Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux has warned that it is possible cases of the dreaded mosquito-borne Zika Virus might increase in Dominica.
At the same time, a top health official has told women to avoid getting pregnant until the country is free from the virus.
“We are hoping that we might not have any further cases of the Zika Virus,” Darroux said on Focus on Government and Development radio show. “It is possible, but we feel that we can defeat the Zika Virus if we all do what we have to do.”
According to him, the Health Ministry has put certain measures in place to help combat the virus.
“All our surveillance systems are on red alert, we are in red mode and the Doctors and nurses especially at the district level, at the community level have been briefed as to the as to the certain protocols, procedures to anyone with rash, fevers, etc, where they cannot find any cause and to ensure that they take the samples and send the samples across as quickly as possible to Trinidad for testing,” he noted.
Meantime District Medical Officer for the Roseau Health District, Dr. Leonora Drigo has advised women of childbearing age to avoid getting pregnant until the country is free from the Zika Virus.
The virus has been linked to cases of microcephaly, 4,000 in Brazil alone since October 2015, in which babies are born with underdeveloped brains and small heads.
“Essentially we are telling all persons of child-bearing age to please protect yourselves and avoid getting pregnant during that period,” she said.
She advised also that women who are already pregnant should visit their gynaecologist as soon as possible since there are scans that need to be done.
“You cannot advocate for abortions because life is precious, we did not give it to ourselves,” she noted. “But again we can advocate for you protecting yourselves and everything else that goes along with it, the main thing being cleaning up your environment.”
One case of the Zika Virus was confirmed in Dominica last week, however, health authorities said there is no need for alarm.

The public needs to understand that doctors working in the public sector are expected to basically share the ministry of
Health opinion on matters and not necessarily their own beliefs. I’m sure if you were to ask Dr Drigo privately she would be sharing a different message. That being said she makes a very valid point. With so much controversy surrounding the Zika virus and it’s complications it is better to be safe than sorry. Wrap it up until the all clear is given…simple.
I wonder if the Health Authorities; physicians and “advisors” have been guided by PAHO recommendations. I have been reading enough and i haven’t find any prestigious health provider saying “avoid to be pregnant” “use condoms” etc.
Instead, recommendations for early prenatal cases to prevent microcephaly and other birth defects are:
avoid drugs, alcohol, infections, other toxins and radiation. Environmental measures like reduce mosquitos at home and in the workplace and also personal measures to prevent mosquito bites. Stop family planning is a non sense because now is Zika what about tomorrow if we don’t prevent or avoid causes of fetal brain abnormality such as drugs, alcohol etc
They may not have stated it out-rightly but it has been stated that pregnant women unborn babies are affected as you have previously read in another article.

If you want to scare people into agreeing to allow you to genetically modify mosquitoes and release them into their environment, what do you do? You travel to their country, inject someone with the Zika Virus. When they go to the hospital guess what Dominica has Zika Virus. Fear and propaganda (misinformation, half- truths). These people are itching to spread genetically modified mosquitoes.
When will we stop relying on other countries Hospital facilities?
Health Officials, who are you referring to, advising to avoid pregnancy? Do they also include minors? I would think these should refrain from sexual relationships.

I am not convinced that it is the virus that is causing the microcephaly however I understand that the WHO and our local Doctors are playing safe.
It seems more likely that the causative agent is the Pyriproxyfen used in the areas of Brazil that have high levels of mosquitos and hence high levels of Zika. I understand that other Latin American countries with high Zika Incidence have not had the worrying spike of microcephaly.
The rate of microcephaly in the US is as many as 12 per 10,000 live births. Brazil is usually 0.5 per 10,000 births. It may simply be that they have started using the American larvacide!.
All i can say is when they try to introduce the vaccine DO NOT TAKE IT!!..
Thank you Dr Drigo, at least someone is doing their work . Whether the virus is causing microcephaly directly or not but there is an affiliation so prevention is better than cure. Ladies take heed, it is better you put off a pregnancy for now than having a sick child all your life. I was so disappointed in the MinOf Health who is a medical doctor himself when he said on National radio he cannot tell women to avoid pregnancy because we have a small population and it has not been proved that the virus causes microcephaly.

Did you read the entire article, my dear? Did you come across the part which read “While there is no solid proof yet that the larvicide causes microcephaly…”? There are no solid facts confirming which of the two actually causes the birth defect.
Maybe both cause, maybe none of them cause it. my point is why is the ministry so behind in the info they present? why is the ministry acting like it can only report second or third hand information?
It doesn’t mean your information is accurate. These conclusions can only be made backed up by scientific research. You’d be surprised that not everything you read on the internet is true. Furthermore I will put my confidence in a report from WHO rather than some techtimes page.
I too have my suspicions about this larvicide that was put into the water, but there is also the issue of the vaccine which was made mandatory. Those are two strong points that make us wonder. But in the absence of the research we have to take precaution.

Where does the government fit in this? Save and help them for what? Where are their parents, especially their mothers? What role do they play in their children’s life? The PM was not there when they were conceived, born and being brought up.
Some of you cannot leave the PM alone and not place him in a situation where he does not belong and has no jurisdiction over.
