George will receive her award in London in June

Kellyn George, of Dominica, is among 60 young people from across the Commonwealth who has been recognized as exceptional leaders in their community.

These 60 young people will be the first ever to receive the prestigious “Queen’s Young Leaders Award.”

The Award, which will be presented in London by Queen Elizabeth II in June and is part of The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme, celebrates the achievements of young people who are taking the lead to transform the lives of others and make a lasting difference in their communities.

Three other young people from the Eastern Caribbean and Barbados will also be recognized.

According to organizers of the award, George was born with sickle cell anaemia and has endured many complications with her health. Her experiences motivated her to establish The Sickle Cell Cares Foundation. The organisation raises awareness of the disease and aims to help those who are affected to manage their healthcare as well as possible.

This year’s Award winners, aged between 18 and 29 are working to support others, raise awareness and inspire change on a variety of different issues including; education, climate change, gender equality, mental health and disability equality.

The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme is a new initiative established by The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust in partnership with Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society in recognition of The Queen’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth.

Over the next four years the Programme will support thousands of young people. In addition to the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards, the Programme will provide grants to support organisations in selected countries across the Commonwealth that work with young people to transform their lives.

An award presented by the Queen? Wow!

As a grandfather I know how proud your folks are of you. Nothing makes parents any happier than seeing their children excel.

You have a health challenge. But it does not have you! It could have been a stumbling block. But you have made it a stepping stone! By using it as an occasion to help thousands of other people you have shown the strength of the human spirit to rise above such things in life and even make them advantageous. Many will be encouraged by your example.

One can only stand in awe at the many accomplished young people in Dominica who are making their mark. This is the future of the nation.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

“sorted out” … I love that expression! If you don’t mind I will use it.

I think it implies the individual has good priorities and is well organized.

And yes, Kellyn George certainly does exemplify it!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. :-P International Evangelist.

Congratulations to you Kellyn. I’ve seen you grow to become who you are. Hats off to you. But be thankful for your parental support. You could not have become who you are without strong parents. It is wonderful to see that you are making a change in your world, by making people understand that what you are living with is not a problem, but a disease. A disease that you can live with and even lead with. Keep up the exceptional work and continue to be a leader in a positive direction.
