PM Skerrit says efforts underway at OAS to undermine Venezuela

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said efforts are underway at the Organization of American States (OAS) to undermine the government of Venezuela.

Speaking at a function on Wednesday to observe the 11 anniversary of the Petrocaribe agreement between Dominica and Venezuela, the Prime Minister said Dominica will speak to anybody or any country who decide they have the right to undermine the government of the South American country.

“I would like to commend the efforts of Honorable (Francine) Baron, our Minister of Foreign Affairs and his Excellency Hubert Charles our ambassador to the United States and OAS for carrying the government’s torch, especially at the OAS where efforts are being made to undermine a constitutionally established government,” he stated.

Skerrit pointed out that it is the people of Venezuela that should determine what happens to the government.

“Not for me, not for the OAS,” he stated. “We must always, as countries, respect the democratic rights of people to determine who their government ought to be at any given time.”

He noted that Venezuela is not less democratic than any other country in the Western Hemisphere.

“So what makes us and tell the people who they should elect as a government,” Skerrit stated. “That is their right and it is on this principle of maintaining democratic ideals that Dominica continues to stand in defense and solidarity with Venezuela and will speak to anybody who or any country who decide they have the right to undermine the constitutional government of Venezuela.”

He stated that Dominica is not interfering in the internal affairs of Venezuela but “as sister countries and a member of the international community we are simply advocating the ideals of democracy.”

Last week Thursday, in an address to the permanent council of the 34-nation OAS bloc, of which Dominica is a member, head of the organization, Luis Almagro, blamed President Nicolas Maduro’s government for the crisis in Venezuela, pointing out that the South American country was now mired in poverty, corruption and violence.

“Venezuela should be one of the most prosperous and influential countries in the region. Instead, it is a state mired in corruption, poverty and violence. It is the population who suffers the consequences,” he stated.

A majority of member states voted in favor of Almagro presenting his report on Venezuela to the council, despite strong opposition from some, which could technically invoke the organization’s democratic charter and eventually lead to Venezuela’s suspension.

Almagro also called on member states to support calls by Venezuelans for a referendum to recall Maduro.

The US has welcomed Almagro’s report on Venezuela but Venezuela’s foreign minister, Delcy Rodriguez accused him of trying to overthrow Maduro through OAS actions.

I feel bad that I expected anything different from this man. He has to say the things he says for the same reason the ambassador has to say what he says despite the fact that he probably knows several people who are suffering right now because of the situation in Venezuela. They all have some vested interest in a corrupt regime that fortunately is on its way out. Not too long now. They’re trying to stall the process as much as possible but as Reggie said the people of Venezuela will overcome this blight that has marred the country for over 10 years..

Skerritt, you are suggesting that no government which wins an election should be removed from office. let me remind you that Saddam Hussein had elections in Iraq also Gaddaffi and Assad. Are you against the fact that the people of these countries were relieved of the brutality, fear and torment they suffered at the hands of these governments. This peep into your mind and values tells me you are no different from those dictators.History shows us that brutal governments when removed from office, after they have destroyed their country’s economies and peaceful way of life, leave a social cancer.Look at Haiti as another example. Is that what you want for Dominica.Well this is not what intelligent Dominicans want for our country.Sometimes elected governments who are on the wrong track and destroying the peaceful way of multi party democracy must be removed from office by any means necessary

It is mind bugling at the epoch how so many people are still made a fool of these insidious ideological deception
Are we not well aware of the situation the countries you just pointed out going through in the absence of their pass leaders?
      Answer these questions honestly:

      1. Is the people of Iraq and Libya any better off today without Saddam and Gaddafi?
      2. Is the country more stable?
      3. Is the world any safer and more tolerant in these leaders absence?

The world is fighting a loosing battle today what Saddam and Gaddafi were fighting yesterday.
There seems to be no difference now between hero and villain

@Cracker Jack you just don’t get it.Of course Iraq,Syria and Haiti are a mess after these dictators are removed.Just like cancer metastercizes, the disruption that these dictators cultivate spreads and leads to a lot of chaos.Knowing that you seem to prefer having a despot rule over you,but I and many others, including the international community don’t and won’t allow a people to live under despots. So not because there is an elected government,if it becomes cancerous it has to be removed, even if the surgery to remove it,will cause trauma and healing will take time.Do you get it? By any means necessary.

I never would have thought that the political leader of Dominica would have accused the OAS, bounded by its charter to promote democracy, of undermining the government of a Member State. Apparently, the OAS Charter to which Dominica is bound by virtue of its membership means nothing to the current government of Dominica. How this country, once seen as a leader in the region in the fight for democracy and human rights , has deteriorated under expedient and morally vacuous leadership.

  8. Fact
    June 30, 2016

Skeritt!. The OAS is not undermining the Government of Venezuela. The leadership of Maduro who received the torch from the king of corruption Chavez, has single handedly created this mess in Venezuela. First you blamed the international press for the mass demonstrations that the Venezuelan people coordinated, and now you’re blaming the OAS. I know you are one of his surrogates, but you can only support his ruthless actions until his reign of terror comes to an end. The will of the people MUST prevail.

