Special Advisor to former Prime Minister, Edison James, has died.

Edward Alexander died on Tuesday morning in St. Lucia where he had gone to seek medical attention.

Reports indicate he had been ailing for some time.

During his life time, Alexander wore many hats, serving as Press Advisor to Edison James and Ambassador to Haiti during the United Workers Party administration.

He has served as a telegraphist, a Minister of Religion, a Diplomat, a Broadcaster and a Journalist.

Alexander was actively involved in sports and sports administration, serving as executive member of the Dominica Amateur Sports Association, which at that time governed sporting activities on the island, as well as in other social and youth affairs.

He was born in Colihaut and received his early education at the Colihaut Government School and at the Dominica Grammar School. He later graduated from the Cable and Wireless Training School in Barbados as a telegraphist.

He studied Philosophy and Theology at L’Ecole Superieure de Theologie in Vendee, France and the Seminary of St. John Vianney in Trinidad.

He did further studies in Ottawa, Canada at St. Paul’s University, the University of Ottawa and Carleton University earning at these three institutions in turn the Certificate in Social Communications and Animation, the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Communications and the Master of Journalism degree.

He did a post graduate certificate course in Diplomatic Studies at Oxford University, earning a distinction in Diplomatic Practice.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia.

He was a wonderful priest whilst still in the priesthood, and a very special man. It is really frightening about this lack of medical facilities in Dominica which may cause someone to go to St Lucia which is not much better. When you are ready to retire such thoughts have to be taken into consideration when thinking of Dominica. Rest in peace dear man!

Condolences to the family of a very good man. May his soul rest in peace. On a more serious note does it bother us Dominicans that we have to keep going to other Caribbean islands for most health issues? With all the money our government sending when will it give us a suitable health system. Soon we will be going to other Caribbean islands for bandages and Mercurochrome!

I heard of his passing the very morning that it occurred; was sorry to hear about it.
My heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Patsy. You were married for many years. I visualize how much you will miss him. Take heart. May God cover you with his mantle of love and consolation.
Eternal rest grant unto the soul of Edward, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen!

I first met father Alexander as a Priest when he came to the Dominica Grammar School to teach us Religious Education. Later in life we contested the 1995 General Elections together, although he did not win the Colihaut constituency for the UWP, we served faithfully together in government from 1995 to 2000.He was a very intelligent hard working and dedicated gentleman. He was very humorous and a great humanitarian.Alex as he was affectionately called will be greatly missed. My prayers and profound sympathies are extended to his loving wife Patsy and his brothers, sisters and his entire family. May he rest in the eternal peace of his heavenly Father.

Actually. I served as an Altar Boy in the Roseau Catholic Church when Father Alexander was a priest. He was always very outspoken and felt that priest should be allowed to married. I always saw him as a ladies man. May his soul rest in peace.

What is your idea? There are numerous married couples who separated and divorced. Do you think that marriage is in the answer?
Our Lord said, “You cannot serve God…and other matters.” Just being fair and realistic.

Eddy say on news he worked for UWP,Haitians but nothing was said about what he did for Dominica.
It was so nice when EDDO say he worked with the OAS as part of election monitoring team. I listen to the UWP leader[ a man who I have some limited Political respect for he is a greatman )but I wanted him to say whether he accepted the report of the OAS on Elections Missions in the Caribbean and elsewhere when his hand selected Ambassador Alexander was working with the OAS.
WE are a democratic country and I have my entitlement.
I had no idea who you were but let me say thanks.

To Jaso….please read the article on Edward Alexanders death carefully prior to posting unfounded comments. Nowhere in the article does it make mention of Edward being a priest during Pope Francis’s pontificate. Yes, Edward was ordained a priest but found that the ministry was not his calling. Until his untimely death however, he remained unwavering in his love for God. May his soul rest in peace and to the members of his entire family, I extend my sincere condolences.

