VOSH wraps up mission in Dominica

The 19th annual VOSH Mission, which provides eyecare to the less fortunate, entered its last day on Thursday morning at the Goodwill Parish Hall.

The mission began on Monday, January 14 and assistant coordinator of the mission, Rotarian Grayson Steadman Jr., said the doctors intend to see over 100 patients as it wraps up.

Volunteer Optometry Services for Humanity (VOSH) is a non-governmental, non-sectarian, apolitical organization, dedicated to the provision of eye and vision care services especially for those who are below the poverty level and without access to local eye care.

According to Steadman about 1,500 people are treated every year when the mission visits Dominica.

VOSH team leader, Dr Dan Wrubel revealed that the main purpose for the team returning to the island each year is the service they provide to the people, especially to those in need of such care.

“When I heard about Rotary and service, I think that’s the reason we get up in the morning, we should be doing service ….that’s our purpose,” he said.

Wrubel pointed out that the doctors visited the Salybia clinic for the first time and described his experience there as ‘fantastic.’ “The people there were very friendly,” he noted.

He commended the nurses in the out districts for preparing the clinics and the clients which, he said, contribute to the easy flow of the mission.

President Eluid Williams and his wife also visited the mission on Thursday.

The President met with Rotary President Marvlyn Birmingham, team Leader Dan Wrubel and other members of the VOSH 2013 team, Rotary club of Dominica and Rotaract Club of Roseau volunteers.

As a first time member of the VOSH team, I must say that it has been a pleasure to be a part of such an experience. It is I who should give thanks to the people of Dominica for allowing an experience which has ever changed my life though their kindness, love, appreciation and acceptance. Anyone interested in learning more about my experience on the island can do so by searching for the page “Jason Vallad ABOM- Dominica Mission Trip” on Facebook. I have ever been touched by your people and will look forward to returning for years to come.

Thanks to the VOSH team and the Rotarians for such great service, one that we would be holding an appointment from our local eye specialist for almost an entire year before we can be seen. question, what part did the President and his wife played in getting VOSH here?

Deepest thanks VOSH and Rotarians for your excellent service. We have special memories of helping Rev Livingston Malcolm and the Methodist Church organize one of the first VOSH trips to Dominica back in the mid-1980s, led by Dr. Paul and Judy Kropf. May we each be inspired to acts of service to those God brings into our life daily. Sometimes, just a genuine smile or greeting is sufficient.
