Former PM still awaiting bed at PMH

John arrived in Dominica on Monday

Family members of former Prime Minister, Patrick John, are expressing grave concern that he has not been allocated a bed at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) hours after he arrived on the island from Martinique where he had gone for medical treatment.

John arrived in Dominica at 3:15 pm on Monday and was transported to the PMH via ambulance and taken to the casualty department. He spent the entire night there and by Tuesday morning, had not been moved.

DNO understands that John was cleaned by family members in the department with little or no privacy.

Reports indicate that family members are expressing surprise and concern over the entire matter.

“It is heartbreaking,” a family member stated, adding that the situation is tantamount to ‘punishment.’

John was admitted to the Princess Margaret Hospital for heart problems on November 29, 2015, and was discharged on December 30.

He was again taken to the institution on January 3 after he complained of shortness of breath. He was subsequently flown to Martinique.

DNO is following this developing story and will publish further information as it becomes available.

Dr. John MUST be accommodated at PMH immediately!!! It is an insult to all Dominicans that this great man who took us to our liberty is being treated in this way.

I call on all Dominicans to voice your displeasure via your political representatives immediately to get relief for Dr. John when he needs it most!!!

“As for the US, if your insurance is not talking they ain’t touching you. some of the poorer citizens actually live with their illnesses as they can’t afford insurance and wait until it becomes an emergency to rush to the hospital when they hope they won’t be turned away from the Emergency services.”(Barbara Sunders).

Barbara, Sunders, everything in the quote above is a lie! First of all nobody goes without medical treatment in America okay! And if you wish to prove that I can give you the telephone number of someone in Dominica, who has a medical problem.

The person never worked one single day in America, they were in NJ, the person got very sick he called me, and told me he forgot his medication in Dominica. I found a county hospital in New Jersey, I gave him the address, his daughter took him, they treated him. To this day he has not paid one dime for his hospitalization and treatment.

He was in the hospital for more than a week. Let me tell you there is a Federal law in America, which prevents all hospitals from demanding money from a patient prior to treating them. Further more there are hospitals right here in California which would treat Patrick John for free.

One Dominica from Grand Bay came here and was treated in that same hospital, okay, okay, so don’t make any unfounded claims which you cannot verify! And as for that crap Facts is talking, I know a man from Wesley who needed a pace maker, his children flew him to Canada, and in less than days they installed a pace maker in his chest.

And this England thing medical treatment is practically free, I never paid for medication, when they give you that prescription there are two boxes, the doctor checks one, pay or not to pay for medication, they usually leave them open, all I would do is check no pay. Facts this is for you.

One day my cousin and I was on a buss in Toronto, I got sick we step off the Buss and walked into a place where there are about two dozen doctors. I visited with one, when I ask him what’s his charge he told me see the lady at the desk, only to find out there was no charge. And mind you I never worked a single day in my miserable or happy life in Canada.

And if you think I lie my cousin is Kathleen Telemaque, the former Dominica and Caribbean Carnival Queen, now a professional Nurse in a hospital in Toronto, in charge of an intensive care unit I believe.

So, watch it when you all decide to make comments that are not altogether accurate you see, and it is simply ignorance to compare any medical system in Europe, and North America to what we have in Dominica, there is absolutely no comparisons!

Facts, I read all of your comments, and I can tell say you are perhaps the most evil, most hypocrite human alive. Now where it pertains to the mother of Satan, evil wicked, confounded Elizabeth, cat seems to have cut her tongue.

I would like to ask her where is the heart of her blessed Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit the one she claimed God ordained to rule over Dominica? How come Elizabeth, you are not asking Skerrit, why they allow John to be discharged from a Hospital in Martinique to be brought back to Princes Butcher Shop Hospital?

Saverin spent more than a year in Martinique, he returned well, making more than a million dollars playing president. Austrie as far as I understand is still out there, out of the island; I am sure his medical bills are paid by Dominica Taxpayers.

What happen to Patrick John, is he a dog? Most former Prime Ministers of the Caribbean are paid more than ten thousand dollars per month. Even Leblanc got his cut: Has Patrick John received…

We are all viewing the predicament of a man who should never be made a public spectacle. Nevertheless, that is suffering caused by poverty. Her is a man who was forced to accept independence from the British. Hence becoming the first Prime Minister of Dominica!

If anything can be proved from his suffering at this moment, is that he faithful served the nation without staling from the country. Had John been a thief, he probably would have enough money to take care of his medical expenses. It is a shame he left one hospital in Martinique, only to be returned to a butcher shop. To me that is an indication he is unable to pay for continued treatment in Martinique.

