I want a clean sweep – PM Skerrit

PM Skerrit going through the crowd at the end of the rally

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has asked Dominica Labour Party supporters to give him and his DLP administration a clean sweep in the next general elections which he hinted could be soon.

Mr. Skerrit addressed a large a crowd of his supporters at a rally in Roseau on Tuesday night, one day after an election petition against him and education minister, Petter Saint Jean, was dismissed by the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC).

The ECSC, in its ruling on Monday, ended a more than three-year court battle in which the legitimacy of Skerrit and Saint Jean as elected members of parliament, was challenged.

The petition was filed by Maynard Joseph and Ron green who ran for the opposition United Workers Party in the constituencies won by Skerrit and Saint Jean.

Referring to the recent one-sided election victory of the New National Party in Grenada, the Prime Minister told his audience, “Keith Mitchel in Grenada is my friend. I love him dearly but I am really jealous of him. Keith has something that I want.”

Skerrit told the crowd of cheering supporters that Prime Minister Mitchel and the NNP had accomplished something he believes that the Dominica Labour party deserves. “I am not saying what it is tonight,” he stated, “I am not saying what it is tonight but if your guess is that it is a clean sweep of the polls, then I cannot say you are wrong.”

The DLP leader urged party faithfuls to help him ‘fight tooth and nail’ to increase the DLP’s numbers in the next general elections. “I want my revenge for three years of mental strain and stress, to be a thorough and comprehensive whipping of the United Workers Party at the polls whenever the next general elections are held,” he said.

He down played the notion that Tuesday’s rally was a celebration of his court victory stating, “I did not celebrate yesterday, neither did I celebrate today, nor will I celebrate tomorrow. I am reserving my celebration for this court victory to my victory and the victory of this great political party at the polls next time around.”

Skerrit said he would declare the day after the elections a public holiday ” for I intend to have one full day of celebrations for our triumph over these hooligans one more time.”

He urged his followers to “return to your communities and begin your work….. for I want you to tell all and sundry tonight that Skerrit has hinted that it won’t be long”.

    Greed, jealousy, envy…such a shame

U want a clean sweep? Huh
But all this is in retaliation for the sleepless nights that the case effected on him. But then u are known not to always tell the truth.
De man is driven by a huge ego. It appears that beast just can’t be satisfied. That ego continues to expose u Boss.
But how de hell u think Dayton Baptiste can beat Edison James in Marigot? U forget de buy-election? U better look hard to find a formidable candidate.

Honestly though, u doh find u have enuff trouble handling 18 to 3 and crying about a divided country? How can this be if u claim all this support? But then DLP winning all 21 seats will not create that unity u thinking of. How u expect de country to unite when u want to punish people who have opposing views to u?

It is not necessary to have all 21 seats to unite de people. Unifying de nation is not something U nor ur DLP aiming towards. My guess is u want to draw a line and us AND attempt to eliminate all opposition till death does the DLP.

Dominicans are so politically stupid and hungry that I have no doubt they may give him a clean sweep not on the basis of performance but because we are politically uneducated and we like to collect our ration.
What has Skeritte done to even win a next election? Dominica is the most backward country in the Windward Islands and since Skerrit became PM, the country has lost its credibility, criminals all over the world hold our passport, we move from a 68 seater jetliner to a 38 seater flight, billions dumped on melvillehall and we for sure will get nothing in return from it, we have lost our constitution big time, agriculture has gone down the drain which left at list 25% of our population unemployed, crime rate has gone upstairs, sports gone down the drain like it was washed by a series of storms, migration is our main source of export as young people cannot find job and the list goes on. Yet the man is calling for a clean sweep. But knowing my people and how backward thinking we are, he might very well get it.

Very well said……now right a letter to Eddo,Ron and the rest of them and tell them that is what they have to be talking about 24/7 on Radio, public meetings and other ways so that most of these people(unfortunately,we as a people are not politically sophisticated)can EVENTUALLY get the message.Tell them to explain to the people in every day parlance, don’t speak/explain things above their “heads”…tell them to try and be like a Mike Douglas….God knows we need a person of Mike’s calibre right now….break it down for the people…use patois phrases like a Mike or Rosie would do……because God help us.

If only ballot papers had a like and dislike box too eh? You all can always ask for that as part of the electoral reform you keep asking for.

    DNO on 25 February:

“I understand there are certain people in Dominica who are trying to link what has happened in Grenada to what may happen in Dominica. One thing that has to be made clear is that every country has its own circumstances and there were particular circumstances which existed in Grenada before and during the election campaign which led to the election outcome. We do not see any correlation to what happened in Grenada and what may happen in Dominica,” PM Skerrit pointed out.

