The right leg of former Prime Minister of Dominica Patrick Roland John was on late Monday evening, July 18, 2016, amputated at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

John is a diabetic and it is reported that the leg was seriously infected.

His wife Desiree John said, “the surgery was a success” and the ailing former Dominican leader is resting comfortable.

“From what I have been told by the doctor who performed the surgery, it was a success and he is resting. He is in high spirits and we are asking everyone to keep him in your prayers,” she said.

The 79-year-old John was re-admitted to the hospital almost a month ago with heart-related ailments. In January this year he was airlifted to Martinique for urgent medical attention and while there, surgery was performed on the leg.

John is a former national footballer, a former president of the Dominica Football Association (DFA) and former Prime Minister of Dominica.

As usual blame bad diets and Ault genes for diabetes. However, before jumping on that bandwagon, consider the influence of pesticides, vaccines, modified sugars,
sweeteners, antibiotics – all designed to negatively affect our health in the long term.

That’s sad that a good man loses his leg. If unfortunate things only happened to bad people for example an electrician in the north who does not like to pay that would be more acceptable

You can laugh as much as you want, but English is English no matter what the circumstances, and must be respected as a language. Ergo, the leg is a ‘former’ leg. Therefore, it should correctly be referred to as such.

The headline therefore in my view should have read:-

Doctors compromised with extreme prejudice the former leg of former PM of Dominica, Col., Dr. Patrick John. The PM is said to be recovering well and DNO staff and other well-wishers, send their best regards to Col. John for a speedy recovery”.

        Now, doesn’t that sound better???

we need a marshal law type driven program on our national health system targeting our way of life and change in lifestyles. Or else we will have a “one-legged nation”. Mr. of health and Prime minister take note. We wish Mr. John well in his recovery.

  8. I remember, as a child, a vibrant Mr. Patrick John becoming Prime Minister of Dominica.
Mr. John, Sir, you have the fortitude to maintain your lifestyle (a diet of legumes/beans, green leafy veggies, complex/whole grain carbs; much movement; and, quiet surrender to the Creator of our amazing bodies) in order to continue quality of health that is optimal.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with you and your family, as you beat this challenge, too.

  9. Just a two days ago, Darroux claimed that health care in Dominica is better than ten years ago. If Darroux is correct, I would like him to explain how come people lower extremities are still amputated because of diabetes!

Whereas there is no cure for diabetes at the moment, treatment are very effective, I see no reason in the twenty-first century why diabetes should lead to amputation in the country, where many times over the years Dominicans claim medical treatment in Dominica is better than the rest of the Caribbean. In Patrick’s case the only reason to cause that is if he knew he was hyperglycemic (diabetic) and ignore the symptoms, and did not sort treatment.

If he has medical issues with his heart, and that was the cause of his hospitalization in Martinique, with the developed event, I know he has been living with untreated diabetes for a very long time, it damaged his heart, and now caused the amputation.

This is a lesson to those misguided people who are in…

This is a lesson to those misguided people who are in Dominica talking nonsense about “let us beat this thing.” Beat what? If one is predisposed to diabetes, meaning it is hereditary, one is born with a damage gene, which is the cause of the disease; who can prevent themselves from getting the diseases?

As for the one who made the claim that diabetes is avoidable, I would like you to follow up your claim, and state to the audience how diabetes can be avoided; give a lecture on the disease let me find out if your claims are authentic. Diabetics can live for more than a hundred years, without amputation, and other organs failure, as long as they are regimental with their treatment.

Those of you who believe the nonsense that you can “beat this thing” continue to hold on to your stupid thoughts; in the final analysis all of you will suffer amputations, heart, and kidney failure, along with blindness; and there is no bush water the Rasta-men will tell you all is good…

    • Finally:

There is no bush water the Rasta-men will tell you all is good for diabetes, and if you drink it you will be cured, that will not help, as there are no plants yet found in Dominica that can cure diabetes the bush water drank with the hope of curing; such will only hasten your exist from this life!

And all who are prepared to give me thumbs down, you all will be wasting you time, while I am leaving right minuit to go across country on my summer vacation, So, maybe I will never see you thumbs down oui!

I drank bush water once and got a rash on my private parts for days. Also diarrhea which was not a pleasant experience especially as I lived in the countryside and had run out of toilet paper.

We Dominicans have let our diets run wild….thats whats killing us more than anything…all the wards in the hospital are full because of diabetes and high blood pressure. Large portion sizes, loads of starchy foods, imported foods with all sorts of chemicals, all our drinks are sugary and stored in plastics and tins which leak chemicals into them, and then our national dish is chicken and chips.

Some practices towards this end is in our hands.

You wish well but you had to add a few discouraging and depressing words which are uncalled for. Insensitive I would state.
Is this how you would talk to a relative/friend if they were in that situation? I am certain the doctors are doing all they can for him and he is also getting good medical care from the nurse.

Hold on to life and speedy recovery. May the good Lord see you safely through such a difficult experience. I am aware of your very prayerful nature and deep FAITH in GOD. Thanks for helping Dominica’s development in so many ways. Remembered you and Thomas Baptiste coming to my parents’ little wooden overcrowded shack in Roseau informing us about the plans you all had to build Bath Estate Housing ; where I now live. Thanks. GOD BLESS YOU.

Could you not settle for wishing him well? Sooner or later everyone will get ill if they do not die suddenly or in an accident. Some die young and others older.
One thing is certain, we will not live forever. As people age their bodies develop some sort of illness. Have you considered that not everyone has the same illness? Should it not surprise you? One has diabetes, another high blood pressure (some have both), others cancer, each a different form, and others, another type of ailment. I wonder if it can really be prevented. Think about that.
