VOSH to provide eye care to less fortunate January 14 to 17

The Rotary Club of Dominica, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, once again welcomed another VOSH Team to begin the 19th annual VOSH Mission from January 14th to 17th, 2013.

VOSH – Volunteer Optometry Services for Humanity, a non governmental, non sectarian, apolitical organization, is dedicated to the provision of eye and vision care services for those who are below the poverty level and without access to local eye care.

The 31 VOSH volunteers will be providing eye care services to La Plaine on Monday January 14th, Castle Bruce and Salybia on Tuesday January 15th, Mahaut and Pointe Mitchel on January 16th and Goodwill on January 17th.

The VOSH Mission will be under the management of Dr. Dan Wrubel who received a meritorious service award during the 2012 Independence celebrations.  According to Rotary President, Marvlyn Birmingham, the award will be given to Dr. Wrubel at some point during his visit since he was not able to come to Dominica during Independence to receive it on behalf of the team.

Birmingham added that one major difficulty experienced every year is the confusion caused by people seeking attention without first receiving tickets from the health centers.

“Tickets are usually distributed by the health centers prior to mission and some people who do not receive tickets come to the clinics and cause confusion to get served before those who have tickets,” she said.

She therefore urged the public to be considerate and not disrupt the easy flow of people in the clinic. “We ask the persons who did not receive tickets to please stand aside and let the doctors deal with those who have tickets and then if there is still time they will deal with those who do not have tickets,” she urged.

The president of Dominica, Eluid Williams, is expected to visit the VOSH clinic on Thursday at the Goodwill Parish Hall.
