J. Astaphan & Co. Ltd statement on the ban on corned beef from Brazil

J. Astaphan & Co. Ltd says it does not import corned beef from the Brazilian facilities under investgation

Consumers may be aware of the various news reports and articles about an investigation in Brazil by the Brazilian government on irregular practices in the certification of meat and meat products and the resulting ban, in Dominica and other Caribbean islands, on corned beef out of Brazil. J. Astaphan & Co. Ltd sells ASTA brand and MP brand corned beef, which originate from Brazil.

Each shipment of our corned beef is accompanied by an “Official Certificate for Meat and Meat Products” issued by the Federative Republic of Brazil. This Official Certificate discloses, by way of an SIF number, the establishment/unit that has processed the shipped corned beef. The “Sif number and name of processor are also clearly visible on the can.

The good health and wellbeing of its patrons are of paramount importance to J. Astaphan & Co Ltd. Given the potential impact these reports could have on its patrons, the Company immediately sought information and clarification on this matter.

We obtained a listing of the 21 meat-producing facilities in Brazil under investigation by the Brazilian government; this listing included the relevant SIF numbers of these 21 facilities. J Astaphan & Co Ltd can confirm that the establishments/units producing/processing its corned beef are not included in the 21 named facilities under investigation by the Brazilian government.

It was also confirmed to us that the establishments/units/facilities producing/processing our corned beef brands are in no way implicated in the issue relating to unwholesome meat and meat products coming from Brazil.

We have been reliably informed that meat and meat products from the production/processing unit where the ASTA brand, among others, are produced were recently tested by the Barbados authorities and found to be safe. This finding resulted in the lifting of the ban in Barbados earlier this week. We have also been made aware that many of the other Caribbean islands have already lifted their ban on the importation of Brazilian meats, with the exception of those from the 21 named entities.

J. Astaphan & Co. Ltd has always been, and remains, committed to providing top quality products at affordable prices to its customers. By extension, we are committed to working with Government on all issues relating to public health and safety. Our patrons can rest assured that their good health is a matter of priority to us.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well Astaphan family/organization can say what ever they want but they aren’t our government to tell us about the safety of their cornbeef. The ministry of health said that our citizens shouldn’t eat such cornbeef until further notice and until they recede the hold our citizens shouldn’t eat such meat. We don’t know if our Government recognize the testing facility refer to in this article because we know that with the right amount of money one can get almost want they want. I suspect that the Astaphan family probably hold the proprietory contract to import cornbeef into Dominica so they are trying to save money and disregarding the health concern of our citizens.

To all you cannibals, go ahead and eat all you can, grow horns and make that sound ___mooo but don’t forget the folk tale about ‘the fish and the fly’ when mother fish told the baby fish that this horrid fly is put to hide the sharpness of the hook.

I hate that term we a reliably informed. That, to me is all I need not to trust information. Why is Astaphans relying on test in Barbados. Who made sure that test were conducted properly, according to international scientific standards? Astaphans may be correct but this information should come from the ministry of health and trade. Additionally, all test documents must be provided from certified testing facility. Astaphans is in business and this could significantly affect thier bottom line, as a result this could be a conflict of interest. The only authority that should determine if Astaphans product is safe is the government. They are responsible for safety of the people and they are the only ones the public should rely on. That is thier regulatory mandate. Merely saying that Astaphans care about public health means absolutely nothing. Unless this comes from gov based on Gov standard I say disregard.

ASTA is your personal label that you use on products which are produced in other countries so those of us who can read and understand cannot be fooled by this foolish article that you published here.

This is so vague, empty statement for a rich company, why not list the company name they get theirs from. It’s the Internet age, the public can help by doing our own research. Asta, just do the right thing and get rid of them old boxes that doesn’t even touch your bottom line.

But that is the whole issue: Corrupt officials were certifying rotten meat as safe.

So what assurances do we have that these the other facilities are not just like the 21?

I believe you. It takes a few greedy,non-caring ones to sell contaminated products unknowingly to suppliers who, in turn sell them to customers. I hope those who breached their responsibility to their customers in general will be caught and dealt with accordingly. It could result in other suppliers losing their business. This could be a disaster.

People please do not buy the corn beef, they always certify and the product is bad.
You may like it but can substitute with something else.

Astaphans remove the corn beef from the shelves. I am sure management don’t eat it. Braziliancorn beef is Brazilian cornbeef whether listed or not. If u care so much about people, as you Claim to, you will remove it for our safety and suffer the loss .
