Dominican, Jean Joseph, has received the highest ranking award at the 17th Annual Woman of Great Esteem (WGE) Emerald Awards Ceremony which held on Saturday May 4th, 2013 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, New York.

The Woman of Great Esteem Emerald Award of Excellence is presented each year to an extraordinary woman whose exemplary life achievements have brought prominence amongst her peers, honor from her community and positive notoriety in her nation and world.

This award celebrates excellence and is a medium that empowers its awardees to ascend to their next level on the ladder of accomplishments and world recognition.  The honoree who receives this award exemplifies oneself through national or world recognition in a particular area.

Joseph received the award for her work in the field of Finance.

To date, this highest level of recognition, The WGE Emerald Award of Excellence has been awarded to recipients from Barbados, Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, South Africa and the United States of America.

In addition to the award, Jean also received a citation from Mayor of the City of New York, Michael R Bloomberg and two citations from The Council of the City of New York.

Joseph is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).  She is the founder of Joseph Tax and Consulting Services, LLC.  She has dedicated her life to providing professional accounting services to a wide array of individuals and corporations, as well as creating and supporting various organizations and activities that benefit the community and society.

Born and raised in Roseau, Dominica, Joseph is a true success story.  A graduate of the Convent High School and Dominica Teachers College, she taught at the St. Martin’s Vocational School for ten years.

After migrating to the United States in 1978, she attended Iowa State University and then Pace University where she graduated with a BS in accounting, eventually becoming a Certified Public Accountant.

She has worked for American Express, Lionel Lewis CPA and   Anchin Block and Anchin CPA, eventually opening her own firm.  Joseph has held the position of President of the New York State Society of CPA for the Queens Brooklyn Chapter and has served at the board level on many other organizations in New York.

She has received numerous awards from various organizations in the past.

Her volunteer and support services are wide and varied reflecting her total commitment to improving the circumstance and situations of others.

Joseph has been a very patriotic Dominican.  She has provided scholarships for students of Roseau through the Roseau City Council, to attend high school and college. She has also been very instrumental in establishing the relationship between the Dominica State College and Medger Evers University in Brooklyn, New York.

She has donated several items to the Grotto Home for the Homeless, Princess Margaret Hospital, (as well as facilitated medical professional assistance),  and many other institutions and individuals.  She has assisted our artists to perform in New York during the Labour Day celebrations.  A special project will come to fruition in December 2013 when she partners with the Roving Care Givers Program.

Dominica was represented at the function by Loreen Bannis-Roberts, Liason Officer, Diaspora Affairs.

Congratulations Ms.Jean Joseph on your award. You have done well for yourself and have been very generous to less fortunate ones in Dominica. Is that award from the Church Group called Q-Kingdom Ministries founded by the Rev.Sylveta Hamilton-Gonzalez?..I believe Ms.Loreen Bannis amongst.others received awards also from that org.but the article said you are the first Dominican..Is it the “Emerald” distinction that makes it different and thus the first Dcan?

Yes, two other Dominicans have been recognized by this institution. They received the Emerald Award. However, Jean Joseph’s award is the “Emerald Award of Excellence” which is the highest ranked category.

Kudos!Kudos! Ms. Joseph, you were my favorite and best teacher during my formative years.
I always remind you of that when we cross paths.
You were a great short-hand teacher and never visualise you getting into finance.
However, during our brief business meeting, I was not surprise of your accomplishment.
You were always a brilliant woman.
Apart from your intellectual competence, you were always willing to go the extra mile( extra lessons for no financial reward.
I can recall, when you had a major surgery and was two (2) days postup that some of my colleagues and myself came to your house for you to help us with exams.
You never sent us away. Despite the fact that you were visible in pain you helped us.
Once again, I thank you. We have lost touch, but I will be coming to New York for my niece’s graduation and I will look up.
Congrats! Lots of love, good luck and blessings

Breath of fresh air for Dominica and Dominicans.
Not much pride coming from Dominica for the past years. Very deserving to a very hard working Dominican. A good government would endorse that.

I vex with Pat Aaron today. On what basis you made that statement. First of all this award is nonesense in the grand scheme of awards from highly accredited places Dominicans recieve awards. Just because they are not on the net bragging doesn’t mean pride isn’t coming from Dominica. I respect you for your contribution to the calypso however you need to pump your breaks and tie your dreads. Everybody in the NY area knows this person circles organisation and moans when her name isn’t called. Some of you are too darn simple and easily impressed. Have you taken the trouble to see the impact Dominicans in Dominica are having everyday on the island and the global sphere, need I educate you on the real achievements and accolades of significance that are heaped on Dominicans globally or are you just to political and whimiscal all you see is the tip of your nose. By the way the government you trying to be sacarstic about, she’s all over ministry when in Dominica trying to make herself important and looking for overseas position, mandah Bambish
