United Nations votes 191-2 to condemn U.S. embargo against Cuba

The UN general assembly
The UN general assembly

In the first United Nations vote on a resolution condemning the U.S. embargo against Cuba since the two countries renewed diplomatic ties, the U.N. voted 191-2 in favor of the condemnation.

The only drama was how the United States would vote.

In its statement, the United States said that it couldn’t support the resolution because it failed to take into account “the significant steps in the spirit of engagement” undertaken by the United States, and it was disappointed that Cuba had chosen to bring forth a resolution “almost identical” to those of years past.

The United States had to balance its developing relationship with Cuba and President Barack Obama’s declaration that he wants to work with Congress to lift the embargo against an awkward and unprecedented stance of not standing in opposition to a resolution contrary to U.S. law.

From the beginning of Communism in Cuba the nature of the beast was obvious.

I knew a missionary family from Canada who were serving in Cuba. They took nothing from the Cuban people and their interest in the place was religious and charitable not political. But when the revolution hit they had to flee. They left behind everything they owned including the rings on their fingers.

A few years later they were allowed to visit the island. They found the home they had built for their family with Canadian money had been demolished. Nothing had been constructed in its place. The beautiful front window of especially thick glass that was the joy of the missionary wife was laying on the ground in several pieces. The people were as poor as ever. Nothing had changed.

Communism failed in Cuba just as it failed in Russia. It is strange to see the US going through the pretence of making peace with Cuba when the island is still in the grip of Communism.

    Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill…

So United States puts embargo on Cuba and the whole world decided that they are not doing business with Cuba?
That’s seems strange to me I must say.

I don’t care about how the UN vote. Cuba is alright and they can fight their problem. I am concerned about Dominica that is shaking as we speak, and again PM Skerrit is enjoying life abroad, just like he did when Erika was striking Dominica. That’s what I am concerned about.

Since they now have diplomatic relations, what is the hold-up for continuing the embargo on Cuba? Senseless. The US should have lifted it at the same time when they resumed this relationship. Politics!

The US has been playing this game with Cuba for too long. It is hypocritical considering that they have had cultural exchange programs for years.

Good thing Dominica has no vote in the UN; nevertheless I am sure that Skeriit, the man who cannot say “thousand” might be in there running off his mouth saying ah wish I could vote a “townsand’ times against ‘merika’, and when I done, Skerrit kan go an beg merika for money oui!

    Hahaahahahahahahahahahhaahhah!

Oh, those dumb labor party idiots!

Israel, which I suppose is predictable since the Israelis depend on American military aid for their very survival.

The Americans have always been clumsy in their approach to the Castros, but the embargo has been perhaps the most stupid anti-Cuba policy of all. Like most forms of economic sanctions, it harms everyday people while the dictators continue to live in luxury. Moreover, it needlessly gives the Castros a propaganda advantage by letting them blame the Americans for the failures of socialism.

Mr Obama was politically courageous in normalising diplomatic relations, I’d like to think he can finish the job and normalise trade relations as well, although I suppose he’d need a legion of archangels on his side to get that through the Republican Congress….

Steve you must remember that the Castros came from a aristocratic background and immediately after the Revolution they gave up this privilege. They started the land reform program on their estates. They didn’t have to rely on being in power to enjoy such luxury. They had it all!

      • October 28, 2015

The Castros still have it all, or do you think Raul Castro eats gruel and lives in a shack? The Cuban people, on the other hand, do not have it all, nor do they even have the freedom to speak about their oppressors, and that’s the fault of the Castro regime, not the Americans.

Steve, whereas the ordinary Cuban were hurt, I do not think it was a clumsy approach, the cutting of diplomatic relations with Cuba, and the embargo served its purpose, it crippled Cuba, hence they survived by handouts from the former communist Soviet Union.

And remember there are Cubans who supported the United States in imposing the punishment on Cuba. Fact is Cuba has no economy to this day!

I like the U.S. but in this I can not support them. If they truly believe in democracy they should abide by the vote of the majority, which is the rest of the world and. Its ally Israel ashamed of itself also. Anyway, America’s intransigence does not stop the rest of the world doing business with Cuba and if the U.S.A. were to be truthful they would admit that, particularly their food industry is a major supplier to Cuba., if not the largest.
