U.S., Cuba plan restored relations after 50 years of hostility

Obama
Obama

The United States plans to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba more than 50 years after they were severed, a major policy shift after decades of hostile ties with the communist-ruled island, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.

Announcing the end of what he called a “rigid” policy of isolation of Cuba that had been ineffective, Obama said the United States planned to move toward normal ties and would open an embassy in Cuba.

The policy shift will mean a relaxation in some aspects of commerce and transportation between the United States and Cuba, but it does not mean an end to the longstanding trade embargo, which needs congressional approval.

This is a strategic move by Obama in light of the fact that the pact establishing the US presence at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba will soon expire. With the normalisation of relationship, the US expects its presence in Cuba to be extended.

That trade embargo was not real anyway. For years now the U.S.A. have been the biggest food suppliers to Cuba and Fidel has been happily taking rent in U.S.$. from Uncle Sam for Guantanamo Bay for as long as the conflict has lasted. Money always talks.

Mr. Skerrit played no role in this decision making which has been in the works for some time now. Rather it was the Pope who played a key role in historic Cuba deal or as President Obama calls him “The Real Deal”

Who said he did? Some people who wrote on DNO made that comment due to his speech about Cuba and Venezuela.
You are correct as I heard it on Catholic Radio and local News. The PM of Canada also had a part to play in it. From what I heard, talks were in the works since last year.

This had nothing to do with Skerrit, this has been discussed since this Democratic administration took over. Obama actually met with the OES and AEAS states in his first term Oh my people. iN THE BIGGER SCENE of things Dominica is but a mosquito, the size of a collage campus with t most Principal, not even a District Superintendent. Alb is good news because it gives more balance to the third world nation against the IMF and its high crippling interest rates. So it breaks the monopoly and poorer nations have choice to borrow with better interest rates.

This is but common sense, both President Obama and PM Skerrit are trying a different approach to world diplomacy. America is no longer number one world super power. China is. PM Skerrit was wise to follow up n the initiatives of Roosie Dougla and form alliances with China and Cuba, this is not about communism it is about making alliances, however Dominicans will determine the type of government they have and even under socialist /communist regimes there is to be diplomacy, integrity and transparency s the government is working for the people, and the people are the employers.

Isn’t it amazing that the world aw the futility of that embargo, yet it has taken the Americans over 50 years to realize that?

They have made peace with Russia, China, Vietnam and all the other despotic regimes around the world, yet they have few diehard Cuban-Americans tails wagging the dog.

Hopefully they will come to their complete senses when they finally and completely lift the embargo. Nothing crumbles a dictatorship faster than a restless population that has tasted prosperity.

Guess what? I also heard on the US Catholic News that Pope Francis was also instrumental in this. President Obama personally confirmed it.
In the past Saint Pope John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI also spoke about it.
Striving for peace, every Head of State and Church must be concerned about the lack of communication and embargo restrictions between the US and Cuba.
The next step is releasing the Cuban people from their bondage of dictatorship and give them freedom. Let us pray for this.

I don’t think this development will be to the detriment of our tourism industry. Europeans have been traveling to Cuba for vacation in their millions for years now on cheap holiday packages with direct flights. There is even a direct flight from Martinique to cater for that but their is no regular air service between Dominica and Martinique (there is between St. Lucia and Martinique though!) If our tourism industry goes down it will be because of inadequate standards and services and not because of Cuba.

It is never too late to bury the hatchet and smoke the peace pipe. I have waited all of my young and adult life to hear this encouraging news. You can bet that this initiative will be met with fierce resistance from both the Republican front and the older, legacy Cuban ex-pats whose raw emotions are bound to be stirred up. I will admit I have no idea what it was like to have walked in there shoes when they were in Cuba; however, I also do not not know what it was like living in Cuba prior to the revolution when racism and the adverse effects of imperialism were rampant. As for me and my house we opt to be ambassadors of peace and relationship builders. It certainly feels good to witness the beginning of a 9,000,000 mile emotional barrier reduced to the 90 miles of natural separation.