We cannot nor should we ever blame the esteemed Prime Minister for his narrow-minded comments, which are deliberately devoid of the truth and circumstances facing the citizens of Venezuela. We should not forget that Dominica, underneath the leadership of Skerrit has become a
“World Class Beggar Nation.” Skerrit is simply hedging his bets that, should Venezuela return to prominence, he will have somewhere to beg from.
Furthermore, when you’re able to continuously fool the majority of your own population, keep them poor and dependent on policies such as: The Red Clinic, free plywood, galvanize, cement and cheap rum, you’re led to believe that anyone who reads your propaganda is as gullible as those citizens at home. For those of us who are educated enough to decipher international relations, we always see Skerrit coming from miles away, like a thief in the night, long before he ever arrives.

That time maybe now before it is too late. Last time I checked the price of oil is dropping again . Some additional capital must be generated from some other source .

  16. As I am writing this, there are millions of Venezuelan Citizens who are starving and cannot find food or important life-saving medication. These Venezuelan Citizens expressed their lack of confidence in their President, Nicolas Maduro, through a DEMOCRATIC PROCESS by voting overwhelmingly to give Venezuela’s opposition control of the national assembly in a December 2015 election. This vote was a vote to give the opposition the power to bring a referendum that would remove Maduro from power. Now, the good Doctor who is not a Doctor at all, the Supreme Leader to loyally blinded Labourites, Knighted Prime Minister of Dominica completely ignores the wishes of these suffering Venezuelan Citizens in defense of Maduro under the guise of “PROTECTING DEMOCRACY”? What a shame it is for our Prime Minister to undermine the Citizens of Venezuela to support a President who is seen around the world as a FAILED POLITICIAN with no respect for DEMOCRACY!

George Orwell, the author of Animal Farm, famously wrote in his book 1984 that “in times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act. “. As the Dear Leader correctly points out ” it is the people of Venuzuela that should determine what should happen to the government.” I submit that the people of Venezuela cannot determine what happens until they are given the opportunity to do so and liberate themselves. Allegedly, the President is refusing to allow a referendum and and has allegedly said he will not allow the opposition to win. It may be high time for Dear Leader of Dominica to call a spade a spade.

The PM was only expressing his objection against the OAS decision regarding the Venezuela crisis, this is not anti American. As a member of an organization and an independent Country, The PM has a right to show his objection, especially if it is not in our interest. The US being a member they to have a right to support their interest also.I’m sure there are other countries within the OAS who object to the OAS handling of the crisis, so why are we creating an anti American sentiment for objecting to The OAS, simply because it suits a political agenda.

I agree with the PM on this one. America has had it for Venezuela for almost 10 years now maybe more. With this new ISIS era, they have decided to lower the price of oil, which is controlled by ISIS occupied countries, or Saudi’s who back the Islamic State. In an effort to cut or cramp their spending power to fund terrorism, they have sought to lower the price of a barrel of oil by more than 50% worldwide. In doing so they have also dealt with the problem of Venezuela who have SIGNIFICANTLY cut into their revenues for oil and gas in the Caribbean Region. This a strategic move by the US. I am not at all surprised that Skerrit is defending Venezuela’s “democracy” since he has modeled Dominica’s democracy after Venezuela. But the truth is that there is no democracy in either Dominica or Venezuela. Vote rigging and other electoral abuses corrupt the democratic process and renders tainted election results which is contrary to the spirit of democracy.
Lastly, Skerrit seems to have his head in the sand as he ignores the situation in Venezuela. That country, with its dubious claims to a socialist revolution, is a cautionary tale for what WILL to Dominica a few years down the road. With its economy in tatters and begging being the most vibrant industry, Dominica is all but certain to end on the rocks, just like Venezuela and all this talk of Petro Caribe and ALBA will be a distant memory. And all the passport selling and shady dealings with international crooks will come back to haunt us. You can take this to the bank.

This (one man) Government’s support of the Venezuelan President who is known to jail members of his Country’s opposition and for using his Armed Forces to suppress the wishes of Venezuelan Citizens certainly does not reflect good on Dominica. The world will be looking at Dominica now as a supporter of dictatorial governance and grave human rights violations. And the big question that will be asked is…”why is this tiny Caribbean Island supporting the oppression, hunger and suffering of the Venezuelan people?” Is it because of greed? Is it because the Dominican Government practices the same style of governance as Maduro and therefore stands in solidarity with Maduro’s oppressive governance in Venezuela? Or, is it that Dominicans hate Venezuelans and could care less about their suffering? Questions WILL be asked!

Also the failed economic policies that created the black market are making it impossible to buy what little is available since they can only be obtained at exorbitant prices and then at selling point you have government price regulations forced on you so what’s the point of growing anything if you can’t get a return on your investment?

I put these people down to UWP supporters which is why they carry-on as this with also their hatred. It is something God detests as they deprive themselves of his blessing and graces. If they are Christians and church going ones they should know that; not intelligent people. Their punishment will be more severe.
If they keep this up as they do, the worst is waiting for them. They do not know better and what is waiting for them. I visualize one day they will reap what they sow. It may be coming soon.