He then went on to congratulate the Barbados PM on his election victory but there were no such words for of congratulation for his “friend’ Dr. Keith Michel.

    But today on DNO:

Referring to the recent one-sided election victory of the New National Labour Party in Grenada, the Prime Minister told his audience, “Keith Mitchel in Grenada is my friend. I love him dearly but I am really jealous of him. Keith has something that I want.”

Skerrit told the crowd of cheering supporters that Prime Minister Mitchel and the NNP had accomplished something he believes that the Dominica Labour party deserves. ”I am not saying what it is tonight,” he stated, “I am not saying what it is tonight but if your guess is that it is a clean sweep of the polls, then I cannot say you are wrong.”

He should follow in the footsteps of Obama who placed his birth certificate online when his place of birth was questioned. Skerrit should have showed his passport on DNO, Marpin, Sat for all to see. Instead he hid behind the technicalities of the law and he will always be guilty in my eyes and most Dominicans. His failure to come clean with us shows clearly that his character is not suited to hold such high office. What a shame!!!

And who is aiding and abetting the people to become lazy? The Government with its handout programmes as a substitute for real development! The ”handouts approach” was used by Chavez. What happened? Venezuela has the lowest per capita income growth in all of Latin America with all its oil, production of which has been declining since Chavez came to power. People cannot even get the basic food supplies in the stores. Those who are lucky have to pay higher prices with inflation running at 22 per cent! The only reason why politicians like those in the DLP admininstration are giving handouts is that they buy votes. The handout approach does not deliver on people’s development and empowerment.

He continue to speak and lend his expertise to government agencies, colleges, schools, High Schools, Primary Schools, various Community Councils. He had the courage to face up to the corruption in the judicial system, the Magistracy, the DPP’s Office. He continue to speak his mind from Prison treatment and condition to environmental damage, electricity regulation, unfairness of Customs, poverty, crime, the media, the treatment of young people. Well, examine the facts: 18 full time government parliamentarians versus 3 part-time Opposition parliamentarians. Also, add a Public Accounts Committee, headed by the Leader of the Opposition, that is still sleeping. Factors in also, a UWPwee that has repeatedly proven that it cannot mobilize public support. I could go on, but i ask: Does the PM currently have any opposition/”checks and balances” in the House?

The UWPwee’s presence in the House has been to us as important as its absence.

      • Peeping Tom
        March 14, 2013

Very wrong, legal eagle! An intelligent politician will want the Opposition in the House to help legitimize his policies. Why do you think that the DLP administration was so eager to get the sprinkling of UWPwee legislators back in the House? Certainly it was not because they missed them or because they needed their votes.

We have not had their presence in the House, legal eagle. Even when they are there their presence still amounts to zero, absence. Yet, has there been any “implosion”? This doomsday scenario is so old that it can’t even remember its own age. Dominica has been very fine without the UWPwee, legal eagle. Let it remain in Q95 to throw stones.

we are redddddy for our brand new candidate who will bring a fresh new breath to the dlp and the government.

Trust me if that person decides to run. It will be more than a deposit losing/landslide victory for DlP in Roseau South/Newtown, at the next Poll.

This master candidate will transform the politics nationally and within the Roseau South . We cannot wait. Very soon delegations from different parts of the constituency will be sent to make that critical requests which we do hope will be accepted. I need to say that informal discussions have started….you need news then I will soon have breaking news.Last nite meeting was a bomb…..in less than 24 hours to attract thousands in Roso that speaks volumes of the power of Labour. Clearly the DLP and its Pm and indeed this government is extremely powerful and seriously popular,,,a clean sweep is nt an impossibility.
PS While I applaud the move by the government to have VOTER ID however the needs to be systems in place for persons who may not have their ID card, for whatsoever reason, on the Election day. An alternative PLAN B arrangement should be made mandatory to ensure that NONE WILL BE DISENFRANCHISED.

I’m neither blue nor red. When it comes to politics I tend to lay low and just be an observer, but what I am seeing here is very troubling. I always first look at things with my spiritual glasses on, and to me something is going on behind the scenes and it worries me. It seems like a lot of labourites are under a spell, I mean they worship this man. They can’t see anything wrong with him, the man is like a god to them. I am so worried for Dominica. I will vote for someone, but when they are wrong, I call them out on it. This is breaking my heart . I won’t say anymore about what I am seeing, but Father help us!

