ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) — Twin suicide blasts at a Frontier Constabulary (FC) training camp in northwest Pakistan killed at least 87 people and injured over 100 others, officials said Friday.

The attacks occurred at around 6 a.m. local time at the Shabqadar area of Charsadda, Pakistan, in the country’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing 67 FC personnel at the police training center, 20 civilians, and injuring over 100 others, including 57 FC personnel, FC Commandant Akbar Hoti told Pakistan’s the Nation.

Khyber Pukhtankhawa province and Charsadda officials have also confirmed the 87 deaths.

According to reports, the two blasts came from a suicide bomber riding an explosive-filled motorcycle, while the second came from planted explosives on a horse cart.

The blasts killed many newly-trained cadets wearing civilian clothes, who were boarding transport vehicles, as they were beginning a 10-day leave after finishing a year-long training course that had ended with a parade last Thursday.

Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan on Friday claimed responsibility of the blast, marking the first major attack in revenge of the death al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani strongly condemned Friday’s blasts, expressing deep sorrow and grief over the loss of lives. He said the militants had no regard for human life or religion, as they pursue their own agenda. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to fight militancy.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan and the United Kingdom also strongly condemned the attacks.

“We extend our condolences to the Pakistan Armed Forces, and families and friends of the victims,” the Embassy said, stating that terrorists have shown time and again that they are the “true enemy of the people and government of Pakistan.”

“We deeply respect the nation’s sacrifices, and will continue to stand with Pakistan in our joint struggle to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda and allied terrorist organizations.”

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the UK was committed to standing with Pakistan in the fight against violent extremism.

“These attacks were cowardly and indiscriminate, killing many innocent bystanders and targeting those who serve to protect Pakistan,” Hague stated. “They prove once again that such extremist groups have no regard for the value of human life.”

“I offer my sincere condolences, in particular to the families of those whose lives were lost and to those who were injured,” Hague added, underlining that the UK would continue to work with Pakistan to fight this shared threat.
