Brazilian man turns up alive at his own wake

Gilberto Araujo

The family of a Brazilian man who thought he was dead, got the shock of their lives when he turned up pretty much alive at his own wake.

According to Reuters, many of those attending the wake fainted while others fled the scene in fear.

The whole matter started earlier this week when the family of 41-year-old Gilberto Araujo, whom they had not seen for about four months, mistakenly identified a murdered local man at a morgue as him.

Reports indicate the murdered man, a car washer, closely resembled Araujo, also a car washer.

Family and friends in the town of Alagoinhas in Bahia state were gathered around the body at the wake when he showed up.

Apparently a friend had spotted him on the streets and had told him of his “death.”

Upon learning this Araujo first tried to call an an acquaintance at the wake to inform them he was alive, but his call was dismissed as a cruel prank.

“I said ‘guys, I’m alive, pinch me,'” Reuters reported Araujo as telling his grief-stricken relatives when he turned up at the wake.

His mother, shopkeeper Maria Menezes, said some of those attending the wake fainted while others ran away in terror.

“It was a fright … I’m very happy because what mother has a son that they say is dead then turns up alive?” she said.

The corpse of the other man has since been returned to the morgue.

You will probably run for your life. Some have been so shocked that they did just that. Being aware that this is not the first time it has happened I would only be shocked and in the end probably amused; happy too that the person is alive.
Someone was lax in not properly identifying or providing proper identification of the remains of the person who passed on and who was being buried.
Who should compensate the family for the costs of funeral preparation, the funeral service and pain and suffering as they mourned his loss?
This is cause for a Court case, no doubt against the doctor who performed the autopsy, the medical practitioner, nurses and the funeral home. Someone or some people were to be blamed for this major error, a negligent one. The case would be a lengthy one.

Being comical is healthy as long as it makes sense and is clean comedy, jokes and writing; likewise laughing.
It depends how one sees it. It is good that they made you laugh heartily. We do need to laugh occasionally. After all, our nature is made up of also laughter. We cannot always be serious. I have considered there is a time and place for everything, to laugh and to be serious, depending on the circumstances.

    1 Thessalonians 4:14-17

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.[a]

15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

This situation is totally different. He did not die. However, in effect, there are some instances in ancient days that God allowed souls to return to briefly speak to their loved ones. I have read about them and believe them. They are true stories as related by those who experienced them. However, there may be few such instances in this era.
There are times we dream of our departed loved ones. While it may be said that they are in our subconscious mind, nevertheless, they may be true dreams. I have had a few such dreams and they were happy and peaceful ones. Upon reflection of those dreams, I concluded that they are happy with the Lord.
In their own way, they return to thank their family/friends for their prayers and other kindnesses shown while they were sick. In other respects, to persevere in the Lord by worshipping Him and performing acts of love and being faithful to the end.

Strange things occur. Wonders never cease. That is life.
Let us consider this. We are at a funeral mourning the loss of a relative, friend, co-worker, associate or neighbor. Then, the supposedly departed shows up. I visualize that is enough to shock those who are attending the funeral, give others a heart attack, aneurism and cause others to run away in fright. Consider the sleepless nights and nightmares.
No after funeral reception for sure. Or “Once I was lost and now I’m found…”
This is not the first time I have heard this. Sometime ago there was also a similar article on DNO. There are times that mourners found out that the wrong body was buried and/or either cremated.
This has also occurred in Canada but worst in the U.S. It could be a real shock and scandal. Funeral Homes in those countries were sued for this error. Some human beings are prone to many major errors. The supposedly departed man should sue them too.

It’s unfortunate, that this man was away from his family and did not keep in touch at least to let them know his whereabouts. This scenario strengthens the importance of communication. Sometimes being small is good because if its in DA, someone would have known his whereabouts, I suppose the face was disfigured so it was difficult to identify. I probably would run when if I was there too. OMG, can u imagine what this scene looked like? Hmmmm

So the real dead man family ain’t missing him at all? WOW!

    • October 25, 2012

People go missing all the time. It is possible the dead man’s family was accustomed of him going away and staying away for long periods of time. They should have gone to the morgue just as the family of Roberto did; however, Roberto’s family should have known the difference because you don’t identify corpse only by looking at their faces. All-in-all, sad story on both ends. I wonder why the corpse was returned to the morgue and not proceeded to burial since everything was almost complete. Why didn’t Roberto stay away until after the burial. I don’t believe Roberto called anyone. You don’t stay away for four months, then decide to pay a visit on the day of your wake. Did he ever thought of his mother during that period. If your call was thought to be a prank, why didn’t go in person? You know where your family lives.

If anyone believes the following statement I don’t know what to say other than Roberto congratulations.

Apparently a friend had spotted him on the streets and had told him of his “death.”

Upon learning this Araujo first tried to call an an acquaintance at the wake to inform them he was alive, but his call was dismissed as a cruel prank.

“I said ‘guys, I’m alive, pinch me,’” Reuters reported Araujo as telling his grief-stricken relatives when he turned up at the wake.

  20. October 24, 2012

“I said ‘guys, I’m alive, pinch me”<<<<<News article.