Let us be careful people. Regardless of what our opposition is we need them to maintain a balance. Just look at what happens in places where there is no opposition. so though we may like who is in power we should not be blindly asking for a clean sweep without first considering what we would have to give up or what is at stake. Some balnace is needed. May God’s will be done in the lives of our leaders.

    2) DLP will not get quality people to run for them this time around, becuase everyone is seeing that this DLP is not working to uplift the standard of living of Dominicans.
    3) People in the diaspora will not come down to Da to vote for a DLP because it continues to keep the masses in ignorance.
    4) It is time for a new party to take over in Da.
5)Dominica has gone backwards under this administration. it is time to put a stop to this.

Why it’s possible that Labour can sweep the Polls At The next elections..

If something is bad in your home say a chair or Table etc, you either dump it if it can’t be repaired and replace it…simple..

Simply if dominicans have a heart and they really think they are human beings simply vote the Labour party Out of office..

Once citizens comment on what the opposition is doing is not the case…who makes up the opposition? isn’t folks who want a new beginning, new look a change of guard etc…

will always advocate that dominica is a fools paradise, nothing will bring about change..

it’s your democratic right to vote when elections are called so use it..is slavery still around…
does someone hold a machine to your head…

maybe God created dominica as a exp of island which will always be in chaos

Dominicans just don’t get it period, no amount of talking and hosting between you and me etc, will free their minds of the ignorance that they cherish…..

At the end of the day, Dcans must realize that this airplane called Dominica is headed straight for a collision with Morne Diable Lotin and the impact will be catastrophic. The people in opposition that have been recycled and cannot win a seat (we know who they are) should step aside before its too late and those competent enough should step up.

We can say what we want about about Eddison and Spags but they have shown that they are able to win decisively. That is two seats that Skerrit cannot and will NOT win under his “clean sweep strategy”. Those seat cannot and will not be taken by DLP..period!

Therefore, the Freedom Party and UWP need to put partisan politics aside and allow only one candidate from either parties to run against the DLP in the chosen constituencies. After the election, they can now merge into a New Political Party – Movement For National Unity (MNU)- for the good of Dominica.

Some of the Potential Candidates I see:
    1. Johnson Bannis or Joseph “Charlie” Challenger (C/Bruce)
    2. Ashton Reviere (Portsmouth)
    3. Matt Peltier or Carlisle Jno. Baptiste (Soufriere/ Pte. Mitchel)
    4. Barrow (Former Health Insp- Grand Bay)
    5. Thompson Fontaine (Laplaine)
    6. Dr. Kervin Ferarra (St. Joseph)

“nobody knows the day. nobody knows the hour”. ok god the almighty.

an electoral and political structure huh? oh…u mean the same one that allowed 2 ministers to contest elections with dual citizenships? (they winning the appeal never proved it to be untrue. it was stated that the opposition simply failed to prove their case). or maybe the one where dominica has a population of 69000+, with 20000+ under the age of 18, which means they cant be registered voters, yet the amount of registered voters is still 65000+. OMG…u pple r so silly its laughable. except i cant laugh because when pple like u tolerate these kinda things, i live in dominica so i pay for it too.

there is an opposition, no matter how small, it still means that there is someone speaking for those of us who actually have a brain and its in use, and this government still get away with their corruption. right now their goal is to wipe out the other voice, now u tell me which law, or which constitution (ooops! almost forgot..there’s none) that is gonna stop them fr doing what they want.

There are thousands of other qualified Dcans who can run this country with integrity. Problem is, if they only insinuate their intention to run against the DLP, victimization of them, their family and friends are guaranteed. Hence the silence in Dominica. The DLP has been and continue to be very very successful in creating a “pariah” state where friends, neighbors, co-workers and family are now spying on each other for the most high PM and his cabal.

So the whole idea that no one else can run the country is UTTER RUBBISH, to quote a famous past police commissioner. If in a country of 70,000 people there is only one person capable of leading then heaven help us all and generations to come.

The million dollar question: Will Dominicans agree for Skerritt and the DLP Gov’t. to call any General elections without respecting the “Independent” Electoral Commission’s request?

That body has the mandate by our laws to conduct elections. That body is still waiting for the money from the Minister of Finance to produce Voter ID cards and to clean up the “dirty’ Voters list.

The OAS and CARICOM observers at the 2009 elections recommended that Voter ID Cards and cleaning the voters’ list should be done to ensure elections are Free and Fair.

