Dominicans and well-wishers of all walks of life on Thursday flooded the State House Conference Center to pay their respects to the late former President of Dominica, His Excellency Dr. Nicholas Liverpool.

The sixth President of Dominica passed away in Miami on June 1.

From 8.30 to 10.30 am, the body of the former President laid in state as the present President of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin and Mrs. Savarin, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Mrs. Skerrit, Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, other government and top ranking officials paid their respects and sympathized with family members.

“I believe the country has lost an extra ordinary human being and as I said on a number of occasions, we can learn a lot from him and we have to emulate a lot of the quality and skills which he possessed,” Prime Minister Skerrit told the media.

He said it is always important for all to cherish and recognize the life of individuals while they are alive.

“I find we spend a lot of time trying to destroy each other which is not good for our society,” he said. “We have to change that attitude and celebrate people’s successes. I am happy that the government, before President Liverpool died, recognized his contribution to Dominica and to indeed the world, by renaming the road in his honor and our hope is that those of us who drive on the road, especially young people, are reminded of his own contribution.”

Parliamentary Representative for Grand Bay and a close friend of the former President, Justina Charles said she will always remember the good times she had with the fallen President.

“I remember those days and really it is sad for me to go out there and look at him lying in a coffin,” she said.

Deputy Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Joshua Francis ,said Dr. Liverpool has left his mark in the history of Dominica.

“I remember him as a soft spoken gentleman and a distinguished gentleman who served Dominica exemplary nationally, regionally and internationally,” he said. “He is a gentleman who left his mark and he will go down in history as one of our best academic scholars, one of the brightest sons of the soil and I can only hope that our children at every level of our society will remember this gentleman and will work to emulate his achievements…”

Former Government Minister, Ambrose George who also spoke to the media, said it is a sad moment for him since he and Dr. Liverpool were very close friends.

“I am here also to show my respect for him, not only as a past President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, but as a luminary as far as jurisprudence is concerned,” he said. “I knew Dr. Liverpool personally, he was a personal friend of mine and what I admire about him, in spite of his busyness as President and practising law, he found time for agriculture, which is in fact my own profession. It’s really a sad moment for me personally and my family and I just want to extend my deepest sympathy to his wife, their children and the entire Liverpool family.”

Minister for Justice, Immigration and National Security Rayburn Blackmore noted that the former President was a “great Dominican and he will be greatly missed and he has left a great legacy for us and what he has done during his life on earth is a great example for us.”

Dr. Liverpool will be laid to rest in the Grand Bay Roman Catholic Cemetery after a state funeral on Friday from 3:00 pm at the Grand Bay Catholic Church.

Hope people put their political differences aside and come together to work to make Dominica a better country, work together to solve problems for everyone that is what he would have wanted. When the country is divided nothing can get done.

Remembering a devoted son of Dominica’s soil, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool.
Au revoir Dr. Nicholas Liverpool, ’till we meet at the feet of Our Lord Jesus Christ. O Happy Day!

We know the saying, “God protects us from something worst than death.”
I have no doubt that he did exactly that with Dr. Liverpool, as with others who predeceased us even though, in our mortal minds we are unable to fathom it but one day we will and for also all circumstances of life.
God who knows, sees and hears all things, whom nothing is hidden from, ordains all to be and knows best.
Note how loving, humble and grateful he was. He ensured that his Funeral Service, obviously one of celebration of his life, will be held in his place of birth in Dominica, Grand Bay and where he will be interred.
I understood he left instructions that a lady from Grand Bay will say some prayers for him. He did not forget them. What love and gratitude!

I don’t see the reason to name a road after the late president his work had nothing to do with road. I would name a court house, a library, or even better the state house but not a road. His work had to do with law not roads. The powers that be should do it right. There were and still are dedicated men who worked very had on roads. Why not name a road or roads after those men like road supervisors, foremen,or a labourer. Those people also need recognition.