Your comments confirm the lack of comprehension in labor/skeritt worshipers. He is apparently more concerned about justice in Venezuela and Cuba than Dominica. Take a look at all the unsolved murders in Dominica. Cuba has a system where people have no rights and you can go to jail for having a difference of opinion. Over the decades millions of Cubans have fled by boat. Not to Venezuela, not to Dominica, but to the US. They have been welcomed to the point where their kids are now in the US senate/ Government. You sit here talking about justice. America stands on the principles of freedom and liberty for all men. Although not perfect it is what allows creativity and people to develop to their maximum potential. Many times people try to exploit that freedom. Just like opposition is stiffled in Venezuela skeritt is using a soft approach Dominica. He stands for nothing and says whatever he thinks will please a target audience. Skeritt role in influencing American Cuba relationship and US influence in the region is as insignificant as our planet in the universe.
While you speak and our PM is posturing to try and impress idiots like you, there are millions of Cubans living in America who are poised to take back their country. Our tourism industry will take a hit when Cuba opens up.
At this time skeritt should focus on sustainable economic development in Dominica and stop trying to pretend that he has any clout to set regional and international agenda. He thinks he can feast on everyone like he can do on the ignorance of many Dominicans.

Zuma, Skerrit did not focus on any injustice perpetrated on Cuba, by the United States. Skerrit words are an attack on the United States, when he said ” an attack by the United States on ALBA and Latin American nations are an attack on the Caribbean. Insinuating that the embargo on Cuba is an attack on the entire Caribbean, including Dominica.

One way in which the word attack can be defined is as such: “the act of attacking with physical force or unfriendly words.” If we agree according to my quote in the definition of attack, you will find that Skerrit is the one attacking the United States with unfriendly words. Skerrit literally said he is prepared to declare war on the United States in order to bring an end to the embargo; his words and thoughts cannot be interpreted in any other way, shape or form.

Attack also imply’s a belligerent or an antagonistic action, such as immediate capture to make an attack in a sense of war. Has the United States of America declared war on any Caribbean island including Dominica?

Absolutely not! If anything the United States have a policy which states: “an attack on any Latin American nation, shall be considered an attack on the United States of America” in that sense, any nation which declares war, on Mexico, in North America, or any nation within central America which is on the American continent, the United States will go to war with the attacker.

Note: Some of the ALBA nations are located in Central America; so again Skerrit has made a fool of himself, at least that’s the way I perceive it. And mind you even Guyana in South America is on the American continent, if it is not yet completed people in the interim will be able to drive from any
state in America to George Town Guyana, I believe the High Way is called the Pan-American Highway

The declaration of the United States is far different from the rubbish Skerrit spoke. And by the way to the supporters who made the claim that what Obama said today has vindicated Skerrit is nothing more than wishful thinking:

      why?

The answer is what Obama did today, is as a result of the promise he made way back in May 2008 while campaigning in Miami, he made that promises to the Cuban Americans, the older ones who fled Cuba, when their homes, and business were taken away from them by Fidel Castro in the 1950’s, or somewhere around there. The communist took Cuba in the early 1950’s the Embargo is fifty years old that means it was placed on Cuba in 1964, just about the time the Soviet Union was in Cuba installing ballistic Missiles aimed at the United States. I challenge Skerrit, or any Dominican to refute that!

The words of Skerrit are precisely that of the policy of the United States; which he as usual plagiarized; only this time in reverse!

I agree, it is beneficial for both sides. Today Cuba can only supply 40% of its energy needs with its own oil and natural gas. It has to import the rest, primarily from Venezuela, which now needs U.S.Dollars in return. The big U.S. oil companies will be able to provide the technology, equipment and know-how to develop Cuba’s resources further through joint ventures and turn Cuba into a net exporter of energy in relatively short time. Much needed foreign exchange will be generated for Cuba and the dependence on its Alba partner Venezuela weakened. Strategically a clever move. In the same week that the U.S. declare sanctions against Venezuela they agree to open up relationships with Cuba. This will furthermore loosen Cuba’s historical ties with Russia. Big U.S.$ financing will be made available for Cuba to purchase American equipment and services. The observance of human rights, freedom of the press and democracy will take second place I’m afraid but at least there will be more opportunity for direct dialogue and action on these matters also if the U.S. use their increased leverage properly. This is only the first step and I’m happy for the people of Cuba that their relative isolation has been breached.

You know I was just waiting to hear some crap like what you wrote. Obama do not have any time to hear the crap Skerrit spews. What he said was long in the in the making; that is associated with the closure of the prison where the keep and interrogate terrorists in Guantanamo in Cuba.