you simply leave the priesthood …

    • Justice and Truth
      May 29, 2013

You have a right to know. Actually you should have asked a priest. Those of us who are older know that he renounced his priestly vows. He was not forced out. Nevertheless, as contained in Holy Scripture – Hebrews 7:17: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
Once a priest always a priest to eternity. The same applies for baptized Catholics. Those who renounced their Catholic faith are not aware of that.
When the priest said: “I baptize you in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, God blest them from above and sealed their baptism as Catholics to eternity. No one on this earth has the authority and mandate to annul this baptism. St. Paul said: “There is one baptism.”
As heard on US Catholic Radio, “It is a sin to leave the Catholic Church.” Why? Because Our Lord Jesus Christ established The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Faith when He said to Peter, “Thou art Peter and upon this Rock I will build My Church…”
They did not practice the faith as they should have; did not cultivate their faith, grow in faith, spirituality and knowledge of same. It was also a cause of ungodly lifestyle. This is why it was so easy to be falsely indoctrinated and renounce this faith. Little do some people know. If only they would have given it a thought and today, give it a thought and meditate on it in prayer instead of renouncing their faith. God would show them the truth and give them a true answer.

he was a preist. My grandmother gave us the story before she died. Everywhere he was sent the girl followed him and he eventually married her. He did the right thing. Despite this I understood he was a very nice and polite man. May His Soul rest in peace!!!

I knew about it. Love finds a way on earth. Yes! He was. When he resided in Ottawa and I resided in Montreal, that Saturday evening, I had a party at my place. He visited Montreal at that time and attended the party. He was welcome. We had a good chat. I can say he was a nice, friendly and polite person.
It may be that some men are not meant to be priests. Some joined the priesthood assuming that they would remain a priest forever. You know, temptations can set in, Satan’s temptation.
We Catholics are to pray for the Church (we are the Church), for priests, Bishops and for the Pope. Only tonight I discussed this with someone. How many Catholics have done that in the past to today? Therefore, when matters go wrong in the Church, Catholics must not (only) blame the priests but blame themselves for their faithlessness by not praying for them. God took note then and He is taking note today of how well we serve him, worship and how fervent we are. And that is the truth of the matter.

Who knows what may have happened if he got treatment in Dominica? You cannot see the future and you cannot foretell the future.

  26. May 28, 2013

Hello. Rest in Peace Mr Alexander and Condolence to your family. Also thanks for everything you did for our Country.

    • May 28, 2013

Hello. I separate this comment from my other one because I didn’t want to divert from the topic or seems disrespectful to the Alexander family in their trying times . The article said he went to St Lucia for medical treatment which left me a little confused because I can’t believe that they have a much better medical system than us. Now I can understand if he went to Canada, America or England for medical treatment which could not be that serious because he went to St Lucia. Also they didn’t tell us what treatment he received there which he couldn’t get in Dominica. I am truly concerned because that would mean we need to make major improvements in our health care system.

      • thinkinman
        May 28, 2013

Um…if our Minister of Health himself has to be rushed out of the country for a stroke..what does that tell you? Not even the cook himself eating the food

      • Justice and Truth
        May 29, 2013

Someone informed me about the treatment but I will not divulge it. The treatment he got is a personal matter. If his wife wants to divulge it, she has the preference and prerogative.
Consider if he had gone to Guadeloupe, Martinique or Barbados, what would you have stated?

      • May 31, 2013

        Thinkinman

Hello. We were told that the Minister of Health suffered a Stroke which is a major medical incident even if it is a minor stroke. I am just concern for our Health System since Mr Alexander received treatment in St Lucia which he couldn’t receive in Dominica.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends. He was a good man. He was one of those, together with the late Romanus Bannis, who piloted the Cuban Scholarship Medical program in sending the largest number of students to Cuba to study medicine in 1996. I was part of that team. May your soul rest in peace !

    • Cabral D
      May 29, 2013

you must get your facts correct. The Cuban Scholarship was pioneered by the DLP under the leaderships of the late Douglas Brothers. I hate it when persons who ought to know better attempt to take the wind from the sail of those who actually open the way for hundreds of young persons to attain education education in Cuba. This was done even while the DLP was in opposition and Father Alexander was no where near when the DLP and the Douglas Brothers worked so very hard for this programe. Some people deliberately forget and are just Damn maliciously bias.
The UWP operatives must stop its propaganda machinery and focus on people’s development. Their approach must be changed else they will remain in the stomach of the opposition for a very long while.
Doctor you are dead wrong and you know this. Get your facts right. Sad that some of us are so ungrateful.

        May 29, 2013

I hate to call you a foolish person. What has Dominican Law have to do with the Catholic Church and priests?
You should know that in Dominica, there is one marriage, wherever nationals wish to get married.
They get a license for marriage because their marriage has to be recorded in the State’s records and for statistical purposes. This is as far as it goes. I guess you know nothing about that. Think and utilize your common sense.
