Former President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the late Dr. Nicholas Liverpool will be laid to rest in Grand Bay after a state funeral on Friday.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, on Tuesday evening.
On Thursday the body of the late former President will lie in state at the State House in Roseau.
“On Thursday from 8:30 in the morning the body shall lie in state at the conference facility of the State House where His Excellency the President, Mr. Charles Savarin and Mrs Savarin, and government officials and other public functionaries and private citizens will have the opportunity to pay their last respects to President Liverpool,” Skerrit said. “That will go up until 1:30 in the afternoon and on Friday the 19th of June from 3:00 pm the state funeral for Dr. Liverpool shall commence at the Grand Bay Roman Catholic Church and internment at the Grand Bay Roman Catholic Cemetery.”
He stated that all arrangements are in place for the former President’s funeral and burial.
“The government’s team has been in direct consultation with Mrs Liverpool and her family, because whenever there is an official or state funeral, we recognize that there is a private aspect of it and the government’s position is that we must always ensure that the family’s wishes are respected,” he said. “Notwithstanding the fact it is a state function because essentially the state is responsible for the burial of our former President.”
The Prime Minister, who was expected to travel to Grenada for the OECS Heads of government meeting to officially hand over chairmanship to the Prime Minister of Grenada, revealed that it’s absolutely necessary that he remains in Dominica for the funeral.
“I felt it was absolutely important that I remain in the country during the last days of His Excellency’s physical presence with us leading up to his burial,” he noted.
Dr. Liverpool passed away in Miami on June 1.
The following is a prayer which I got from a prayer book at the St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal. Ever since, I pray it frequently for the departed souls and ask others to do likewise. I have made numerous copies and also given to those whose loved ones have departed this world to eternity. I view it as an efficacious prayer which could help those souls that are making atonement in Purgatory. God knows who they are. Therefore, we pray it and leave it up to Him as we should.
With the soul of Dr. Nicholas Liverpool in mind, I thought I would include this prayer on DNO’s Website for all. Especially Catholics, take note and copy it to pray for any soul.
Sincere prayers to God, for the mortal and spiritual benefit of others, whether living or departed are never in vain. God hears them and will do with them as He will.
Prayer For The Departed Soul of Nicholas Liverpool
Nicholas is departed Lord, after having loved You; a sinner who had asked You for pardon.
We can help him to get back to Your presence soon. We implore you in prayer for him. Of ourselves we have but little to offer for him, but in Christ we have the infinity of His merits. Accept them as a deduction from his debt.
Lord, we offer our prayers for those who gave us life, for those who fed us, taught us, cared for us, for those who opened Your way of love to us.
We offer You our prayers for all those to whom we did good, and for those whom we may have afflicted.
Enter Nicholas, Lord, into Your place of rest, into that peace and joy without end, which You have prepared for him from all eternity.
May Nicholas enter into Your infinite glory. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto Nicholas, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen!
May the soul of Nicholas and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen!
This is according to your mentality. You are incorrect. Your views do not represent that of everyone. He was a former President and He deserves the recognition and State Funeral. In his spiritual world, he is pleased. In fact, God is pleased that he is being honored in such a dignified manner.
He achieved status on his own. His ambition was to educate himself and he accomplished this through ambition, diligent studies and hard work.
Even in his parting, he is one to be admired and emulate. He worked and did not depend on the government. He could have eaten and lived comfortably without being the President; likewise acquiring status.
Some of you critics who think you know everything and it must be your way, according to your thoughts and action would do well to emulate him and cease criticizing the government (and others) who is doing their part to make D/ca a better place for each one of you. Gratefulness is an act of godliness.
President Liverpool was a good man, in touch with the common people but he is dead, never to come again. May his soul rest in peace.
So why mr. Skerrit has to say that instead of attending a very important regional meeting of Heads of State, it is absolutely necessary that he remains in Dominica for the funeral when only last week he was shaking hands with the King of Belgium in Brussels at the same time his people, live Dominicans were being fired on by their own police at the risk of death? By all means, be at the funeral but I respectfully would say it is more important for him to be here in a crisis to protect the living. I sometimes find mr. Skerrit’s reasoning bizarre, difficult to understand.
This is an excellent decision on the part of the PM to remain in Dominica out of respect for the former President, Dr. N. Liverpool until his burial.
Every considerate, compassionate, patriotic Dominican expected this of the PM. They would not have thought otherwise.
Roosevelt, Nicholas would have said that you are making too much fuss. and certainly would not have approved you using his funeral as an excuse not to attend the OECS meeting. That is low and shabby Roosevelt.
We know very well that you do not want to face your colleagues to explain why you alone campaigned for Patricia Scotland to be the next head of the Commonwealth, when at the same time you are talking so much about integration and unity. That funeral could easily have been re-arranged. President Liverpool in his dry wit would have pointed out that he is not going anywhere in a hurry! I am not coming to that show at the State House, out of respect for my old friend, who would not have liked all this pomp. Simplicity was his style. I have already said my goodbye and wished him eternal peace.
@jojo, well woop ti doo. good for you. how condescending.
Your comments are out of place and at a time as that.
You and others as you who make biased comments lack compassion. God heard you and saw what you wrote. Your day is coming.
Mr. Liverppol you were a humble servant,Skerrit who cares if you are present, the atrcities your doing to the Salisbury people dont think no one in their right mind gives one cent about you anymore.
