Scottish appeal court judges have declared Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend parliament in the run-up to the October Brexit deadline as unlawful.
According to the Guardian, the three judges, chaired by Lord Carloway, Scotland’s most senior judge, overturned an earlier ruling that the courts did not have the power to interfere in the prime minister’s political decision to prorogue parliament.
Lawyers acting for 75 opposition MPs and peers argued Johnson’s decision to suspend parliament for five weeks was illegal and in breach of the constitution, as it was designed to stifle parliamentary debate and action on Brexit.
The judges failed to issue an interdict, or injunction, ordering the UK government to reconvene parliament, prompting a row over whether the decision meant MPs could go back to the House of Commons.
Scottish law is a bit odd, though, and this particular ruling doesn’t mean much if it’s overturned by the UK Supreme Court, as seems likely.
What a shady character this man Johnson is. If it wasn’t for the wrong colour I would swear he is Skerrits brother.
Omg!!!!! when will our justice system in this part of the world going to hold this wanna-b self declared god responsible and accountable for his illegal actions. Well of course he did say “no Law not even the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica”
Mr. Johnson
What a laugh Theresa may must be having. Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. You thought it was a piece of cake didn’t you?
Saunders, why do you feel compelled to comment on the UK’s useless and ignorant PM who will be gone long before Xmas. You should rather comment on that sorry corrupt excuse of a PM that keeps hanging on in DA like a bad smell. And yes, I’m referring to your boyfriend. If he was to be PM of the UK he by now would have already spend at least 10 years of a 30 year sentence for corruption in government and misappropriation of state funds, entering into deals with third countries without informing parliament and interfering with the courts of the country. So spare us your hypocrisy!!
Thank god for having courts that implement the law of land rigorously, rather than listen or be bias to a despot that believes he can trample on it. Remember what Skerrit said, no law and no constitution…
That was a decision by the highest court in Scottland. An English court had earlier ruled in Johnson’s favor. It will now be settled by the supreme court for a final decision.
