CAIRO, EGYPT (BNO NEWS) — Prosecutors on Tuesday extended the detention of former President Hosni Mubarak for another 15 days after questioning him earlier, the al-Ahram newspaper reported.

A prosecution team arrived to the Sharm El Sheikh International Hospital where the former leader is hospitalized. They questioned him over the investigation into a deadly crackdown on protesters and corruption.

Mubarak has been under arrest in a hospital in the Red Sea town of Sharm el-Sheikh since suffering a minor heart attack on April 12. The questioning session was also attended by his lawyer Farid El Deeb.

Also on Tuesday, Prosecutor-General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud extended the detention of Mubarak’s sons, Alaa and Gamal, for another 15 days pending further investigation into charges against them.

Alaa and Gamal Mubarak are accused of profiteering, wasting public funds and illegally accumulating wealth. The two brothers were imprisoned in south Cairo for the duration of the investigation.

The 82-year-old ousted president is accused of ordering the killing of protesters in Tahrir Square during the January 25 Revolution as well as many abuse of power and illicit profiteering counts.

Mubarak ruled Egypt in a 30-year-long regime which began in 1981. He stepped down this year after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.