Dating back to World War II to this day the United States own and operate a military base in Guantanamo Cuba, they never left. People read, and does not understand what they read. Only one guy read into it correctly and notice the embargo will not be lifted although they may reestablish diplomatic relations with Cuba.

What is wrong with that, during the cold war between the United States and Russia(the then Soviet Union) both nations maintained embassy’s in both countries, even to the day when Kennedy Nave stop the Russians dead in the track in the Caribbean sea, and gave them a chance to return to Russia without demolishing them in Caribbean waters. That is not a big deal, the fact is the embargo will remain in place until communism comes to an end in Cuba.

      December 17, 2014

You are such a fool! Important world figures have made representation to the US on Cuba’s behalf and nothing happened, do you believe that a non entity like skerritt can affect the way the US deals with Cuba? You JA’s really sicken me.

  35. December 17, 2014

Skerrit is in Havana, Cuba attending an ALBA Summit.

“I am here to tell you, dear presidents of Venezuela and Cuba, our commitment is unwavering,” teleSUR quoted the prime minister as saying. “An attack against Cuba, against Venezuela is an attack against the Caribbean and Latin America.”

Cheers, our PRIME MINISTER has flexed his muscles and President Obama has recapitulated.

The United States plans to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba more than 50 years after they were severed, a major policy shift after decades of hostile ties with the communist-ruled island, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.

I told you so! Skerrit is now the the BIGGEST FISH IN THE POND. What more can we ask for?

    • hmmph
      December 18, 2014

USA and Cuba has been discussing this long before Skerrit was even PM so don’t feel big. Things like this take years, this isn’t Dominica where things are done vykivy and now for now.

    • December 18, 2014

COME ON, do you really think that Roosevelt Skerrit can influence US politics? Oh please! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!

    • December 18, 2014

Don’t be a fool. The opinion of the PM of Dominica is not even the smallest factor in what U.S. policymakers decide to do, and wouldn’t be no matter who the PM is.

      • The Fact
        December 19, 2014

Someone started this and some others followed suite.
One fool makes many fools :?:
I would never think that the PM had a say in that; not about the US.

      December 19, 2014

Carcon you are funny, really! Skerrit can not even win an election in a small country like Dominica on his own. He needs a Bajan fixer to do it for him.

  36. Cyrique
    December 17, 2014

Nothing happens before it’s time. Can you imagine the joy of all those Cubans who’ll be able to travel freely and be able to rejoin their loves ones. God is in control. Well done Obama and our PM.

    • Titiwi
      December 17, 2014

Cyrique, you really are only a crab. What has that got to do with Roosevelt Skerrit, especially after he blasted the U.S. over its sanction against Venezuela. You even have the gall to put him on the same level as Obama, just like that boaster did himself on his election posters. Next thing you telling us it is all Skerrit who do that when we are learning that the main person to make that happen was his Holiness the Pope. Skerrit is just a pipsqueek, who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

      • The Fact
        December 19, 2014

Your first two sentences made me laugh  and also Cyrique’s last sentence.

this does not meaN THAT THE EMBARGO will cease. This was done to free an aAmerican who was imprisoned in Cuba since 2009. the embargo remains.

    December 17, 2014

Its about time. Skerrit have real power boy. Last time he was in Cuba he shouted viva LA revolution and asked america to free Cuban agents. After his declarations yesterday that aggression towards Venezuela and Cuba is aggression on the entire Caribbean, Obama had no choice but to ease the long standing position and free agents. Tsk tsk. All you think skeritt playing. The new world order has begun. Chavez gone skeritt in charge.

    :-D

    • Stupes
      December 18, 2014

      @Shaku Zulu
Skerrit called for such and I applaud him but trust me, Skerrit was not the one who put this in motion. When negotiations go on in America’s white house and House of Representatives, Skerrit doesn’t know what’s going on in there. His call aided but he isn’t the “boss” you portray him to be.

    • PS
      December 20, 2014

Don’t you worry, Cuba has Skerrit’s number. Remember the time before they sent him home from the CELAC meeting because he is supporting the King of Morocco against the African people of the Western Sahara, who want their freedom and independence?

