Andrew Holness of the JLP is Jamaica’s Prime Minister-Elect

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has won the 2016 General Election.

According to information reaching Dominica News Online (DNO), preliminary results from all 63 contested seats show the JLP securing 33 seats while the incumbent People’s National Party won 30.

The PNP’s loss signals the end of the prime ministership of Portia Simpson Miller who is expected to be replaced by JLP leader, Andrew Holness.

The results show that it was a close fight for the JLP in the following four constituencies:

St. Andrew Eastern, the JLP won by 157 votes.

What I admire about Jamaica’s election is no bribery. No elaborate shows and international artist flying in to perform. Little money was sent on campaigning. You wear your t shirt and you go to your political gatherings. Nobody was giving money and food undercover for you to vote for them. That is what u call a fair election. The people knew what they wanted and no one couldcconvince them otherwise.

You may not know but JLP in Jamaica is the equivalent of UWP in Dominica. PNP Jamaica,, on the other hand, mimics DLP. But I must say politically speaking, JA is far ahead of DA. Our politicians including Skerrit and Linton have no real plan for Dominica. Soory folks, DA will be in this mess for a long time.

  7. February 26, 2016

Change is a must, maybe but not just forf change sake. The alternative in Dominica at this point of time is quite laughable, ‘a comedy of error’, for those who are familiar with William Shakespear will get my drift. The oposition in Jamaica were credible and so they were elected which is what happens in a democracy. Sad to say our opposition has a long way to go before they can become electable. All we get from the opposition is roro, hate, greed and envy and those are not the qualification for forming a credible goverment. UWP needs to go back to the drawing board and do some honest soul searching. By the way conngratulations to Dr,Honourable Rosvelt Skeritt on the well deserved honour bestowed upon you.

You are being really unwise for saying that the alternative is \”laughable.\” I would like to ask you to go find out how many ministers in this Gov\’t had any experience in leadership before they were paid to run for DLP?
So in the same breath , the opposition has not been given the chance to prove themselves, and as such should not be written off.
Only unwise people fail to look at the other side. All over the caribbean , there have been a sweeping wave of removal of the party in power, except for in Dominica, so this begs to the questions that , \”why do you think they are doing better than us?\”

Congratulations Sir and all the best. Hats off to Portia Simpson Miller! I heard her concession speech/remarks. No cursing of the electorate who didn’t make her win! No accusations of voter fraud in the constituencies which her party did not win! Actual congratulatory wishes to her opponent who won!

Perhaps we can invite her to Dominica to give some lessons or consultancy services on statesmanship (womanship) and social decorum to those who insist on rabble-rousing anytime that anything does not go their way, be it elections, court decisions or anything else including natural disasters.

Remember she was in gov’t. she may have tried all possible to make the field balanced in her favor. Just as in Venezuela. Presently the gov’t has four seats on hold because they accuse of being rigged. While they are in power just to prevent a super majority. I believe in fairness and equality. Give each side a fair share of the opportunities available to them. Even Marpin 2k4 in which people pay for the service is so much like GIS. In Dominica gov’t and those who can used gov’t resources control the airwaves. If gov’t is sending for voters to vote on island give the opposition that opportunity too. Since there is so much a lack of transparency one can safely conclude that campaign monies was either tax or passport money. Nobody has been told where the money came from. Nobody seems to care. Congratulations to all those who win fairly and justly.

        Looking

        1. Whatever you wish to speculate on what she might have done merely because she was in government does not take away from Mrs. Simpson’s decorum in defeat! Period! Hats off to the lady!

        2. I didn’t know that the ruling party had to give the opposition the opportunity to bring in voters from the diaspora? Who had given the opposition the opportunity when they did the same thing in previous elections?

        3. It is these uninformed notions which we develop and internalise which result in unjustified hatred against other people and which we pass on to others and spread the venom on the basis of totally flawed perceptions.

Keep looking, particularly for reliable information and fact.

Babara Saunders your comment is very misleading. I reside in Florida and surrounded by Jamaican friends. My radio station sleeps and wakes up on Jamaican 1170 WLIV. So I have been following the election.

While I routed for MS. Miller Simpson, let me make it clear that the Election Commission MUST be congratulated for ensuring a fair election. Here is the Gleaner 3 days before the election: “There are 1,824,410 people on the voters’ list, which was released last November. The Electoral Office of Jamaica said 34,907 people were added to the list, while 3,536 names were removed. It’s been rumored that those removed were from marginal PNP seats.

Secondly, Portia still has a hold on three seats won by the DLP because she is claiming victory and wants a recount.
      http://www.entornointeligente.com/articulo/7974288/JAMAICA-Portia-commends-JLP-on-victory-but-ready-for-recounts-26022016

Thirdly, She sued Mr. Holness, just one week before the election. Get ur facts right and stop…

The comment made by Barbara Saunders was very clear both in terms of its content and its subject: it was congratulatory of Portia Simpson Miller for the magnanimity of her concession speech. It was not, nor I suspect was it intended to be, an endorsement of Mrs. Simpson-Miller’s election campaign, tactics or anything else.

      • Barbara Saunders
        February 27, 2016

        Hi Crab Man

My comments are far from misleading. As you would recognise if you read my post again. My comments were limited to Mrs. Miller’s response and demeanour “in defeat” as a responsible leader. I guess she did what all politicians do during election campaigns to convince the electorate.

I thought electoral commissions were all responsible for the electoral lists so whatever is removed or added they are accountable. I’m not sure the point you are making about those names removed in marginal PNP seats because that would mean that the PNP would be at a disadvantage. Those that were added were in whose favour? Not knowing the facts about that I cannot say if the commission acted fairly in that regard.