The Electoral Commission want to do its work to ensure Free and Fair elections, but a spoke has been put in its wheels.

I foresee serious problems in our Dominica. Are Free and fair elections becoming a thing of the past? Electoral Laws should be disrespected? So all institutions falling down? Political influence take over all those “independent bodies?”

Dominicans are you experimenting with dictatorship? The history of Haiti under Papa and Baby Doc rule mean nothing to us black people? In the land of abundant water the fools are thirsty. The greedy and wealthy reign with protectors and defenders in all sectors of society grovelling to belong.

What kind of debt is being put on the heads of our children and those not yet born when the borrowing is not used to produce jobs so the only way to pay the interest on the debt not even the debt itself is more taxes on the few working people who continue to migrate because they have had enough. You pay 15% VAT plus income tax and still people don’t get paid on time…all you poor people “guayeing”,while a few chosen ones swimming in “dough”.Unemploment between 20%-30%and instead of demanding jobs you more interested in you can give better “maypwe”.Little St.Kitts with half our population is light years ahead of us…we are the most beautiful yet the last cacarat development wise yet were proud of that…this is so sad….POOR CINDERELLA YOU STILL WAITING FOR THOSE SHOES!

well mr. skerit you want a clean sweep? you can get a clean sweep by starting to get the voters id card in order. Are you prepare to do that, that is the only way election can be free and just. WHY ARE YOU AFRAID OF GETTING ELECTORIAL REFORM?

    • STILL
      March 13, 2013

In all the years of independence Dominica has never had free and fair elections it can be assumed based on your statement. if every other administration has gotten away with not Having free and fair elections do you think he will want to change it. Why does the opposition always appear to be lining up excuses before the fact. In my opinion it would have been a more effective use of the last four years seeing the ground work for the up coming election getting their slate of candidates ready introducing them to the people allowing the communities know who they are what they stand for and why they should be allowed to hold office. I have not voted for this government and won’t but i won’t vote for the opposition either. The way they present themselves and the hypocrisy that they show is not helping their cause. They attempt the same actions that the government uses to secure votes then turns around and complain. From bringing people into the country to offering financial incentives to vote for them. Now please don’t try to defend these actions i personally know they happened and the persons involved and it is wrong on both sides. But then again we only complain if we loose.. It’s time for Dominicans to wake up and take charge of their destiny and stop allowing politicians to play games with then and this beautiful country.

Typical… We now want democracy on or own terms. The man is free to ask for a clean sweep. it’s up to the people to decide. If they do what is wrong with that. Is the peoples choice and their lack of faith in the opposition’. Instead of waiting for that to happen the opposition should stop complaining about political speech and rhetoric and focus on Being BETTER prepared for the next election.

      March 13, 2013

I quite agree with you. But a vibrant opposition, not a lazy and useless one. An opposition with a plan, an opposition to instill hope for the future. I not saying I voting Skerrit, but if not Skerrit then who.

It is one thing to say Skerrit this and that, but election day will come and whose name will you put your X by, when was the last time did the opposition inspire anyone. For the past years all we know are cases being lost and callers on the radio. Truly, what else? If not DLP then who?

BOY LOOK ACTION START!!!!!!!!!!!! Nuff free sewo…

The sad thing is… while I don’t agree with the way the PM manages the party or the government, he might just get his wish. There is no viable alternative party to the DLP at this time in Dominica. The PM is in a excellent political position right now. Instead of wasting time on the same strategy for the past 15 years, the UWP should have revamped the party and been on the ground working with the people. This has not happened. This talk show strategy failed before and will fail again. It is the same captive audience. Say what you want about Skerrit, but you have to admit he is a brilliant political strategist who is poised to win the upcoming elections unless something dramatic happens or some new party rises from the ashes. I respect Eddison’s political prowess and longevity as well. However, he cannot do it alone and he has a weak unstable team. Skerrit keeps a good grip on the reigns of power in his party. A Mark of a good leader is to always have a strong proxy and groom a successor. Mr James has failed dearly here.