  38. December 17, 2014

pay close attention to this my fellow Dominicans. The usa just placed sanctions on Venezuela oil prices are dropping. Venezuela is in debt. And now the usa is making friends with Cuba. Dominicans sit down and think what that means. Here is a clue. Alba is getting crushed.

Always negative. So you think. Why not give this situation some weeks or months, even a year?
Consider how much US has also lost by this 50 years hostility?

    • December 18, 2014

I think it’s more that the Castros are softening their stance toward the Americans by necessity, because they realise that Maduro’s crumbling regime is no longer in a position to prop them up.

    • Me
      December 18, 2014

Russia Russia Russia! The US has Russia’s economy in peril because Russia refuses to be bullied over Ukraine. Russia’s economy is built on oil. Oil prices worldwide are down ask yourselves why. Why suddenly become best friends with Cuba one of Russia’s allies? Why now? Russia and Cuba have similar philosophies where the US is concerned. Bittersweet moment for Cuba because the US never does anything out of the goodness of their hearts. Cuba best look out. The word vulnerable comes to mind.

      • JoJo
        December 19, 2014

The Cubans are smart people too. They waited until after Russia wrote off their debt. to make their deal with the U.S.A. Very astute. Puttin must feel real sore now.

So you are saying that out of 188 countries that spoke against the Cuban embargo this October at the UN general assembly,. It took one man, (The Almighty Skero) to convince the USA to ease up a few sanctions on Cuba.. Sad to see the way some of us think.

      • Zuma
        December 17, 2014

This is not the point. You all bashed him yesterday and call him a fool for speaking out against atrocities because you all are scared. The following day his will like the other 188 countries you mentioned were done. Talk about forces of power

      • JoJo
        December 17, 2014

Zuma, You are turning things on their head. Skerrit spoke in support of Venezuela, which stands accused of atrocities against its own people. He did the same for that mad sadist Gadaffi in Lybya, right to the end you remember? He still does the same for this friend the King of Morocco, who is suppressing the people of the Western Sahara, so I don’t understand where your idea is coming from that Skerrit is against such behavior..

      • Gwo Tay Tay
        December 17, 2014

Zuma is definately a red clown who has no knowledge of world issues because if you can conclude that one man (King Skerrit) made this deal possible then you must be an ARSE.

By the way The US is now in the process of putting sanctions on Venezuela. Will your king Skerrit put a hault on that too? SAKWAY SORT

Just as you said, it was an era which is ending! The cold war and all of that, Sorry you were a casualty of that! Some of us were casualties of a different kind – the class system right here at home, Leblanc included . Town and country bookie/black & light skinned dichotomy of another era too! We have moved on and ahead if you ask me. It might be a good idea for you to do the same!

Is Barack Obama a hypocrite too based on the actions of his forbears? I hope some uninformed and unsuspecting persons do not now take up your cause and start hating a whole new set of people! Elections are over so we must find a new hate target, right?

      • Me
        December 17, 2014

Barbara, I’m not sure what you are getting at referring to Obama’s forbears but he is as much Caucasian as he is African. Do we need to chose? I don’t think so.

With Cuba opening up shortly we will suffer tremendously. We shifted making a shift from Agri 2 Tourism Cuba will take away all the cruises by 2016 and your cabal has not seen that yet. To Saunders

My post was in reaction to a specific comment by Intransigent one! I note that he or she did not take up his or her war gear like you! Most decisions made by the larger economies in this era of globalisation have implications for others, particularly small developing states like ours, so your point is taken. How on earth did my comment provoke your diatribe and place me in the ranks of “infiltrators”?

From my assessment I have concluded that fixation on cabals whether blue or red will not uplift me or anyone else so thanks, but no thanks for drafting me into the one that you imagine I should be in! I honestly feel very sorry for people like you who swear and curse at people you do not even know! It speaks to a serious character flaw, now becoming commonplace in D/CA!

In the circumstances, I do thank DNO for the opportunity to be “undifferentiated” ( I believe that is the word), just like “Josh Shaw”, “Cojones”, “As I see it” and others of New Chronicle fame. Accordingly, being “undifferentiated” is not a new phenomenon and, interestingly, I note that you are also unashamedly enjoying the same privilege.

I do wish you and all other haters the peace of the season and more to come in 2015. That’s my take my friend!
