Magazine): http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/interview-with-peter-piot-discoverer-of-the-ebola-virus-a-993111-2.html

SPIEGEL: For the first time in its history, the virus also reached metropolises like Monrovia and Freetown. Is that the worst thing that can happen?

Piot: In large cities — particularly in chaotic slums — it is virtually impossible to find those who had contact with patients, no matter how great the effort. That is why I am so worried about Nigeria as well. The country is home to mega-cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt and if the Ebola virus lodges there and begins to spread, it would be an unimaginable catastrophe.

In total agreement with Mr Linton. It should not be about money. The Government will end up spending far more should this disease touch Dominica, than the pittance made by allowing this band to play.

If the PM ‘cares’ about his people then this band should be prevented entry.

When this Jamaican artist who it’s alleged performs Satanic rituals in his music had to perform in Dominica, the Pastors and government came together and deported him. Now, the threat was not Ebola, it was as mentioned above. My concern is the reactionary moves to catch a vote attitude of a government that is truly disorganized, I mean if anything is evident of that is the opposition setting the agenda for what to be done. problem is not in Nigerian band…problem is that Ebola becomes pandemic and it spreads quickly. This chart shows exponential growth: http://healthintelligence.drupalgardens.com/content/predicting-number-cases-ebola-virus-disease-outbreak-countries-widespread-and-intense
Really bad news is that West African countries have very unreliable statistics and there are reasons to believe that many cases go unreported. From utterly layman’s perspective the perfect storm starts once Ghana and Nigeria starts to get new Ebola cases as both Nigeria and Ghana are the most economically important countries in West Africa/Africa and thus largest regional and international hubs.
I’m not healthcare practitioner but I sincerely believe that Europe and North America manage to cope with the crisis and put adequate measures in place. European countries and North America do have highly trained medical stuff, crisis response units, medical resources (medical tents, equipment, logistics etc) as well as military forces to maintain civil order in case of mass casualties. Plus sanitary and hygienic standards are much higher.
I think whats happening in Africa is great tragedy and UN were obliged to react and send medical equipment in West Africa at large scale months ago…
In case Ebola reaches the Caribbean and especially countries like Dominica then its going to be an armageddon and I wonder then how quickly rudimentary healthcare collapses and police force disintegrates and everybody will be on their own…

Smart move Mr. Duncan because it seems like the American Authorities are not willing to make the test medications available to people of COLOR. They refer to it as a “Test Vaccine” but every white American who has contracted the disease has been wrapped in plastic bags, transported to America and recovered in record time from the testing. The single “BLACK” and I reapeat “BLACK” individual with the disease in America, namely Mr. Duncan in Texas, has not been provided with any medication to counter the disease and his condition has since deteriorated resilting in a grim prognosis for him. Irrespective of how and where he contracted Ebola, it would be reasonable to expect that he receive the same treatment as all of the caucasions who have recovered from the disease. Can you imagine what would happen in DA if that disease was allowed to spread. We might as well wipe our lovely island from the map. I am not asking for paranoia but I am with you Mr. Duncan. Whose faults is it that the PM is always missing in action and does not address the pertinent issues that confront the state. This is what leadership is all about..

Whoever wrote this takes the prize for ignorant idiot of the year. the guy is the leader of the opposition stating a concern he has for his country and this moron talking about stay out of it. As a Dominican citizen it is his right and the right off every Dominican you raise concern about whats going on in his country. yet this moron calls it ego. This right here is a perfect example as to you this country and their leaders cant give any one a fear answer as to whats steps are being taken god forbid during this our busiest travel time to prevent this from getting here. cause in this country we live and breath party colors that we even willing to put that before our own safety.

We have yet to be told on a serious level whats being done.. all we hear is nurses at port and a site being considered. Creole festival is weeks away. instead of you bashing a man that raise serious concern. Maybe you should ask the so called Commander and chief whats being done to protect you.

Could not agree more with taking a proactive approach. Last thing we want is an outbreak with people beginning to point fingers saying we should have done this and that, by that time, it is to late.

don’t insult my intelligence …malaria doesn’t have such high mortality rate as well as malaria is specific only certain climate zones…its idiotic to compare malaria vs ebola

Prime Minister Linton is right, the ebola is spreading quickly, a spanish nurse just tested positive for ebola, Thomas Duncan is dead in the us, and it is spread to DC, Utah, also in Venezuela (http://www.latinpost.com/articles/21499/20140915/venezuela-virus-2014-mysterious-disease-reportedly-infects-aragua-area-governor.htm) . NIH doctor schools Elisabeth Hasselbeck after she asks him to ‘seal the borders, it is the only way to safeguard Dominicans, once it hit the ministers will be ok, but the rest of us doomed.

In my opinion we in Dominica are not ready for such an epidemic. What I feel would really help is if they organize a way for these bands to stop in the US for atleast a week before they arrive to Dominica. That way the individuals can get a complete health check and be monitored for any symptoms before entering the Caribbean.
Lord I ask for your protection of my people at this time

This guy from Marigot is really terrific. A breath of fresh air. No wonder the animal show, the kamala show, the Krazy Ghost show and Aaron commentaries on the new chronicle are all obsessed with him. The whole world is running scared, very concerned about the deadly Ebola virus and it has to take the alleged school drop out named Lennox Linton to bring the country to full awareness as to how to prepare and fight this deadly disease. Now he has spoken, Skeritt and the band followers will have their say. Thank you Jesus, Mr. Linton, you could not have arrived at a better time to save this beautiful country from peril.

I would like to know what is wrong with the Dominica festival people. our population is so small why are they bringing Africans here. why expose our small island to that deadly disease? Are you all so engulfed in making money that you would put our entire nation at risk? leave the Africans in Africa. prevention is better than cure. Dominicans are you going to pay over $300.00 just to put your life , your children and your nation at risk. we say boycut Creole festival if the Africans are coming.

  52. My View
    October 6, 2014

Do we have a Minister of Health….This silence on the Ebola threat during the WCMF is deafening. What precautionary measures are the authorities taking? This is serious business. DOMINICA’S POPULATION IS LESS THAN 70,000. We would be totally wiped out in a few years.

    October 6, 2014

I think they should deny them entry or inform them that due to the ebola crisis and they coming from a country that is exposed to ebola we cannot allow them in until there is a cure for ebola. We must protect our people. People first money last. Money don’t make people, people make money. Protect our people.

Great effort in stimulating much needed dialogue amongst our health sector and the general public. Let’s hope it does not evolve into a political battle but that the powers that be, edify the public with competent information.
I listen to BBC daily and the talk of ebola circulates almost every 3hrs. We don’t necessarily need to do that but out of respect and love for our meagre population, keep us posted at least once a week.

    Bless

I like that, I really really like that approach Mr. Linton. I have always said that Team Dominica (UWP) continues to lead while the government is relegated to follow hence another reason why Change Is A Must!

Let’s put another twist to this discussion:- Wadix(Leroy Charles)and the rest of the WCMF …could you all please inform/educate us as to the implications, if these African bands’ contracts were terminated at this late stage, due to this Ebola crisis/pandemic? Would there be a fine to pay them? We need some level of transperancy as to the terms of these contracts please.
