Tarnia Green moves to SAT Telecoms

Green was at GIS for 17 years
Green was at GIS for 17 years

Her voice and image have been on the television screen in Dominica as a journalist with the Government Information Service (GIS) for the past 17 years.

She has served under various administrations from Dame Eugenia Charles to now Roosevelt Skerrit and many will tell you that she has done a “professional job and served with great distinction.”

The name is Tarnia Green and from July 21, 2014 she became the Media Production Manager at SAT Telecoms.

In an exclusive interview with DNO, Green explained that she felt “honoured” and “privileged” to be given that opportunity to serve in that capacity at SAT Telecoms.

“Throughout my 17 years at GIS, I have been able to gain a wealth of experience in media and so in my current position, I am hoping that I will be able to use my experience over the past 17 years to build a new breed of professionalism in the field of media in Dominica,” she said.

SAT, she said, is a relatively new entity in Dominica and needs some improvement in the quality of its output in the news department and in the general programming.

“With my experience, I will have the ideal opportunity to help shape the company in realizing some of its most critical goals,” she stated. “In Dominica, one of the things that we lack is that of local content and I feel that I am in the ideal position to shape and craft some new programmes in a very effective manner.”

She stated that she is excited about her new job.

“I have done my best at GIS, and have served well and with distinction and helped the department to grow,” she stated. “I worked as a professional under different administrations and I have no regrets in my decision to move on to excel, move on and continue to move and grow in the field of media in Dominica.”

To young journalists and media practitioners she advises, “if we are planning to get in the media, I want to suggest that people get there because they have a passion and not because it’s a job and they want something to do.”

“You come in that field because you want to do well, you want to be an example and a role model and a professional, that is what we are lacking in Dominica,” she said. “Get qualified, learn from the best, keep reading keep being informed, the media is a no nonsense business, you have to be a professional, you are never too young or old to learn.”.

Green’s many accomplishments as a local media personality/journalist, and more recently as second in command at the GIS, has established her as “one of the most respected and admired public news journalists and news anchors in Dominica” reporting on several major stories of national importance.

During her career in the media she has had the opportunity to travel extensively for training opportunities to countries such as Taiwan, Equador, London, China, Cuba, and Venezuela.

Special assignments have also taken her to neighboring countries including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Grenada, Barbados, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Highlights of her career include reporting on major national events such as the death of three Prime Ministers: Roosevelt Douglas, Pierre Charles and Dame Mary Eugenia Charles.

According to her, one of her most prized documentaries was one done on Dominica’s Dame Mary Eugenia Charles, known as “The Iron Lady,” in 2003.

In 2005 she was named the Best Television News Presenter at the DBS Radio Flamboyant Awards.

In that same year, she travelled to Cuba where she produced a 40-minute television documentary on the “Miracle Eye Care Program,” an initiative of President’s Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.

Apart from mainstream involvement in news, she has been involved in a number of extra- curricular activities including being a training consultant for contestants in the Miss Dominica Pageant.

Green’s dream is to one day soon host her own Television Talk show in Dominica as her focus is to highlight and bring practical solutions to social problems facing her country’s people.

Can anyone tell me what G.I.S stands for, cause I see people saying its great she left because its to political but last time I checked politics forms a Gov. and all reporting on that program should be about Gov. workings so if she left because it was to political then for all these years she was in the wrong field. Now Dorival CNN and all the other news channels report on balance news they are not anchors of USGIS so to bring lime in a milk pot is wrong.

its impossible to call a journalist person who has been working for 17 years for the government. Her profession is Public Relations official who served under numerous administrations. Journalism is about being impartial and independent…its about being able to stand for what you believe. Its about ability to bring to your audience different opinions and different point of views Governmental work is about speaking and writing exactly what your government decided…So please don’t confuse a journalism and public funded propaganda…

  23. July 24, 2014

Sorry, DNO. That should be, Tarnia. I did not proof-read my comment before posting it. An example careless attention to detail, that I mentioned below.

  24. July 24, 2014

    Congrats, Tarnish.

I think this is an excellent move for SAT Telecoms. Over the years I have noticed some shoddy news editing where person’s names are not matched with the images shown.

Producing good local documentaries calls for creativity, technical know-how, passion, stamina and cooperation, but what is needed in the local media, is a lot more exploration and news production and analysis on regional and international news events. I see no reason why the Dominican audiences should remain only focused on local issues–that leads to tunnel vision.

Lastly, on the question of training, I would like to see the resurrection of the Media Association Workers of Dominica (MWAD) to secure the on-going accreditation and training that is so essential for success in this fast-paced profession.

I look forward to seeing Tarnia’s contribution to SAT and the media in Dominica.

I am happy you have left that jewboom. I cannot understand why an intelligent and experience journalist like you could be by-passed. There is an allegation, the position of General Manager of a national radio station it is about to be given to someone else. It was more embarrassing that despite all your years of service, it is alleged, a foreigner is being paid a bigger salary and given more privileges then you.

      July 24, 2014

You don’t get it because you have a very small mind in need of some exposure.

Tarnia was the face of GIS for close to two decades and of course her absence is glaring and hence the reason why it makes news.

When this weather man left Good Morning America to join the Weather Channel, the story was all over the news in the US. If Wolf Blitzer leaves CNN, I bet you this will make the news.

So stop being small minded.. It is embarrassing.

      • July 25, 2014

        Dorival John.

Hello and good morning my people. Yes if Wolf Blitzer leave CNN it will be news so why don’t you asked Wolf Blitzer about the War Crimes the Israel Military is committing in Palestine. That Apartied Country.

      • yea
        July 26, 2014

        @Tony
I fully agree with you. All mainstream is just propagandist well paid and willing to justify any atrocities their government commits or at least supports politically and diplomatically. CNN is the bunch of public officials pouring propaganda and never willing to deliver any picture which is not approved by their bosses in White House. Condem Israel? You joking brotherman…it never happens.
GIS in Dominica is the same…it serves political interest of present government.

All the best to her, has a massive task bringing SAT’s news to the Marpin standard, but it’ll be good for the industry. Looking forward to seeing how Marpin will continue to improve their news packages

    • Funny
      July 25, 2014

I like that comment. As if to say Marpin news is of such a high standard. Or is it that SAT is of such a low standard?

      Eh ben weh!

But if Marpin is the gold standard, then Tarnia will not have to work very hard at all.

      July 25, 2014

High standard, Marpin news?????????? Are you watching another Marpin?????? If we did not have schools in DA Marpin would not have any content in their news! The few times they mention anything serious, we are told a follow-up will be reported at a later stage. We never hear anything again. News reporting has to be edgy, not afraid to report all sides and must take risks. Marpin sits on the fence and is too ‘safe’ to be taken seriously.

MUCH SUCCESS TO YOU Ms. GREEN.
it is clear that you strive for success and have a diligence and passion to want to succeed. Persist until you succeed. importantly too, ensure that your programming and content is refreshing and uplifting, balanced and insightful and for variety and sound education, let their be a segment on news analysis. Sadly most of our people prefer to talk rather than analyze. This I hope will elevate the level of meaningful discussion on matters of interest to the populace. For the youth let there be meaningful edutainment programmes as resources would permit.

I WISH YOU JOY SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT !!
