We are approaching the healthcare system from different fronts – PM Skerrit

PM Skerrit at a function in Canada on the weekend

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit provided a comprehensive update on the country’s healthcare strategy while speaking at a town hall meeting in Canada on Sunday.

He explained that the wheels for advancing the health care system have long been in motion, and highlighted that the new National Hospital (which is under construction) is just a part of the entire undertaking.

“This government has been dedicated to acquiring advanced medical equipment and ensuring that we have more specialist doctors in our country, such as the many Dominican doctors who we sent on several scholarships to various universities to obtain specialised training to be able to provide better care to our citizens,” he said.

In outlining the vision for the hospital, the prime minister noted that when complete, it will be “a modern hospital, not only with the physical structure, but also with the services provided there.”

After the passage of Hurricane Maria, the Government of Dominica, in collaboration with the Government of the Peoples Republic of China, revised and modified the designs of the hospital to ensure that damage will be minimal in the event of another hurricane.

Prime Minister Skerrit revealed that the government of Mexico released the funds to the United Nations agency in charge of designing and constructing the Marigot hospital facility, which will significantly expedite access to healthcare in northern Dominica.

When complete, the facility is going to house a wide range of x-ray and specialised diagnostic equipment to lessen the dependence on seeking medical care in Roseau.

With the new SMART health centre in La Plaine nearing completion, the prime minister lauded the facility for setting a new benchmark for climate resilient construction in Dominica.

“[The La Plaine health centre] possesses a number of climate resilient elements,” he said, explaining that “the centre is equipped with renewable energy systems, independent sources of water and sufficient storage and capacity to carry out its daily functions normally, in the event of a storm,” he stated.

Believing Skerrit and his promises is believing in fairy godmothers. Eighteen years is a long time for anything. If a government can’t get anything right in eighteen years, when again? It’s an existential struggle to stay sane and healthy in today’s Dominica.

Skerrit what you have tried to pontificate in Canada is nothing new as we have been articulating the required resources that is needed for effective medical care in Domininca. A concrete is not a hospital, a nice three bedroom house is not a family. What’s makes a hospital and family home operational is that it has the decent professionals and parents who are good people to function these roles. You behave like this spontaneous little boy who receive toys and play with all day long. That behaviour is for a child and not for you as this grown, appears to be immature man. You have no long term plan, let alone a short term plan, which we in our respective ministries wish to perform without interference and with a lack of consultation and preparedness. Skerrit, you have failed us, you are immature and you continue to play with your political tools as if you never had toys to play with. Grow up Skerrit or get out of this government that you have failed. After 18 years we are in deep…

Listen to that liar. We are close to elections and he promises all kind of things again. I just hope for the sake of our country that the citizen will tell him on election day what they think of him. Dominica can’t live any longer on empty promises, incompetence and the draining of it’s already scarce resources.

Roosevelt, once again I am compelled to call you a liar! There is no new national hospital under construction any place in Dominica. Stop lying for a moment and tell the truth! You brought Chines to Dominica to do additions to the old Princes Margret Hospital, on which work has long halted. The additions started more than two years ago, and stopped!

Last week you said Chines are coming to Dominica to hold talks about that same hospital; have you forgotten boy; you are a liar.

What have you done with the money given to you to build a new hospital in Marigot by the Mexican government, and people of Mexico to replace the one  you deliberately allowed termites, roaches, and rodents to destroy simply to deprive  Marigot and Wesley people medical treatment.

Prime Minister Sir, let us not turn back to negative vibes, like Lot’s wife who turned back and immediately became a pillar of salt.

Let continue to look forward and upwards, knowing that we have a Divine force that is driving us, He is God Almighty of Love and Holiness; what He is in control of, through His obedient and humble servant cannot fail.

Let us keep our hope in the days to come when we will no longer be sending our critically sick ones to another country for health care, but those countries will be sending their same to our hospitals

What God has planned no one can destroy, let us continue to maintain the hope of the plans which He puts our mind–our Dominica is rising and will continue to rise by His authority and His alone.
