“I will not be part of any primary” warns Reginald Austrie

Parliamentary representative for the Cottage constituency, Reginald Austrie, has sent a strong warning to all would-be challengers that he intends to be the labour party candidate for that seat in the next general election.

“I want to sound a warning that anybody can come, everybody can come, Madam speaker. It’s a democracy, you can come. I have no problem with that,” Austrie stated during his contribution to the 2013-2014 budget debate on Tuesday evening.

“When I read my report card, you read your report card and I want to tell you something Madam Speaker, I not in no primary, I graduate from that already. I not in no primary, Madam Speaker. I graduate from primary school, I graduate from secondary school and I graduate from college in Guyana in the jungle. That’s where I went to school, Madam Speaker – in the jungle. So, I shall not be part of no primary. I can tell you that, Madam Speaker. There are powers that can decide otherwise but I will not be part of any primary in the Cottage constituency,” the government minister stated.

Reports surfaced recently that Government Senior Information Officer, Mervin Paul, was interested in becoming the labour party candidate for Cottage in the next general election. Paul has not denied those reports saying instead in a recent media interview, that it’s a matter for labour party supporters in Cottage to decide.

But Austrie has made it clear that any one who wants to challenge and beat him in the Cottage constituency has to “come strong; you have to come really strong.”

“Everything that happen in that constituency, me that do it, for the last fifteen years…everything, Madam Speaker, everything,” he argued

The minister listed a number of projects that he had undertaken in the constituency including sea defence works and other infrastructural development projects and admonished potential challengers to steer clear of criticizing his performance.

“If men going to fight me by bad talking me, then we have a problem. You come there clean and so on, you can come, anybody can come. I have no problem with that but if you want to come in there and dirty me, Madam Speaker, then I’ll send some dirt back at you, Madam Speaker and is who can dirty more,” he warned.

The message from the 15 year veteran parliamentarian was emphatic. “I’m the duly elected Parl Rep. I intend to contest the next election and I intend to win the next election for the Dominica Labour Party ticket.”

Come on Reggie, you need not be afraid of the idea of Primary elections whether those were to be held in your constituency or any other. If you are convinced of your record as a parliamentary representative and a minister of government for 15 years, then a primary is a system of democracy that should be welcomed by you or any others participating in the electoral process. Welcome the challenge and be a pioneer for change at the same time my friend. Good luck!!!!

Ask reginald Austrie apart from the welfare mendicancy strategy of free bus fare for students even those that can afford, what has he done for education? How many constituents apart from his children has gone off and graduated from University? He doesnt want any educated person to challenge him? well it seems that Paul has created a ripple or a Tsunami in his pool… Reggie move….

Yes Mr Reggie, you are boasting of all what you did for your constituency, but apparently you forgot that Grange is part of the Cottage constituency. So, with that said, what have you done for Grange, not just lately, as the song says, but at all? Deceased Alleyne Carbon must be turning in his grave!

    You are right Minister Austrie. You went to school in the Jungles of Guyana. With that type of attitude you could not have entered a University. This is real Jungle behavior that you displayed in the House. I couldnt decipher what jungle animal you represented;

I would like to know which college he is talking about. The University of Guyana and the Cyril Potter College of Education are both in Greater Georgetown. That area is certainly no jungle. In fact, it is home to the CARICOM Secretariat.

80% of the project that has been done in the Cottage Constituency in the past fifteen years had very little to do with Reginald Austrie, including repairs to the Savanee Paille Primary School, Refurbishment at cabrits, Transformation of the old Public Convenience at Deriere La rosin, Tourist entertainment booth at purple Turtle, sheds and sits of Waitukubuli trail, Water project at Capuchin, and the List goes on and on… Reggie needs to step aside and allow for a more level headed, more genuine and progressive, less selfish representative. Chaaaa!

If the speaker of the house can go after a member for wearing a purple shirt jack my god a speaker should be able to tell any member to speak standard english. What about sticking to the budget discussion. What relevance is Reginald/Mervin Beef to our budget debate. That is a Labor party matter and the imbalance speaker should have stop Reginald.

Through all of this though why is Mervin challenging Reginald. is it because Mervin is unhappy with Reggie’s performance? If so then isn’t that the standard report card for the current administration? What is interesting though is that Mervin hasn’t left cottage 26 years ago yet he thinks that lagoon, Cottage, Clifton and capuchin people will embrace him. If they do brother we can call

    Hi Reginald,

It is rather unfortunate that you would address the house and people of Dominica in such a despicable manner. As a minister of government, you should consider practicing self control and proper decorum sir. This is not 1980, the whole world is reading and watching. May I suggest that you go back to school, this time for anger management, english, and self control. Your recent behavior suggest that you have NO respect for yourself, your office, your wife, children, your parents, and constituents.

Reginald, THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LIFE IS CHANGE!! Change happens, life goes on sir, DON’T SWEAT IT!

To be warlike? You are not working to the people’s satisfaction, so be humble and do the right thing. I hope these comments give you an idea of what the right thing is.

What have you done for the young people? Has the livelihood of the people of the Cottage constituency improved either socially or economically?
You are just raging because finally someone has showed genuine interest in developing this constituency that is basically dormant.

Democracy …..hmm interesting but I will not be a part of any primary!!!! He says. If the people decide that there should be a primary, who are you boycott it. You cannot just force yourself on them. Apparently people have no say in what happens…………. it is DICTATED to them.

