Some Caribbean governments will be anxiously watching the unfolding developments in Libya.
St Lucia’s Foreign Minister Rufus Bousquet says the march to democracy in the Middle East and North Africa is likely to impact on investment projects in the OECS sub-region.
Mr Bousquet is concerned that the unrest in Libya in particular, could jeopardise several projects that were expected to benefit St Lucia and the rest of the OECS.
In the Caribbean the Grenada government last year announced that it was expecting a grant of US$1.9 million from Libya for public works projects.
That was listed as part of a $10 million package for the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.
Grenada was also expecting Libya to forgive a $6 million debt.
OECS officials had also negotiated several agreements with Libya including the opening of a Libyan embassy in St Lucia and a bank in St Kitts.
i suspect that there are some people instigating this worldly uprising in those distinct countries in order to get those leaders out,i suspect mighty America is dehind this.
this man is a mad man look how he is killing his people and skerro supports him, waiting for the next chapter the venezuelans are going to start there uprising shortly.
All our leaders in the caribbean are thinking is what we can get what we can get. They not thinking about the poor people who are being brutally killed. Is that the man we want to associate ourselves with? One who will open fire on his own people. I think he will do like Jim Jones in Jones Town: When he sees his demise, he will kill himself and everyone else. Isn’t that whom our so called pm is associated with. Birds of a feather.
Gadaffi, a close ally of mr. Chavez, associate of mr. Ahmadinajad of Iran and mr. Mugabe of Zimbabwe, whose 2001 election campaign he supported by sending him hundres of his militia – yes elite Libyan troops in Zimbabwe! He calls mr. Mugabe a very good leader, urged him not to leave office and called for him to be given a life presidency. Guess the old dictum::”
Beggars i.e. we, can not be chosers” is as valid.as “You shall be judged by the company you keep”.
They are all dictatorship brothers. They have something in common, to oppress the people and deny them their rightful freedom.
Obviously, they will be allies. As God looks on, they have suppressed the people enough. As God ordained, the time has come to oust them from their self-acclaimed pedestal, their earthly thrones of living a lavish life while the people suffer.
If we really think of this situation which is occurring in the Middle East, the people trying to oust those dictators, you will smile with also shock and amazement about that. It is not something that we in the western world of all expected to hear about and to witness on TV. Those dictators are in fear for their position and life. The people have finally had the strength turned on them. As the saying, nothing happens before its time.
They are good leaders? This is how good they are.
I am saddened that there are loss of lives. However, in order to obtain their freedom in such countries, some people will die. They are heroes. They did not die in vain.
May God assist those people and to elect a good, fair and just democratic government which will enhance their lives and the progress of their countries. This is what they are protesting about. This is why some of their own have died. Let us all pray for them and with them. May God bless them.
I vehemently refute this idosynchratic posture of the foreign minister of St. Lucia. This guy has refused to sympathize with the dying and their families out there in Lybia and seems to preoccupy himself with the fear of losing much promised aid and debt forgiveness from Lybia. That is so insensitive yet reflective of the kinds of men that serve at the highest levels throughout the Caribbean Region. Men who’s main objective to to advance their political agenda which is only secondary to their personal agenda of “POWERTISM” and wealth accumulation at the expense of the welfare of so many others both at home and abroad. It is a sad day for the region when we have embraced this pathological determination to serve in public office whilst forgeting those who are exposed to all forms of violence and abuse by these dectators the world over. SHAME SHAME SHAME on you Mr. Foreign Minister Rufus Bousquet!
rufus bousquet dont care about the sufferings of the libyan people. all he cares about is the projects his government can get from libya……. them man is a bunch of beggin, no ideas greedy ministers
NINETY-NINE DAYS FOR THE TEETH ONEDAY FOR THE WATCHMAN. SKERRITT LOOK OUT YOURS NEXT IF YOU DONT DO WHAT IS RIGHT IMMEDIATELY. WE COUNTING THE HOURS. I SURE YOUR PRESSURE UP. VENEZUELA START I HOPE YOU SEE.
Our sympathy/condolence to the beloved mothers, brothers and sisters of those who were brutally gunned down by this mad man’s regime. Behold! The day of reckoning shall come for every leader who steal, lie, plunder and suppress their people. It is rather sad that our concern is pointed more towards the donations that we receive, and not the tragedy that is caused by the donor. He is the same leader who master-minded the terror on the Pan-Am flight over Lockerbie Scotland. The God of Abraham is live and well… the time has come for deep reflection by the leaders who continue to follow the scripts of these corrupt leaders. Take heed my people! Lougaoo will continue to observe while he eats crab and Kalaloo in the neck of the Grand Bay woods.
What about the INNOCENT CITIZENS being murdered on the streets of Libya Mr. Bousquet! What about THAT!
It’s all about the mighty dollar for these guys; they forget about human lives. As a Caribbean people I always thought we were more mindful of the plight of others but that seems to be changing rather quickly these days.
@mouth of the south, it good for them, let us hope China, Venezuela, Cuba have uprising, let us see the kitten for vielle case now. Handouts & Freeness u like, take your blows.