Those words above sound a lot like Jesus' words, after His resurrection, when He told His disciples: "Behold My hands and My feet, that it is Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have" Luke 24: 39

While I am st it, that verse above is what taught me to understand how Jesus the Man and the God of Spirit are "One" and the reason Jesus tells us: "I am in the Father and the Father is in Me".

It means that God Almighty, who is Christ, Eternal Spirit, put on the clothing of a human being–flesh and bones–He, Himself, being the Son, the offspring of His Person, Love. All of this was done for the sake of Salvation and Reconciliation of mankind to Him, by their faith in His crucifixion, death, and resurrection.

Anyway that is not what the story is about. And so I say that it is good to know that a loved one, whom we believed to be dead, shows up in himself with flesh and bones–not a ghost.

        @ugh

Your name is enough to reveal your stupidity. That is why the apostle Paul teaches us that the “carnal mind” is an enemy of God–existing in darkness without knowledge of Him–Life and its glorious aspects of living.

You are one of the many with that carnal state of mind, dead as a sleeping bat; so it is no wonder you see what I wrote as “BS” I take it that you mean “bull shit”. What a sorry person you are along with your sorry existence in this world!

ps its not kosher to quote scripture and then tell one of gods children their existence is sorry….like i said bs aka bull shit and jesus would be proud….so lame lol

Now this Gilberto dude done mess up the Christian resurrection theory. Jesus was suppose to be the only man to rise from the dead. But then again I hear Some have seen dead people working coco fields in Haiti.

    • October 24, 2012

Except that Jesus truly suffered, died and was buried, but that man was never dead. It is just that no one knew his where abouts for four months, and he was mistaken as a dead man in the morgue.

Don’t forget that they sent the dead body back to the morgue. So this story has nothing to do with the Christian Resurrection theory. Even I noticed that the alived man spokes a few words about himself, just like our resurrected Jesus did.

      • noko
        October 25, 2012

@Lizavier. Yam was making a joke. no need for some unnecessary explanation

      • October 25, 2012

        @Budman

I did not see the sense of humor in that comment of “Yam”. I see that comment full of sarcasm, that is much different from a joke.

You might see it as a joke–but many people do not believe in Jesus, much more to accept His resurrection–again, there is nothing amusing in that comment above–even if I myself added a bit of humor to it.

If this is true, it could be their restless bodies/souls. They did not die in the Lord and are restless. They do not want to leave the world and go to Hell for now anyway. What about those who throughout their adult lifetime performed obeah and harmed others also terminally? At the end of time, on Judgment Day they and Satan will be thrust down into Hell for good, for all eternity.
I also read that Satan allows them to get out of Hell to torment and tempt people. You do know that there are haunted houses and for good reasons. You may have either heard, read about or seen movies to that effect.
Some years ago a Toronto TV Station had programs of the ghosts of Toronto, of Vancouver, etc. I viewed some of them. Rather interesting but true.
You would be surprised to know that some of those people/souls who were seen by others as some employees, restaurant patrons in those establishments as also in homes/apartments and the strange happenings, some of them were prominent, rich people.
The entire world consists of them. They are those who lived a life of godlessness and wickedness, worshipping man/woman, money, material goods and possessions – living capitalist and materialistic lives, being haughty and proud, looking down on some others especially the poor, those who were in a lower position than they, possessing a higher and greater-than-thou attitude, placing themselves on a self-acclaimed throne, denying God, suppressing him and his people from even mentioning his Most Holy Name, scoffing at those who pay homage to God and who practiced their faith, calling them all sorts of derogatory names…and the list goes on… There are also many such people as this in the world. Thank God life is temporary.
If you use your imagination you could find other reasons for the misery of their unhappy, restless souls.
It is better to do good than bad, in words and deeds for one day all must give God an account of the allotted time which He gave us and for what we did with them. All will receive their just recompense as they deserve, Heaven or Hell. No one should be presumptuous and think that they are so good. God is not blind, deaf or sleeping. He knows and reads hearts, what is imbedded in them. He is not deceived.
This is the consolation for those who are also especially persecuted and harassed for practicing their faith and informing others accordingly and more…
My Rosary and Holy Water are not far away from me. I keep a Rosary in my purse and I also carry a little bottle of Holy Water with me in addition to having it in my home. If need be, I love to give some of them to my Catholic Christian counterparts. Reciting the Rosary and blessing oneself and family gives much peace and strength. Praise be to God!

really dunno what i’d do. but one question. after 4 months howz that they gather around the body having a wake. is that how long they keep a body before burial? I know the mother is happy to know her son is alive after finding out that the body is not that of her son. papamet oh. i wonder where mr was boy..so many questions. :?:

He was missing for 4 months. Then I guess the authourites found a murdered body that resembled him then the family was brought in to identify the body but wrongly identiefied the body as being his. Not sure either what I would have done! 8-O

      @awawii

No, they were not keeping a wake for four months. The story says that the man in question, was wrongly identified as a murdered man, at the morgue. That must be the time when the wake ritual began–for no one would have known he was dead, even if he was missing for four months.
