DOMLEC boss explains reason for resignation

General Manager of Dominica Electricity Services and Company Limited (DOMLEC), Collin Cover, has cited  a better offer at another company as the reason for his departure from Dominica’s sole electricity supplier.

Cover tendered his resignation to DOMLEC’s board of directors last Friday.

“If six weeks ago somebody would have asked me where would I be in 2016, I would have said right here in Dominica,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday. “But in the past five weeks I was made an offer which I have decided to accept and so I will be moving on to another post in about two or three months. ”

According to him the exact date of his departure has not been finalized since all the administrative procedures have not yet been completed.

“I would like to thank the staff at DOMLEC who have been really wonderful and what has surprised me is the number of people who will come up to me in the street and say that they are sorry to see me leave,” he said. “This has touched me deeply and I want to thank the Dominican public and DOMLEC”.

Cover, who joined DOMLEC five years ago, confirmed that the new position will not be on island but will be in the electricity business. He did not name the company that has made the offer to him, since according to him, the management has not yet met with staff to inform them.

Managing Director of Lights and Power Holdings, Barbados (the majority shareholder of the company) and Deputy Chairman of DOMLEC, Peter Williams indicated that Cover was well loved by members of the staff and well regarded by the public.

“He has made a tremendous difference to the standard which now Dominicans have become accustomed to and we have become confident in the management team and staff here in DOMLEC to continue on the good work and ensure that we have a reliable electricity supply to deliver to all Dominicans,” he said.

Williams noted that the board of DOMLEC will be meeting in a few weeks to chart the way forward.

What can I say about Mr. Cover? Sir for almost two years or close to two years there has not been an island-wide blackout. I know that very well since my generator has only been turned on for only 15 minutes every Wednesday afternoon just to keep my battery in tip top shape.

You must be a recession proof General Manager – making profits in good times and even higher profits in bad times and still have we the customers and I guess your company shareholders having a high approval of your leadership.

Management ability is one thing – your staff will follow your instructions because “you said so” but your leadership prowess is completely bigger and I think that is where you outshine many local leaders of businesses in Dominica because you work magic with your humility , magic with your ability to just listen, magic with your ability to simply mingle with everyone of your staff , community groups , at church, with the Union and magic in getting almost 100% Staff turnout at Domlec’s annual Christmas dinner no matter the distance , no matter the weather.

It is my fervent hope that my honest commentary may serve as a letter of recommendation to your prospective new employer. (Laugh)

I would recommend to the Government of Dominica to honor you with a service medal of honor for exemplary leadership qualities at a local institution.

Hope that we meet in person before you depart.

Mr. Cover, you will surely be missed. Hope a few of the staff members who occasionally took expensive vacations and slept on the job till you put them in check, will continue to do their work even if you’re not around. All the best to Mrs. Cover; I will miss all those delectable desserts you made. You make a ‘wicked’ carrot cake, my dear.

Do visit our shores again, God bless you richly.

Mr Clover it is nice to see people like you move on. Effective and efficient managers don’t stay in a place that long because other countries and companies need your expertise. You are a very down to earth man and any where you working the company will prosper. Therefore, I wish you success in your new job. You will surely be missed.

Good luck Sir in your new undertaking. You certainly made a difference. I am not elated that under your stewardship the company was able to rake in 8 million dollars profit last year. But what I am sure abit is that the electricity supply is more reliable. Un announced outages have drastically reduced and the service has improved. Perhaps it has to do with a very active IRC or your peculiar management proficiency style and expertise. I honestly wish you well Sir. Come back to visit any time