Gouvelmen nou pasar suppoté gouvelmen ki ka fmové en place yó!!! SKerit mwen enmé’w, mè ou ni pou palé varité-la. Chevez yó ni bon l’idée mè ou pasar ni “absolute power”!!
No concern for the wellbeing of the Libyan citizens, who are being killed by their own govt. in their quest for democracy and civil liberties? No, we are worried about the “goodies” that we now may miss mout on. What does this say about the thought processes of our leaders in the Caribbean. Are we really that callous and only look for freebies all the time?
Clearly we do Dominica being a case in point.
I SUPPORT YOU CASSIE. I CAN NOW SEE WHY DOMINICANS DONT CARE ABOUT DEMOCRACY BUT ONLY ABOUT WHAT HANDOUTS THEY CAN GET. IT LOOK LIKE A CARRIBEAN THING. WHAT A SHAME. THE BIBLE REALLY SAID THAT ‘THE LOVE OF MANY WILL GROW COLD’. PEOPLE DONT CARE ABOUT THEIR BROTHERS AND SISTERS ANY MORE ONLY ABOUT MATERIAL THINGS.
alas dominica
u all like too much freeness,,,, that’s why u all will support chavez n khadafi,,,, while their people suffer u all protect them,,,,, now when the citizens raise up u all calling america name,,,, oh any country america cannot rule they will find a way to hurt them n so on,,,,, trying to completely ignore the fact that it’s the citizens who are rioting n nothing to do with the states,,,, it’s all good these guys help us but at what cost,,, it’s like buying diamond which cost the lives of hundreds of our brethren in Sierra Leone,,,, all dictators better take note,,, and all inspiring dictators better learn the lesson b4 becoming the lesson,,,, now for all of allu who will come n say america this n that,,,, i just letting allu know when shiissshhh hit the fan is N.Y mr ghadafi will run to,,,,
MOTS you need to do some more reading. Most of the revolutions have everything to do with the States.
Nearly every dictator in the Middle East with the exception of in Iran is aligned with the US. The US has no qualms about supporting dictators who oppress their people once the dictators can keep a lid on Islamic militancy and provide stability for American corporations to exploit the resources of these countries.
For you to say these revolutions have nothing to do with America show that you are greatly uninformed. Read up on the Muslim Brotherhood and Sharia Law.
Even Ghaddafi recently aligned himself with the US prior to this uprising when he decided to halt his quest to develop weapons of mass destruction, and to allow US companies to return to Libya.
Step your informed-on-the-topic game up MOTS and stop analyzing from the surface.
What are you reading my dear Sir or Madam! Most of the revolutions are because of the States? I think you are listening to what the despots are saying!! LOL.. Did you hear you boy Gadahfi today? That was pathetic! Some accusation accusing the West just like you are now doing.
You are just as clueless as MOTS. These revolutions are America’s worse nightmare.
Do you know that America gave Muhbarak in Egypt 1.5 billion US dollars a year in military aid? He was widely considered to be a puppet of the US and that was a major reason why Eqyptians hated him. Do you know that Saudi Arabia, America’s biggest ally in the middle east is ruled by a monarchy which means they don’t have a democracy?
The majority of people in the Middle East are Muslims and hate America, and therefore hate leaders who are aligned with the US. For example, the majority of the 9/11 bombers came from these same countries Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Simple-minded idiots are celebrating because they see this as a blow to Skerrit, and not looking at the big picture. The US supports these dictators because they are the only thing standing between radical Muslims and access to oil wealth which they can use to sponsor terrorism and build weapons of mass destruction.
That’s exactly what is going on in Iran right now. They’re ruled by hardline Muslims since they had their own Islamic revolution in 1979. Iran sponsored the insurgency in Iraq, provided training on building roadside bombs which killed thousands of American troops, and are trying to build a nuclear bomb.
You people need to become more informed about world events…. seriously…Will help you to gain perspective!
Anti-hate you are even more clueless, these people are fighting for their freedom period. enough of the oppression for sooooo many years. every thing under the sun comes to an end.
Another surface analyzer….
And not one of those Governments addressed the issue that for 4 decases that man has been oppressing his people, we the African liberators think that it is o.k to oppress our brothers and sisters as long as you can forgive our loans and grant us more no interest loans that we hope you will forgive in the future. It is time for us to understand that we have to walk the walk. Freedom for others should not be denied because we want to benefit from those this dictators.
Wilst one cannot be against receiving assistance from other countries, it would be naive to believe there is no counterpart to those (secret) deals. Often, those grants or soft loans hide our unability to create the conditions of a sustainable development of our small islands. We too often choose the easy way and sacrify our values in the name of friendship with bigger countries. Replacing an imperialist by another one will not bring more jobs to our youth.
Here here well said
I WONDER WHAT SKERRITT THINKING NOW? HE SURE NOT SLEEPING THESE DAYS.
He thinking of where he can hide Gaddafi, because if he cannot go and hide in Venezuela Chevaz have to find somewhere for him to go. Watch the space. If D/cans think that all the freeness they getting is coming from trees now they will see what the paybacks will be. Venezuela, Libya, Morroco, Algeria, China and I wonder where else we don’t know about.