I can imagine how sad it will be on Friday saying goodbye to Dr. Liverpool. I expect there will be many hymns/songs of praise to God for giving Dominica someone as Dr. Liverpool who was one of the best. His memory will live on in our hearts and minds. God bless his soul!
The following is another of my favorite prayers taken from that prayer book. Soon Dr. N. Liverpool will be laid to rest and I thought this prayer is a fitting one of praise to Our Lord Jesus Christ, for a life well lived as Dr. Liverpool’s.

    Prayer of Praise

Lord Jesus You are Light, You are Love, You are Power.
It is from Your brightness that events take all their meaning that trials are explained and that we see sufferings cancelled by redemption.
It is in Your nearness that we find peace and security and it is under Your influence that all becomes radiant, is transformed and transfigured.

You are the Way, You are the Truth, for You have the words of eternal life. You yourself are the Life.
You are infinite Love. Infinitely respectful of our liberty, which in Your eyes, is the price of our response to Your love. You have loved us from the beginning and You love us unceasingly regardless of our misery and even of our resistance.
You are the source of true fraternal charity, which alone is capable of resolving the problems that crush the world.
You are All Powerful. You vanquished the world and You are the eternal Victor. It is You indeed Who will always have the last word in everything.
You alone are holy. You alone are Lord. You alone are the Almighty!
Thank you Jesus for all your mercies extended to Dr. N. Liverpool during his life. There is no doubt he is thanking you for them.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen!

Your comment is the height of hatred and wickedness as imbedded in your heart. What wrong did he do to you to deserve such a comment? You are as those who give others thumbs down for stating good comments. You do not like what is good and who is good. Genuine practicing Christians know better not to make such a comment.
Some of you think you are God. God is the judge; not you. He will, one day, judge you and for what you stated.
Hell is waiting for you and as much as you made such a comment. What makes you think you will not end up there? What you wish for others it is exactly what you will receive and two-fold.

Another somber day for Dominica until Dr. Nicholas Liverpool is laid to rest. His memory will live on in our hearts.
How I wished I could be present and also attend his State Funeral. Well, I will be present in spirit.
These are sad days. Tomorrow Friday, I will be attending a funeral for another Dominican who passed away in Toronto. The viewing is tonight which I hope to attend.
We all have reasons to mourn the loss of Dr. Liverpool, a fellow Dominican. It is also a reminder of our departed loved ones and of us, when that day arrives.
This is why we must always do our utmost to love one another as Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us. St. Paul also informed us.
If Dr. Liverpool were alive, he who lived a loving and peaceful life, would inform us and remind us of this godly requirement which will help us to obtain eternal salvation. We must also live it which also means practicing it and remind others about it.
May his soul rest in God’s peace. Amen!

Did you have to state that at this time?
Since you did, there should be a time that visits could be arranged that, it should be opened to D/cans to visit.
I reside in Canada. I have spent time in Ottawa, the capital of Canada and visited Parliament. I visited on a Saturday therefore Parliament was not in session.
It is a tourist site. Security is always present. Groups visit there. Visitors will be shown just what they are allowed to view. I saw where the officials sit when in session.
There is also a gallery for visitors to sit and listen-in to their discussions and debates. It is quite an interesting place.
Probably you could suggest this to your MP that scheduled visits for everyone, D/cans, visitors/tourists alike could be arranged to the State House.

This is how some of you who do not utilize good judgment could mislead others by your comments.
Only a certain amount of people could visit at a time.
Surely, you do not want an influx of people pushing and shoving which could create chaos in the room. This would not be appropriate and considering how Dr. Liverpool lived a humble and peaceful life.
I hope, for security reasons, everyone is searched.

You are incorrect. Business is one and busyness is another. Reread the text of the article. If you do not comprehend and do not know, check the meaning of “busyness” on Research Dictionary or Thesaurus or on your computer spell check and meaning of the word.

    • point
      June 18, 2015

busyness from the word busy meaning to be occupied, busyness is an adverb not related to business.