Recounts are a regular feature of elections so it is her prerogative to ask for a recount. From the news I understood the matter of threatening to or suing Mr. Holness was about some claim he made that she was afraid to debate him. That is also her prerogative .

Looking at the two sides in the last campaign who was spewing hatred? Who came out and said that they offering “olive branch”. I sat and observed the two. I honestly thought the opposition was the gov’t and the gov’t the opposition. Sir Barbara Saunders food for thought. Lets be the loving caring people that we once were. lets call a spade a spade. Lets look out for others genuinely. Lets be a model honest people. We cannot progress while holding the opposition down nor vice versa. The only way forward is to forget about party colors. Do the right things or else this thing is going to explode one day. Dominica is for everyone not for one set of people. If this trend continues the other party who wins the election after the labor era will do the same. And Dominica will suffer

just so the people of Dominica that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is not affiliated with the Dominica Labour Party (DLP).

The DLP is affiliated with the defeated People’s National Party (PNP). They are the RED Party like SKERRITS RED CABAL.

I know those spin doctors will be quick to say is another labor win, but JLP is not the same as DLP. First JLP is green and Dlp is Red. Secondly, the dlp of Skerrit is not the same as the dlp of LeBlanc. This Skerrit dlp is like a woman that divorced her good husband but keeps his last name because of the benefits the name carries.

@ newtral, In the English language bankruptcy implies that the person that became bankrupt once had something but some how ruined it. However, in the case of Skerrit and his version of dlp, hE NEVER HAD ANYTHING! He made it through lies, deceptions, trickery, and fake. Sadly, though lies might win sometimes, it will catchup with you someday, and that’s what has happened to us because we have been believing lies for 15 years

    February 26, 2016

This win there again confirms why Dominicans are the most foolish people in the Caribbean. As we look at the reasons for this change in Jamaica, one will agree that the situation in DA is three times worse, and yet we keep voting Skerrit after 16 years of failure. Apart from a few government ministers, excluding Ian no one else in the country is better off than they were 15 yrs ago. In fact they are far worse off, except Mano, the Lawrence brothers, Tony them. Yet we labor me foot.

    • Barbara Saunders

      Lead singer

You are totally misunderstanding the dynamics here. Perhaps the difference between Dominca and Jamaica in terms of the move for change was Mr. Andrew Holness. Food for thought?

      • Crab Man
        February 26, 2016

@ Babara Saunders, You are again trying to spin and mislead people. All the issues pointed by @Lead singer are very correct. While I congratulate both Holness for winning, the real cause of this victory is the election commission that did all they could to ensure a fair election according to the constitution. First, Jamaicans that have been leaving abroad for over 10 years were NOT allowed to vote as seen in Dominica. and then this: There are 1,824,410 people on the voters’ list, which was released last November. The Electoral Office of Jamaica said 34,907 people were added to the list, while 3,536 names were removed.

I could tell, dased on your comments that you are trying to attack Mr. Linton, who is fighting for our democracy and fair election, but you need to come with truth. Don’t come here with your lies and spin

      • Barbara Saunders
        February 27, 2016

        Hi Crab Man

There you go again. I have neither lied nor misled anyone. You can see my comments above about the electoral commission. Since I do not know what process was used to add or delete names I cannot comment on fairness or lack of in the Jamaica elections. I am also not sure what the election laws in Jamaica provide for. In Dominica there is a legal procedure for removing names when once registered.

In the other post Lead singer’s reference to overseas voters was in the context of Dominica and my response to her/him was also in the context of Dominica’s opposition.

Since you have concluded that I am trying to attack Mr. Linton who you say is fighting for our democracy, he more than anyone else should know that under the democratic system that he is fighting for I am free to attack him as he has attacked people of every clime and creed in Dominica and elsewhere for the last fifteen years or so. Therefore, there is no spin or lies anywhere in what I have written…

    • Just like that!!
      February 26, 2016

Change your leader….. he is a major problem for the UWP.

      • Barbara Saunders
        February 27, 2016

        Crab Man

I thought I replied to this second post but it seems to have disappeared. I have misled no one and lied about no one.

As indicated in my previous post response I do not know what process was used to delete or add names so I cannot comment on the fairness or otherwise of Jamaica’s elections. I also do not know what their laws provide. In Dominica there is a legal procedure for removal and addition of names.

The person to whom I responded in the other post was referring to overseas voters in the Dominica context and it was in that context I responded.

I see you have concluded that I am trying to attack Mr. Linton who you say is fighting for our democracy. In that case, he more than anyone else should know that our democratic system allows me to criticise or attack him just as he has been attacking people of every creed and clime inside and outside Dominica for the last fifteen years.

  16. February 26, 2016

Change Is A Must in every other country. Only in Dominica people think Change Is Not A Must. But I say” CHANGE IS A MUST RIGHT NOW”.

    • PV
      February 27, 2016

Oh the political pundits on DNO. You guys know so much. We ourselves believe that there is nothing more sacred than the PEOPLES’ RIGHT TO CHOOSE! And so, if it means electing (CHOOSING) the same group of people (PARTY) to run the affairs of state four consecutive times, to rule for twenty years, I salute the people and honor their choice. How about that for democracy in Dominica! And yes, since mankind’s heart and therefore his/her motives and actions are intent on preserving self interest, it stands to reason that persons with less than stellar credentials will be elected. The preceding applies in all cases where people vote their choice of government. I dare say furthermore, no so-called democracy on earth can better the corrupt Government of the United States.
