Ghana church official says poverty, unemployment ’cause’ homosexuality

ACCRA (BNO NEWS) — A Ghanaian church official on Friday warned local youth about homosexuality and said it is largely ’caused’ by poverty and unemployment, local media reported on Saturday.

Reverend Dr. Bugri Nagbo, the Northern Regional Chairman of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, was addressing youth groups, political parties and chiefs in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region, during a peace-building seminar organized by the church.

“He said the actors (homosexuals) give their victims fat envelopes of money and assorted gifts to entice them into the act and advised the youth to beware,” the state-run Ghana News Agency said in a news report. Nagbo claimed same-sex relations are usually between an older, richer person and a poor young person.

Meanwhile, in the fishing town of Winneba in southern Ghana, psychologist Alhasan Baba Mamudu warned youth to get rid of homosexuality because ‘it could destroy their lives’ in the future. He also called on parents, Christian and Muslim leaders and the government to intensify their campaign against homosexuality.

The law in Ghana makes consenting homosexual acts a misdemeanor, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgenders (LGBT) face widespread discrimination as well as police harassment and extortion attempts. Gay men in prison are often subjected to sexual and other physical abuse.

In late July, Western Region Minister Paul Evans Aidoo ordered the arrest of all homosexuals in the region and tasked security agencies to ‘smoke out’ all citizens suspected to be engaging in homosexual acts. “All efforts are being made to get rid of these people in the society,” he was cited as saying by local radio station Joy FM.

In June 2010, more than 1,000 people protested in the city of Takoradi against reports of gay and lesbian activities in their city. There are no registered LGBT organizations in the African country.

It is not unusual for homosexual men to offer boys money to have sex if they know the boys are disadvantaged by poverty.

Some young men now working as male prostitutes began this way.

Boys are not only enticed into homosexual activity by offers of money. Older men frequently offer them cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, drugs, or give them gifts, take them to games, or on trips. Parents should know who their children – both boys and girls – are with and what they are doing. Be mindful if the child has money that is difficult to account for. Watch out for gift items you don’t know the source of.

Homosexuals are not “born that way” regardless of what they tell you. But boys who are introduced to homosexual activity by an older man are more apt to become homosexuals.

Some boys who have been sexually molested by an older man suffer later in life from depression. Some develop problems with alcohol or drugs. Some commit suicide.

It was encouraging to see Rev. Dr. Bugri Nagbo speak out on the relationship between poverty and homosexuality. When I read the headline I thought, “No, this cannot be.” But when I read the article I saw the connection. It is logical reasoning. But it is more than logic. It is happening.

I appreciate psychologist Aihasan Mamudu’s strong statements from a professional perspective. Action must be taken. There is no time for diplomacy. We lost the war in Canada against this onslaught of evil (at least for the time being) because we did not have enough men like Nagbo and Mamudu.

I encourage people to know where their candidates stand on homosexuality and other moral issues at election time. If they don’t tell you ASK them! If they don’t make it an issue YOU make it an issue! Vote for those who will give you laws or let you keep laws that are in line with the Word of God and the timeless laws of God’s righteousness!

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

Thank God for political leaders who make laws that honor the Word of God and for the police who enforce those laws. As Christians we believe God has delegated to civil authorities the responsibility to give us laws that reflect His will and to see that they are obeyed or let people suffer the consequences. We are to obey the civil authorities. As an ordained minister of the church I must remember that the police officer is also God’s minister (servant) with a job to do which includes arresting me if necessary! (Romans 13:1-4)

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.