It is all quite interesting and laughable. A Much Ado About Nothing…

While I believe UWP wasted time and resources on dragging you in court after you conceded you had French citizenship and renounced it, I find you to be very arrogant and overbearing. When you call people who oppose you derogatory names how do you expect to convince them you are their better choice. Remember a smart politician strokes the feathers of those in his camp, but rolls out the red carpet to those he wants to lure. These ramblings are immature, uncultured, classless and pure crass. Peeping Tom, you agent of deception! How do you conclude that Blue- Blue is wishing for skerritt’s personal demise?. The man has asked for a clean sweep of the UWP, does that mean that he wishes for the personal demise of all those who support the UWP? No one hates skerritt, on the contrary. However we have heard persons like yourself express open hatred towards Mr. James and that is the only reason that many persons do not like the UWP. They are so consumed with hatred for one man. Why because like they do for skerritt now, they made a “god”/”goddess” of Eugenia and couldn’t fathom that he had the ba… to take her on much more to get her out of office. Why GENERAL ELECTIONS two years before it is due with a majority of 18 to 3?
The economy is in a mess, unemployment is rising, crime increasing, businesses are closing down and Krazy Koconut is up for sale on Safe Haven website, yet the Prime Minister is only interested in revenge for three years His OECS Supreme Court took to deliver a judgement, which in my opinion should have been given the day after the petition was filed.
Can Dominica survive the divisiveness of another election campaign. The Prime Minister’s message should be one of National Unity, bringing the country together and putting the people to work for the next two years.
But to go for revenge is distasteful and childish.
My heart bleeds for Dominica because there are no signs of positive energy coming from our leaders.
When are we going to see COUNTRY FIRST instead of the aggression of two warring Tribes.
Enough is Enough, Dominica needs to pause and reflect but alas the venom continues to spill from the mouths of the politicians who are looking for Revenge and Blood.

Since you are a Dominican American itis the same process like when we travel to the US and other people country we do whatever work we find that the nationals will do. It is a matter of survival for us because this is not our country. It is the same concept as haitians coming to dominican and finding a way to survive. People can start businesses but the country had a lot more issues that the prime minister needs to address. The country is ina bad shape and he has to take most of the responsibility.

is it not their fault to lessen customs burden when enterprenurs try to import for resale?

is it not their fault that foreign investors don’t pay a dime of income tax for 20 yrs after that they ready to sell for abandon ship, or they cannot give a tax amnesty like St.Lucia did?

Is it not their fault that they created a mentality of handout instead of giving people the avenue and means to fend for themselves

Since when we in league with the US when they were good we were still bad. what is our excuse? The labour party has been in power for 15 years and in that time has not come up with anything sustainable to grow the economy, that is not acceptable! if your ambition in life is to sit down accept your fate and beg people that is not mine, nobody was not more labour than me but that is foolishness!! Now if the opposition believes Skerrit is joking let them continue to play Hide and Seek.
Will Dominicans give such an incompetent Government another five years?
Now is the time for a DREAM TEAM of Patriotic, Qualified and Competent Dominicans to come together to Rescue Dominica from this imminent Dictatorship.
Can Dominica afford another Five Years of KELVAR DARROUX, SAM MARTIN, JOHNSON DRIGO, ASHTON GRANEAU, IVOR STEPHENSON, COLLIN MCINTYRE, THE ONE FROM COLIHAUT, JUSTINA CHARLES, MATTHEW WALTER, REGINALD AUSTRIE, THE DOC FROM PETITE SAVANNE, CHARLES SAVARIN? I will stop there.
Dominica’s plight over the last three years has nothing to do with the Court Case, because during that time Skerrits men have done very well, Blackmore and all the others, Emanuel Nantan, have built their mansions and are floating in honey, whereas all local businesses are ooing through hell.
Skerrit should hold the Justice System responsible for the three years of his so-called stress.
Even Krazy Koconut is now up for sale. Tobacco factory close down, Aerial Tram close down, a recently opened factory is moving to another OECS ISLAND.
All Dominica needs is a DREAM TEAM Of THIRTEEN real Men AND wOMEN and the Labor Party will be HISTORY, but Michael Astaphan and Eddison James must realize that they cannot cut it.
In any case new elections without cleansing of the Electoral List will be a travesty and BOYCOTTED. Skerrit may get his wish but this may be the price to pay for JUSTICE.
VOLUNTEERS are needed for the DREAM TEAM.

Of course, they have a back up plan. It is called “more of the same!” They have spent the past decade focusing on one man, working up sentiments against one man, trying to tear down one man, vilifying one man….one man! As if Dominica’s parliament is one man. Their only record of work for the past decade is to attack one man. Now, at the near 11th hours, what other plan can they have but o run around like chickens wondering which direction to go?

It is going to be more of the same from the UWPwee: Criticize the same institutions that they which to manage, tear down the PM, rely on a record in government that has no relevance to today’s global economic climate, and repeat hollow slogans.

The UWPwee died a long tome ago.