But then again we have allowed so many things to be forced on us in this country that politicians have decided to transform the house where policies are to be debated for the development of the country into a rumshop argument arena about who can get more dirty.

To that I say………fill the house chamber with mud and let all the PIGILITIANS roll in it and get dirty including the speaker because she is in charge and did not find its fit to put an end to this nonsense. The opposition should roll in it to because with a rant like that even if it was directed at a member within their party the opposition should have shown some example and excused themselves from the house. The way is see it is if you are actually better ……demonstrate through action that you are better.

On another note why cant people question your performance? This is what should be brought under the microscope during the elections PERFORMANCE not personality which seem to be the driving force of all debates in Dominica’s politics.

Lastly could somebody please tell me about the College in Guyana in the jungle. You cannot take political pressure, get out of it.

Reginald, my advice to you is to get out of politics, because you don’t want to account for nothing you do, and you too arrogant, and don’t want the Dominicans who put you in power to ask you no question. YOU ARE TOTALLY OUT OF ORDER.

This is a disgrace. When members of the House should be discussing and arguing for meaningful programs to push this country forward, Mr. Austrie is addressing an issue that is to be dealt with in the chambers of, and by the internal politics of, the Labour party. This shows the level of self-interest Mr. Austrie represents. Even more disturbing is being allowed to make those remarks without any rebuke by the speaker to address the matter at hand and not engage in internal party politics while on the floor, unless such rebuke was left out by DNO.

Did the Madam Speaker take note of this pronouncement from Minister Austrie? Did the Minister learn jungle warfare or guerilla tactics in the Guyana jungle? Was his outburst in parliament the first salvo so [he] will not be part of no primary? This is really amazing.

Minister Austrie’s outburst in the Honourable House is replete with everything that’s wrong with with our current situation and shows how the line has become so blurred between government and Labour Party. Mark you, the occasion was not a Labour Party Constituency meeting or Caucus, but the Minister’s contribution to the national budget debate in the Honourable House. And, there is no indication that the same Madam Speaker, who earlier this week sent another Parliamentarian home for wearing a purple shirt jack to the Honourable House reprimanded the Minister’s outburst. Where’s the House protocol?

The basic principle of democracy is “of the people, for the people, by the people.” Ted Kennedy had been a very powerful US Senator for more than 30 years but he had to face a party challenger at a primary in 2000. As the minister stated, “everything that happen in that constituency, me that do it for the last fifteen years.” Why then is he fearful?

Is Mr. Austrie going to let his record speak for itself and fear no more or is he going to copy his boss and party leader and declare that no democracy, no law, no constitution will keep me back? …

If your record is that good then just let the people vote on that and we will see the outcome. Also Mr Austrie you said that you went to school in the jungle in Guyana well come election time you will have a lot of time on your hand to go back in the jungle to learn how to speak as a public official . Cottage doesnt belong to you sir! We live in a democracy and you have to abide by democratic rules. So if the people of Cottage want a primary, you jolly well have to give it to them or YOU, sir, need to get out of the politics business. Apparently, you are in the wrong profession. The jungle speech was a speech of “pure ignorance” by the minister. I observed the ministers behavior and it is not no good example to our youths. They kept interrupting one another and casting remarks.

  74. Really?
    July 31, 2013

This is very disturbing. these men are supposed to be the best we have to represent the best interests of the people they represent. Isn’t it supposed to be a learning experience for young people. And you are in the HOUSE, using english at the level of an illiterate? How does this happen?
Clearly their interests and that of the country are different. Its all about “ME”.
Sadly, our people are okay with this kind of behavior because we do not yet realize that WE hold power. Politicians shouldn’t be holding the people to ransom. They shouldnt be allowed to speak to us in any tone any manner. Our hands put them there and our hands can take them out.
But we have role reversal and we are fearing our politicians , who admit to going to school in the jungle. Do you know what that says. He’s as dumb as dumb comes. No Dominica, we have to do better than this.

Mr. Austrie, while I applaud you for your immense contribution to your constituents and the DLP, I must remind you that the people determine the fate of any political party. Mr. Austrie, you should allow the people to make that decision. That was totally uncalled for in the House. A political party should Always exemplify unity. Situations as such should be dealt with behind close doors. If someone else has an interest and he has alot of people on his side, then let the people decide, if you have performed and you are very confident, then, you should welcome a primary. I admire the fact that you have never surrendered to the opponents, and have stood behind your leader through thick and thin, however, there is no place for division in the camp. Wait a minute nah.. I am confused.. Is he in parliament… or on a political platform. Mr. Austrie sir ma gwa ca! Respect the Honorouble House. Watch your tone. Madame Speaker won’t tell you that but will instruct Hon. Norris Prevost to leave the House to go change his shirt..LMAO!

Ministers respect the Honorable House.. It’s not a fish market place.

So even if Mervin Paul runs for the constituency…who cares anyway. Only You should though..!

LOOOOL does Mr. Austrie think before he speaks damn for one who claims to have graduated college in the Guyanese “jungle” you sure speak like it ….There should be something in place that prevents people from running without proper education and public speaking capabilities… every where else in the Caribbean has it that’s why they ALL are ahead of us ..until that is done we will continue to fall short in everything…until i hang my head in embarrassment and utter disgust..what a shame