In spite of his bad error in judgment a few years ago; our nation should have at least if not respect for the man, we should have empathy, therefore the government of Dominica should be responsible for his medical expenses even to the day he die!

Skerrit gave away five hundred thousand dollars to his boy bishop, he recently bought eight families for $250,000.00: Give Patrick John a helping hand! The man is human as everyone else, he is Dominican born, a native son, who devoted his entire life to the development of our country.

First in the field of education where he taught secondary education, he should not be treated like a sack of potato’s which fell of a truck on it way to the market. Had it not been Patrick John most of us would never become aware of the way our people suffer, what happens to all the unknown?

They suffer, and die in silent unnoticed! That’s what happens to people when the exists in poverty stricken backward country!

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        February 18, 2016

Facts, no matter what the issue it boils down to Skerrit.

You see facts, government is not supposed to give away to people for free as in this case of the $250, 000.00. you see there is a way to do something like that however, the recipient must must get it in a form of a loan, in order to repay. I am sure I am sure you must have heard the term “SBA” (Small Business Association).

In America anybody who have a business plan, or struggling business apply for a loan to open or improve on a small business. However, nothing comes free, one even have to pay to apply for the loan, and there is no guaranty they will be successful in obtaining any money.

Now there are other situations where one can get a grant; there is no repayment, however, no government official simply go in front had hand money for a show for free.

        Only in Dominica!

I would want to believe that now the story has found itself on DNO, the medical professionals at the hospital would have already received their instructions from the political directorate to just do something. Do we have to wait for that? Does everything rest on the politician. Shouldn’t the medical professional have acted differently before this matter reached DNO? So who should be blamed for this foolish situation. The PM and his Minister of Health? Did the PM and Dr. Darroux tell the PMH professionals to keep Mr. John in the Casualty? Let us run our mouth. I suppose you reside in D/ca which is why you have this mentality. What do you really know?
Nationals should help in constructing a hospital. Sadly, everything falls on the government because some nationals who may be able to afford will never assist or may never consider it. They expect the government to do everything. You should know this and be considerate of the PM. He has a lot on his shoulders.
I reside in a country where hospital management are responsible for constructing as much as a wing of the hospital. Much of the funding is provided by some rich people. The government donates a certain amount which is on behalf of taxpayers’; their money.
They consistently fund-raise and have lotteries to raise funds. Some stores have a box and customers are asked to donate be it their change. They are asked if they would like to donate, be it $2.00. These few dollars could later amount to millions. Hope you learn something from this.

In England they have to either bed admitted on a ward within 4 hours or the hospital will be charged. On compare England with Dominica. The patients in England must be given that respect and dignity that they deserve. In Dominica they are treated like rubbish.

      • February 17, 2016

I am now letting you know that this is what you think, every hospital in england have bed and extra easy chairs to put people to lay down, whether you are white or black.
That none sense you just spoke about saying they must be bed admitted or they will be charged that is not true at all, someone can remain so long awaiting medical help after they are taken into the hospitals some die because they waited too long on a stretcher, ambulance driver when they are called ,some of them park the vehicle with the sick patient and go to the shops to buy food, this is happening in england,,there is a box which is ticked on an old patient file because when you are old most times they do not pay much attention to you they rather see you die,no the politicians are talking about it so that they can un-tick that box, even babies mouths a scotch taped to prevent them from crying, doctors rape children that are not far from dying, there is more evil things happening in UK than any where..

I sincerely believe that Dominica is not making real, meaningful progress. Right now, the effort is to prevent Dominica from slipping into the precipice. But those efforts are little. Where there is no vision, no national consciousness and the absence of good governance, the people will perish.

Did you mean Dominica? By itself? Or would it be certain nationals, those who talk more and do less or nothing at all and criticize and debase their country as you.

So if no beds are available at the hospital should they make one magically appear because he is a former PM?Until we have traveled to other countries to see what others endure we will not stop crying down on our own.In certain countries patients are to sit outside of the emergency room for more than 24 hours sometimes two days before beds are made available. Here, we at least give patients a bed at the emergency room leaving no room for actual emergencies. We talk too much in Dominica when we know nothing. We simply need to begin taking better care of ourselves so that the hospital can have beds available for when patients need to be admitted. The hospital is facing a great ordeal where all wards are filled to capacity with center beds and no space to put additional patients. So, what should be done in this case?If there is no space, what do we really expect the administration to do?We need to be reasonable, he at least has somewhere to lay his head while they await discharges from a ward.

