IOM hands over emergency shelters to Dominica government

Minister Isaac (left) with IOM Chief of Mission Wegdam

The international organisation for Migration (IOM) officially handed over 16 emergency shelters as well as supplies and equipment to be used in those shelters to the government of Dominica. Among the supplies donated were fire hydrants, wheel chairs, stoves and gasoline cylinders, cots and wheel barrows.

IOM Chief of mission Jan William Wegdam says the original plan was to refurbish 12 shelters but in the end 16 were done.

“We are so happy that we exceeded all of the objectives and that we finished in time. We repaired 16 emergency shelters and I can give a little bit of credit to the Mennonites actually because we saved so much on the labour cost that enabled us to do more shelters,” he stated.

Wegdam says that the IOM also trained more than 300 people in First Aid, fire extinguishing, evacuation, psycho social support, emergency shelter management and ham radio operation.

Meantime, Minister for The Environment, Climate Resilience, Disaster Management and Urban Renewal, Joseph Isaac says the government and people of Dominica, recognise the value of the IOM’s contribution to Dominica’s recovery.

The minister said, “On behalf of the ministry and the government and the people of Dominica, I want to profusely thank the IOM, that is the International Organization for Migration and the United States Agency for International development USAID for their valuable contribution to emergency shelter management in Dominica.”

The minister said his statement was made in the context of Dominica being ravage by hurricane Maria in which over 25,000 households were impacted including shelters.

He says the intervention of the IOM supported by USAID was very timely.

“I would like to therefore commend the IOM, USA and the other partners for a tremendous job, additionally I want to thank all the government and non government departments and organization including the shelter managers around Dominica who have contributed to the successful implementation of this project,” he concluded.

In a few days the crime minister will claim all credit for this to himself, even though his government was not able to do it. I also fear that the majority of the supplies and equipment in the shelters will sooner rather than later fall prey to certain DLP operatives. Remember what happened to the donated generators?

Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. You all cannot do anything better but run your mouths. Wicked UWP men. Everything is a Skerrit. Get a life and a job and do something meaningful. Bums.

I hope the international communities, fellow Dominicans at home and abroad who were assisted or gave assistance will not use the negatives expressed by uwp supporters to paint the majority of us Dominicans as an ungrateful and unappreciative people.
The generous assistance of the IOM is tremendously appreciated and we as a people are extremely grateful for their generosity . When you face disaster the words that come to mind are…” a friend in your time of need is a friend indeed. Thanks and God bless, IOM.

My wife and I want to join Joseph Isaac in saying a heartfelt thank you to the IOM and USAID for this most needed assistance. The hurricane shelters will serve as life savers for us, since we are already in the hurricane season and so many… so many homes are still in terrible conditions and cannot serve as a safe shelter for anyone during a tropical storm.

Thanks IOM. We do appreciate your assistance; we are therefore saying again Thank you. I think I represent the sentiments of many grateful Dominicans who have been grateful for all the assistance given to us after the ravages of Hurricane Maria in 2017. It is a time where many persons are looking to criticize, without being thankful to all our donors – locally and internationally. Whilst our first thank you is for the Almighty Father who spared us as most of us could have died, I would also like to say thank you to the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica under the able leadership of the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit. This gentleman has seen two major disasters in two years; has done his utmost best. A lot has been done; Again thank you Jehovah for your hands of protection over us.
A note to you who enjoy saying hurtful things instead of thanks, it is time to stop being political on everything. Give honour when due. Togetherness &Love. Help someone in need. Trop…

Mr climate resilient Isaac…..compare this with the statement from Ian Douglas
Better yet: can you break down de achievement of your government?
    How many cots?..
Did your government cover every roof in Dominica free of cost and labor?
Your big money millionaire prime minister should be ashamed… people still living in hurricane shelter….. what do you want to say about that.

    Isaac you sound pitiful!!!!!
Now you have to thank US non government institution and UN…. exposing de failure of your government and in particular your ministry

If it wasn’t for IOM where would we be on repair to shelters?

I really appreciate that IOM did not do any work on government institution like youth center and planning office building as well as police and fire station.
Thank God for de UN and US humanitarian agencies…..I can’t say de same for China, Russia, Malaysia, Dubai……our closest neighbor seems to appreciate us in higher regard

IOM have done a wonderful job.
If de government had more capacity they would be making that announcement on their own ……to prove our resilience!!!!
de government taking credit for de achievements of IOM………i agree they are just pitiful!!!!!!

Joseph Isaac says “the government and people of Dominica, recognise the value of the IOM’s contribution to Dominica’s recovery.”
We welcome any aid from overseas donors but there has to be this structure to see well implemented and serviced to the benefits of our people.
I would therefore want Mr. Cross the Floor Joseph Issac that ” We recognise the value and committed hard work of our own local Dominican resource contribution over the years to Dominica’s recovery and development”. We therefore further have to comment on the sad state of affairs of our villages, communities and Dominica overall. This corrupt Labour government and its failed Skerrit with a useless 19 ministers have continued to reduce our people to poverty, begging without any obvious plan to raise the profile of our people and engaged wholesomely to their development and upliftment of their respective communities and villages. Please do not rely on Skerrit and his fail Labour government, its just a big…

Get a life Views Expressed, what do you do beside seat at your computer and wait for a torrie. For a person who proposes pie in the sky don’t you think volunteering your time would be a better way of making a difference %? How can we have confidence in a person who doesn’t contribute anything towards humanity. Is it just the Dominican treasury that you have your 👀 on! Using your time towards a degree of higher learning of might enhance your chances of being elected. When is the next beggington.

@Me, the uwp opposition gang bangers are real eye openers to the leadership and Judas goat followers to their lack of class, substance and competence. They are like crabs in a barrel ready to bite and eat the hands that feed them. I just hope that the world viewers do not judge us by the antics of this minority group.

We see the practice of “do so don’t like so” when Christian who was the deputy of the DFP cross to be candidate of the UWP …silence moo moo time. When Edison James and Linton made quid pro quo promises on the passport issue no problem, but now the PM is using the “passport money” for Capital Expenditure uwp operatives are breaking all hell loose. Now they really deep blue vex, ready to burst.

See how far UWP get without Isaac and Loreen…..you need to get a life….. Joseph Isaac can NEVER win Roseau North.
He keeps getting rejected….dat office in stock farm will NEVER guarantee a win. De people taking everything…… THEY WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM!

Julius Timothy had his little stronghold but he was bowled out for a duck….. Isaac face in Roseau North lacks confidence….. because he can’t turn around UWP Supporters
Remember Danny beat Timothy worse in the by-election

In hindsight it’s good that they left and joined their true conviction. UWP doesn’t want any corrupt people in their ranks.
