Child airlifted to US for medical attention

The child was airlifted out of Dominica last weekend

A two-year-old child, who received 50 percent burn to his body over two weeks ago, was airlifted out of Dominica over the weekend to the United States for medical treatment.

He was accompanied by his mother, Nasha Carbon from Woodford Hill and is now at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston, USA.

A letter from Mary Jo Pedulla, MS, RN, NE-BC, Director of Patient Care Services and Nurse Executive at Shriners Hospital, said the hospital will provide medical care specifically related to the injury.

“This includes surgical procedures, wound care, critical care nursing and rehabilitation. It is difficult to accurately predict the length of time in America. This varies based on medical and surgical recommendations but can range from 1-5 months. Shriners Hospitals for Children – Boston will assist with cost of food, lodging and incidentals for one parent/legal guardian during the acute phase of care. This does not include any medical or other expenses the parent/legal guardian may incur during the patient’s hospital stay. Shriners Hospitals for Children – Boston provides care in a family-centered environment regardless of the patient’s ability to pay,” Pedulla stated.

Speaking to reporters, his mother expressed gratitude to all those who assisted her and the child.

“I want to say thanks to Matt Peltier, Mervin “Ninja” Henderson, Sandra Guiste nurses at the hospital and doctors, my family and friends and all those who assisted me in one way or the other,” she said.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.

Kudos to Matt Peltier, Dr. Dangleben, and all persons who put their foot forward. I am sorry the family of the burnt 15 year old did not accept the help for her. Sad.

I don’t know where they get that information. You never have to pay for care food or lodging at Shriners. That’s one of their mission statement. Smh

Faceup, How do you know that there is a charge at Shriners. Please do your research before you write anything.

@Faceup , this is NOT YOUR DAMN BUSINESS where the child gets medical help. Some of all you Dominicans too copaweyzon. Just because the child is not ‘who know who’ child you trying to play like the child should not receive treatment from certain places. Sacwey copaweyzon. Wait for you to get yours and then you will decide where you want to go

So why did our own govt. health service not access this facility.? As you say it is right next doors and treatment could have started earlier. Martinique is also an associate member of Caricom if I’m not mistaken. Instead it took a private initiative to get this child proper care and that is the main thing after all. Thanks to all who made this possible.

Don’t know which planet you live on, but Martinique does not treat anyone for free. This is from years ago. If they don’t know how they getting their money, you can’t come!

Until June 2012, all care at Shriners Hospitals was provided without charge to patients and their families. At that time, because the size of their endowment had decreased due to losses in the stock market, Shriners Hospitals started billing patients’ insurance companies, but still offered free care to children without insurance and waives all out of pocket costs insurance does not cover.
I will hedge that this child will be covered fully.

What’s left unsaid is that the Shriners Hospitals are operated/created by Masons.
Next time someone is on this website blasting Masonry

The Knights Templers’ run the hospitals. There are 33 levels of Masons in the organization. Not all masons belong to the organization.

        Not true.
Shriners International owns & operates all the hospitals.
Not sure why you brought up the levels of Masonry but any Master Mason can join Shriners. Whereas, before, it was limited to those that completed a Scottish Rite or York Rite system

Yeah, brick layers (Masons) have done many good things – They also built my house.

This is what I’d like to know. And did the police or even welfare do an investigation into the cause of the burn?
