Dominican wins prestigious award in US energy industry

Dexter Newton

La Plaine born, Dexter Newton, has won a prestigious award in the US energy industry for his work on a safety project.

A Con Edison researcher, Newton was named winner of the Technology Transfer Award from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), a US energy research organization.

Newton, an operating supervisor in Electric Operations at Con Edison, has worked for the energy giant since 2006.

Newton, moved to the US as an adult and now lives in Yonkers, NY.

He worked with two fellow Con Edison employees on research into using smart phone and tablet personal computer technology to detect contact voltage on streets.

The technology could make it possible for a utility worker with a smart phone or tablet to detect contact voltage, also known as stray voltage.

The faster contact voltage is detected, the faster crews can make repairs, ensuring public safety.

“We are in a constant and relentless search for technology and methods that can improve our service,” said Craig Ivey, the president of Con Edison. “The men and women of Con Edison are proud to see eight members of our team recognized for research that will benefit the New Yorkers we feel privileged to serve.”

Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc., one of the US’s largest investor-owned energy companies, with approximately $12 billion in annual revenues and $41 billion in assets.

The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to more than 3 million customers in New York City and Westchester County, N.Y.

Newton was one of eight Con Edison employees who won Technology Transfer Awards.

Congrats to the Rastaman. Which raises my question as to why are men with locks still discriminated against in the Caribbean island of Dominica. There are many bright young men out there who are ready and willing to accomplish greatness but constantly have doors closed in their faces because of their appearance. Thankfully we have places like America where outward freedom of expression like growing your locks isnt frowned upon as much. Congrats again guy. Job well done.

Oh Please. Where did he get his education? It started at the La Plaine Primary, Dominica Grammar School then to the Clifton Dupigny Community College. Take that back. My brother studied and worked hard. Thank God he got the opportunity to continue his education in America but his foundation started her in the Nature Isle.

        March 12, 2013

The issue is not where he got his education but where he could fly his wings. Thank him there are places where our smart brothers and sisters can go and not worry about government, politics, bad mindedness, grudge etc. etc. get in the way. We have a good educators and hard working educated people but a political and societal system that will see many more like this hard working young man to go and live their dreams some where else. Thank Him Indeed.

    March 11, 2013

Seriously I applaud him for a job well done. But, do I really care? Not Really!Because there is not one bit of his story that talks about what he will do to help Dominica. Or his future plans to train young boys or girls in the field. I mean come on. It’s not a style doing things for America in American companies n then having DNO publish it. Please mention little Dominica too. I am just sick n tired of it.

You are a fool and a hater! Get over it! What are you doing for the boys and girls in Dominica?

    • Matthew
      March 12, 2013

Have you attended the picnic in Jersey and other functions where he is solely running a fund raiser for the young boys at La Plaine for help with sports? No! Too often we make comments that we know nothing about. He is making a contribution even though you Dr. don’t see it. He does not have to be in Dominica to help the youths there.