That’s is certainly bullocks…That does not happen in the UK. Never do patients be sitting outside an emergency unit…They need to been seen within 4 hours…The problem is no beds…which is quite a sad situation. ..someOne needs to take responsibility. ..It is just bad management of Dominica.

        Family

Don’t come with that uppity nonsense about what doesn’t happen in the UK. I am not defending any inefficiency in Dominica or anywhere else, but I’ve been in the UK for some time too and I can tell you some choice stories which made me pray every day never to get sick there, free national health services notwithstanding.

As for the US, if your insurance is not talking they ain’t touching you. some of the poorer citizens actually live with their illnesses as they can’t afford insurance and wait until it becomes an emergency to rush to the hospital when they hope they won’t be turned away from the Emergency services.

I’m fed up with some Dominicans in the Diaspora who are more miserable than some of us here could ever be, then run their mouths about Dominica!

Only in Dominica, Mr john is a former PM of Dominica and should be treated better than that once and for all, this is a disgrace and shame on the so call Labour Party Skerrit and his boys, just remember that there are billionaires and millionaires putting guns to their heads, cannot enjoy the wealth etc and dying like rats in caves and other deplorable state, also remember that there is a season and time for everything in life, just take a lo8k at your fingers and you will see what I am talking about

Consider this. I would also state, a few of those beds are taken up by those who were attacked by lawless people. If only they didn’t attack them. Due to this, their victims needed a hospital bed/room. In this case, there probably would have been more empty beds and rooms.

While I understand how the family feels, I have been a patient at two of the top ranked hospital in Manhattan New York. at one I waited 13 hours before a bed was assigned and at the other I waited two whole days. The reality is if all beds are filled, the staff has to wait until someone has been discharged to take him in, especially with our limited hospital spaces.

We hope however, considering the fact that he served in one of the highest capacities in the country that he would be given priority treatment. I want to wish Mr. John and his family the best. I will pray for your family.

well said; one of the few comments that made sense. no beds does not mean no beds on the hospital compound or in the storage; it means no physical space to accommodate any more beds; go take a look; there are beds all along the passageway; DNO stop the sensationalism and stop misleading people.

I believe you. They cannot throw out/discharge any of the patients prematurely. They will have to wait until one becomes available. May it be soon. In the meantime I hope he is comfortable.

It is indeed embarrassing that the hospital has run out of beds. This happens all the time. However, PM or not the hospital cannot put someone out of the hospital before he’she is truly ready to be discharged. Because then that person’s family might end up grieving the loss of a family member because he’she didn’t receive full medical care because space had to be made for someone else simply because he is a former PM. We have to be fair. As long as he’s getting the attention he needs for the short time he’ll be at the casualty then we just need to have a little patience. Our hospital is not the best but it’s what we have. Hopefully our new hospital will be commissioned as promised.

You my dear friend are not looking at the situation wisely.. they are not implying that preference be made for him .. it is just ridiculous that someone has to wait that long knowing their condition to get a bed at yhe hospital. If we are so boasting our heath care systems beda should be readily avaiable.. because I’m sure if it was the Prime minister roosvelt skerrit , a bed would have already beeb there days beforw he arrives. Ooops my bad.. he would mever even think of visiting the hospital because it is too poor for him.. stop being so heart less.. this is a sick man we are talking about.. i

If only the critics would think beyond. There were beds available prior to Carnival which was only last week. Think of those who were attacked by criminals who needed a hospital bed/room.
Are the two elderly ladies who were attacked by the rapist still in the hospital?
This may account for the lack of beds.

Now most of us who did not understand what Alix Knight meant when she said, ” it is better to be Red then dead, ” I hope we understand now. If Mr. John was singing from the same hymn sheet as Skeritt, he could never be languishing in an emergency ward for hours. Savarin was partly responsible for the demise of the DLP under the leadership of Mr. John, though embarrassing, they found an uncomfortable area in the hospital to house him, but he had his privacy. It is rumored, Mr. John is a supporter of the UWP, therefore, he must be punished for not being Red, he has to pay the price.

Oh dear! If that is really the case, I think the hospital administrator could have stepped in to find a place in the hospital for Mr. John. The ward is probably full, but alas, there must be some ward with at least a bed, perhaps Stronach or somewhere else in the hospital. Casuality staff will not put him in the hallway but magway sar.
