Dominican Tina Alfred will be among eight exceptional young people from the Eastern Caribbean and from around the Commonwealth who will be honored by Her Majesty The Queen at a ceremony to be held at Buckingham Palace in London on June 23.

She will be presented with the Queen’s Young Leaders Award at the ceremony.

As the Commonwealth celebrates The Queen’s 90th birthday, this year’s Award winners, all aged between 18 and 29, are being recognised by The Queen for taking the lead in transforming the lives of others and making a lasting difference in their communities.

As a Queen’s Young Leaders, Alfred will join winners from Commonwealth countries from around the world in London for five days of high-level engagements, all designed to help them further their life-changing work.

Before receiving their Queen’s Young Leaders Award at Buckingham Palace, the winners will visit 10 Downing Street and the UK headquarters of global social networking company Twitter, and meet with senior executives at the BBC World Service. They will also meet the Commonwealth Secretary General, take part in workshops at the University of Cambridge, have meetings with UK business leaders, and visit projects that are changing the lives of vulnerable people in the UK.

Thousands of young people from all over the Commonwealth applied to be a Queen’s Young Leader and were selected through a competitive process.

“I am looking forward to Residential Week so I can learn new experiences and new Ideas and share my experiences and ideas with the most exceptional people from around the world. I am definitely looking forward to meeting such exceptional young people from around the world,” Alfred said.

In Dominica Alfred coordinates the victim support programme at Lifeline Ministries, working to support teenagers who have experienced gender-based violence. She helped to launch the Coalition for the Protection of Children and Youth and is a member of the Dominica National Council of Women. Alfred is also working with women’s groups on the island promoting the mandatory reporting of sexual offences and hopes to set up a 24-hour helpline for those seeking to escape violence and abuse. In 2015 she was awarded a scholarship to attend the University of the West Indies, where she produced a research project justifying the need for a Family Court in Dominica.

This year’s Award winners are working to support others, raise awareness and inspire change on a variety of issues including education, climate change, gender equality, mental health and improving the lives of people with disabilities.

The application process to become a 2017 Queen’s Young Leader opens on Friday 24 June 2016. The programme is looking for people aged between 18 and 29 who are dedicated to creating positive changes to the lives of people in the sub-region.

The others Leaders from the Caribbean are:
Regis Burton Antigua and Barbuda
Firhaana Bulbulia Barbados
Shamelle Rice Barbados
Ali Dowden Grenada
Trevis Belle St Kitts and Nevis
Tevin Shepherd St Lucia
Dillon Ollivierre St Vincent and the Grenadines

Congratulations on works well done, we the people of this country should give high recognition to people like Tina Alfred annually instead of having great people Tina Alfred caught up in “Psicological warfare?” Mental slavery!? This is an effort to keep the mental strings on our people.

If you remove “King” from his tittle he will surely be looked at as a dictator. Who voted for him?

We have to do more to give recognition to people of great deeds such as Tina Alfred. Congratulations! :)

  3. Congratulations Tina Alfred!

It is good to see a young person drawing attention to her country in a positive way.

To contribute to the well being of your community and country is one thing. But for it to come to the attention of the Queen is like WOW!

May you continue to make a difference.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.

Congratulations Tina. Please, don’t forget to take a small packet of salt with you to give to the Baroness for her to suck on and remind her of home.

Tina, I recall the previous article when you won the Queen’s Young Leaders award. I commented then.
I visualize your excitement as the time is drawing near to meet Queen Elizabeth II and her family including visiting others and the prestigious places. What a wonderful opportunity to meet them. You will obviously also meet and make new friends.
I know you will have a fabulous time and make the most of this golden opportunity. Take as many pictures as you possibly could.
I wish you a safe and enjoyable flight to the UK and from/back to Dominica.
    God-speed and God Bless!

You are a budhead and not a budman. The Queen is the head of the Commonwealth, of which we are members in case you have forgotten. Mr. Skerrit and Baroness Scotland have not.
