Just days before Mother’s Day, 13 mothers in need from various communities on island were given with hampers at a special recognition ceremony held at the Dominica National Council of Women (DNCW) office on Friday.
They are Rosalind Stuart of Grandbay, Judith Henry of Portsmouth, Liza Luke of Mahaut, Annette Defoe of Grandbay, Elioma Valmond of Cochrane, Samantha Wilson of Yampiece, Mrs. Llie Helena-Brown of Salisbury, Mariana Valmond of the Kalinago Territory and Esther Dangleben of Wesley, Jacqueline Christopher of Roseau & Mariana Valmond, Cornillia Francis of Kingshill and St. Pierre Monas & Guety Louis Jean of St-Joseph.
The initiative was presented by the DNCW in collaboration with CariMan (Caribbean Male Action Network) and the Bureau of Gender Affairs.
Acting Director at the Bureau of Gender Affairs, Kyra Paul said at the ceremonty that mothers play a critical role in the social development of the country as well “producing the human resource that is needed to sustain our whole development.”
Paul hopes that the hamper goes a long way in helping the mothers meet the challenges they face, especially in preparing meals for the day.
Meantime representative of CariMan (Dominica), Pastor Phillip Carlisle said every year CariMan looks forward to the occasion where it can contribute to DNCW and women on a whole.
“We are indeed very happy to be part of this, not only today but for many years to come,” he said. “It is Mother’s Day coming up, but it is always Mother’s Day, so we want to thank you for the job you have done and continue to do. We know it is a tedious work, we know that sometimes your job gets very frustrating but at the end of it, it is rewardable.”
He stated that amidst the frustration and pressures mothers encounter on a consistent basis they remain faithful to their task and responsibilities and do their outmost “so that we can at least salvage values of our children into the distant future.”
Sponsors of the event include J.Astaphans and Co Ltd, Issa Trading, Scotia Bank, National Bank of Dominica, National Credit Union, Fortyoung Hotel, Ms. C. Charles and Unicomer.
I couldn’t miss this news article about NEEDY MOTHERS GET SPECIAL RECOGNITION.
I noted the organizations (DNCW and CariMan) responsible for this project.
Gosh, those hampers were beautiful. I can only imagine how they looked close up in real life. More important they contained practical items to meet real needs.
Naturally you will find individuals who express negativity when such a project is undertaken. I understand where they are coming from. At the same time think it is wonderful that there are people who care about their fellow human beings enough to reach out a helping hand. Reading DNO for over two years I know there are many such good people in Dominica.
The title of this news article contained the word NEEDLY. This is the only reason necessary. Mothers are in need. You don’t have to know why or have all the answers. You only need to care. You SAW the need and you DID something.
God bless you
Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.
What your right hand do your left hand should not know. Just let your heart store it.this is how you get blessings. Not showing off.
Not everyone in the pic are mothers. Some are representatives of did contribution firms.
why make the headline “needy mothers”? are they trying to publicly humiliate them? As if them having to struggle isn’t humiliation enough. Met one of them not too long ago and she was so frustrated. And feeling ashamed to be struggling so much. and one of them is from the UK. Was sent to dca as a kid and basically has been struggling all her life. And now cant even afford to buy tickets to return. SO PUBLICLY calling them ‘Needy’ AND S THEIR FACES ALONG WITH THE NAME is quite INSENSITIVE AND HUMILIATING DNO. Wouldnt be surprised if it was the doing of the editor sanford. anything for the attention of a story smh
It takes all these organization to give someone one hamper that last two days. How about creating gainfull employment.
Congratulatioins to the mothers and Happy Mothers Day.
You gave some one a hamper that is news?
They might not all be experiencing poverty or hardship , they may be doing great jobs as mothers, e.g. caring for their families whilst looking after elderly loved ones…or bringing up their families single handed with no support and doing a great job….Its nice they are recognised for the great jobs they do….the wording are not always right….They might be needy but not in a negative way….A pampering for a mother who is a mother 24/7 is great, a hamper means she can have rest from shopping for Mothers Day…Great Gesture – True where is the PM wife…don’t forget she lives abroad…her heart is not in DA….
mampie I see you nice work DA….
That’s news then.giving and talking is like a reproach
FAMILIES in need.
I support helping those in need. However we need to find ways to make them independent, so they won’t have to rely on help and be able to help other. Job creation please
Why are these charitable support in Dominica always publicised? Is this what Christ taught you all, to announce when you help the poor and the needy?
There is a line between letting the public know what you do in order to gain applause and letting them know to encourage others to partner with you or do the same good works.
Charitable organizations face the challenge of making their work known in order to raise funds for ongoing work of in a manner that lets the recipients of their kindness maintain their dignity without being humiliated.
Personally I think the organizations that had the pictures taken and provided this information for DNO did it to encourage other people to do the same in the future and also generate funds for their ongoing good work. Charities need funds. People cannot support what they do not know about.
The mothers need not be embarrassed about accepting the hampers. Many years ago my wife and I received gifts for our baby. Sarah still receives gifts on Mother’s Day. It is a joyful part of life.

Oh dear…here we go…parading poverty and women as helpless
Take a chill pill!! Better yet, have the bag of pills.
You mean caring for and sharing with others who, for whatever reason, could use the gift right now is making them helpless? Wow! Greed is really one of the deadly sins.
Maybe their names and faces could have been omitted from the story but it is quite possible they have no problem with that. Their neighbours surely will not go around now spreading their names that they stole anybody’s stuff…
I don’t think this was the purpose of the presentation.
Somebody does not have to be poverty stricken before we show kindness and give them a little joy. It should just be what we do when we have an opportunity. Who more deserving than mothers? What better time than Mother’s Day?
Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.
Where is Mrs Skerrit when we need her?
Was this a government issue, what’s the need for her to attend? She is not a member of the council.
She is allowing Nostagia to do the same!!!!!!! At least she started it right!!!!!!!!
If you had heard of her involvement in that affair you would have accused “Skerrit of politicising everything!”
So why was it necessary to post their names? Names of criminals are with held but giving needy mothers a basket and their names must be posted? SMH
So can anybody tell me where my pm wifey is she forget us man. No more hampers for us again is mothers day we. what happen because it was election you were giving out hampers and clothes so nuh. well is mothers day and remember your promise that you will continue to help us.
NEEDY Mother: go and work hard and stop depend on the girl for everything, allu too lazy…
Good gesture for these mothers! but wait there is a traitor on board I wonder if the one with the white blouse or white shirt is really a mother!
He is representing one of the benefactors… (That’s me) LOL
